Yesterday I tried your tip from one of your last videos: when I got home I walked past my dogs w/o talking to them and pretended to do a task. For the first time in memory, my 2 Airedales calmed down right away and didn’t jump up to greet me and go bonkers wrestling each other to ‘impress’ me. Wonderful! I also used hand signals primarily instead of vocal, too, and was reminded they respond so much more quickly to that. Thanks for your thoughts and tips.

    Hey from Ohio!
I came across your videos a few weeks ago and have been watching faithfully to reap as much info as I can. Thank you so much for your honest and raw content. It has been a huge eye opener, even down to speaking with my dog during training. I have never had so much passion in training and working with my dog! Keep it’s up it’s amazing!

Love your channel! You have helped me so much with my 2 yr old gsd/black lab. I got her at 9 months(off craigslist) and she has a ton of trust/confidence issues from not being socialized as a puppy (and leaving her mom at 4 weeks). We still have a lot of work to get her comfortable in new situations, but she gets better every day!

Your videos have truly helped better my relationship with my 18 month old boxer, I have never had trouble with a dog running away on me before... but Pepper is a bit of an independnet free spirit.. and by watching your videos and working on my relationship as her leader - both of our lives are 100% better and she is completely dependable now. SO THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!

I used to use a 6' leather double prong collar leash on my 15 month GSD. It was a bit heavy and cumbersome. When I had a session with you in January for dog reactivity, you used the 4' latigo. With that leash and training, my obedience and training has improved by leaps and bounds. We can go anywhere now, and there is no dog reactivity. Thanks Tom for all you have done for me and Greta. Always watch your videos!!

I'm working on becoming a canine behaviorist and I've learned so much from your videos so far. I've been able to help my girlfriend with her 1 year old boxer, my parents with their anxious Aussie, and I've recently adopted a beautiful Shep/husky mix who has the perfect baseline dominant female temperament. Thanks for the great content and spreading the word about balanced training methods.

Love, love, love your videos! Been hiking with 10 month GSD and having her drag a long line that often gets tangled. Never thought to use retractable leash - brilliant! .... Tala is reactive (we are working through it with your helpful videos), and while working in the yard today, 2 different dogs walked by, a skipping toddler and a tween riding bike, but by using your "deflate the balloon" method - NO REACTION!!! Still a work in progress, but getting there - thanks!

I love love your training methods!!! I just got a White German Shepherd puppy and your video s have been a great resource. I did settle on a 6 foot leather leash with a choker chain for leash lessons. Kiki is nearly 4 months and pulling powerfully until I got the choker chain,. One lesson and no more pulling thanks to you and your Utube video s. I use two hands with my six foot leash , my left hand holds the leash short and the right hand holds the difference. I had abandoned the retractable leash but now I see a practical purposes for it. Thanks so much 😊

Thank you for taking the time to address my question. Never thought of carrying a leash around my shoulder with a ring like that, but can see how it would be awesome in some situations e.g. hands-free and out-of-the-way to carry during off-leash hikes, but you'd still have it at the ready when needed. You could even clip other things you want to keep handy onto the ring with a biner :)
BTW, digging the live videos. Will definitely keep an eye out for them in the future, or if you do them on a schedule!!

Yet another timely and helpful video :) . Since my pup is older now, the leash we've been using is torn to shreds. I reached out to a big dog leash company I did product photos for asking advice on what the best type of leash would be to use... But still haven't heard back. So thank you for this!! I was also told retractable leashes were dangerous and tossed the one I had. Now I wish I hadn't because it would be really useful for play and recall, I see. Also dat' puppers in your video seems like such a sweetheart! I hope she finds a permanent home soon after you posted this video :)

Loved this video. So helpful. I've used 6 foot leather leashes that have outlasted the dogs. The 4 foot leash, I have never owned. I can see how this would be a game changer for my 15 month old GSD and me, especially since she sometimes gets ahead of me and barks. So excited to try a 4 foot leash with her! Thanks for the excellent and practical real life tips!

    Hello from California,
Thanks for the video! I use a 6ft nylon with my minpin mix, which I realize now is not the best choice. I’m trying desperately to find the right tools to help us through his behavior modification. I can’t quite pinpoint what it is that he’s doing, but I suspect he’s resource guarding me from “threatening” dogs. I’m trying to maintain proper control over the situation and I see that the leash and collar are very important tools in this process!
Thank you for all your hard work and dedicated communication to those of us trying our best to create better lives for our dogs. You rock!

Hi Tom! I use a 5ft [rope] leash from Wilderdog with a carabiner clip. I love it - the main reason I got it was because it's reflective and waterproof, but the added bonus is the carabiner that I can lock in case my dog goes bananas. I used to have a leather leash, but it wore out from getting wet and the brown dye came off on my hands after awhile. I do notice the rope does slip through my fingers sometimes and I couldn't help but LOL when you demonstrated what 'some' people do - they wrap the leash around their hand a million times - I do that even with a 5ft leash haha. Honestly, I don't know what the best one is. And the retractable only comes out on hikes.. MAYBE. :) Anyway, thanks for all of the work you do! You've helped my household a ton!

Always learn a lot from your channel. Definitely enjoy when you go live. Would be interested to see what you do in your daycare. This video was very helpful. I was just trying to figure out which leash to use. I have been using a nylon leash. Definitely not a good choice when walking a anxiety aggressive German Shepherd towards other dogs. I knew it should be leather but wasn't sure of what the length or width should be. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with all of us.

    We love your videos!
We’ve contacted about the out of state package as we have a case similar to Finns’, the two year old Rottweiler in the video “Fearful Dog Aggression Training and habilitation” and look forward to helping our boy with your guidance!
