David is the best guitarist in the genres he plays as far as I'm concerned and I've been listening to contemporary music since I was 5, I'm about to turn 73.
I myself use to not use a pick but over the course of the last two years or so have gotten really good with one and actually lost skill without it. I think there are pros and cons to both.
What a soulful sound. When a great talent ,skill and love of music come together , one can sound almost like this. David has something extra and I can't figure out what but it's there .
Its more versatile, and imo gives better tone/dynamics. I've tried a while to do both while hiding pick in hand but can't get it down, example of the technique: Andre Nieri - Sweet Child O' Mine

Those are some of the best, most original runs I've seen put together in a while. I'm tempted to go note for note trying to learn what you were doing.
