- We present a new EarthQuaker Session featuring Wata and Takeshi of Boris, highlighting the Sunn O))) Life Pedal V3, performing “Vomitself” from their 1998 album Amplifier Worship.
This heavy performance supports a special Record Store Day release of Boris and Sunn O)))’s 2006 joint album, Altar. Out of print for over 15 years, Altar will finally return on double LP. In addition to major players Sunn O))) and Boris, Altar boasts an extensive roster of guest musicians/collaborators such as Kim Thayil (Soundgarden), Joe Preston (Earth, Thrones, Melvins, High on Fire), Phil Wandscher and Jesse Sykes (Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter) as well as long time Sunn O))) collaborators TOS Niewenhuizen and Rex Ritter.
Greg Anderson of Sunn O))) says, “We had a lot of fun making Altar- we transcended all barriers and boundaries to create our own sonic language that still strongly resonates. It was incredibly adventurous for us at that point in time. We played in the moment without a preconceived direction, then arrived at a beautifully heavy place together. Altar is a monumental documentation of some early experiments with collaboration. We learned a lot from working with Boris and engineer/producer Randall Dunn as well as Bill Herzog, Jesse Sykes and Joe Preston. We carried those ideas and spirit into recordings that followed Altar.”

My neighbor can't stop listening to this song! Because he has no choice.
I love how they're doing the Sunn O))) arm-raise/slow windmill move. I think once you plug into this pedal, it's a requirement. They just need the smoke machine.
i think its so they can coordinate their strums together, since there is no drums for guidance
A lot of drone bands do that for timing with each other since there is usually no drums.
@@sonictemple2925 Yeah, I think you're right, unless they have in-ear monitors with a click track. But I'm guessing Sunn O))) do NOT use a click track.
Daaaaaamn. That's a spicy meatball.
🍝
We need a Beato-style “what makes this song great” breakdown of this song. My ear training just isn’t helping me much…
😂😂
So good, and 100% in control, on purpose, disciplined. The tone in the section from 3:40 to 4:00 or so is amazing. And speaking of amazing: Earthquaker folks, I hope you know how freakin' cool you all are. Seriously, your talent, generosity, and support of the community is extraordinary, and very much appreciated.
This is killer. I love my Sunn 0))) pedal and Hizumitas pedal Just got tickets to Melvins and Boris I can’t wait.
I like the part that went "rrrhhhhaaahahahhrrr"
Sounds huge. I’d love to hear Boris record with someone like Steve Albini or someone like him. They’d sound so massive.
Supermassive
I’ve been hoping for years now they would link up with Albini. One can hope.
I love how the picking sounds like kicking a storm door.
From the amazing (and appropriately titled) “Amplifier Worship”
Beautiful.
Very!
This east Los Angeles lifelong guitarist grew up listening to Fred Frith.
Outstanding!
Thank you kindly!
This music triggers emotions that are normally absent
just glorious
🙏
Imagine being in that room
I Love You, Boris! You scare the Hate out of me and I Love You for that!!! 🎶🎶🌈🌅🔊💛🧡💙🎶🎶💐🌻🌚🌝🌞🦋
Nice cameo DBA ))))))
Stunning stuff! Thanks for this gift!
Our pleasure!
Wata and Takeshi are a force of nature and the pedal is the storm. Of course the stacks of amps helps ..
I have this pedal, it's amazing and so are these bands.
🤘
Boris is so fucking cool, I hope I can catch them live here in brazil someday
HEAVY.
Amazing ripping the ground up out of Hell tone!!
awesome!!!
🤘
the design is very worship
Seeing Boris in London in three or so weeks. I can't wait.
Jealous!
Dude, at 4:20 where it went rwuahrrrrrrr bwowwowawarughhhhhhhhhh. So sick
got my RSD Sunn/Boris "altar" copy yesterday = stoked
🙇♂️🙌
🖤
This is where they do the octave D# tuning, right? Thought they maybe used thicker bottom strings for those songs.
amazing
Thanks for watching!
Love Boris! 尊敬
🙌
LOUOOOOUUUUUD
This is transformative brutality. Bless.

❤
I wish they would tour together
K-R-R-R-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-N-N-N-N-G!!!!
да, то что надо
Lekker hoor ⚡️👌
How do they make that crackling almost geiger counter type of sound? Is it just multiple distortions or fuzzes destroying the signal or the amps being punished too much?
Maximum Volume Yields Maximum Results.
Pretty sure it's distortion/clipping from the preamp or audio interface this was recorded with. Only hearing it on the right hand channel and it sounds bad, doesn't seem like a deliberate guitar tone to me.
Edit: I mean that specific thing sounds bad, the rest sounds cool
What guitar tuning is Boris using? I have the Hizumitas and Life Metal pedals for some DRONE!
a lo)))w one
I believe they use A# standard and sometimes drop tune to drop G
i THINK vomitself is in drop D# from A# standard
i believe for this song they tune to a# standard and then drop the 6th string down to d# to match the 5th string
Bb Standard for most things, sometimes G# depending on the song or if they played something in Bb that was slowed down in studio like Huge. For Vomitself they tune the Bb string down to a super low Eb for a EbEb unison in the low strings.
Wait but no fog machine???
