My mother so loved her comedy, then I found her, but had no idea she could sing. She's amazing. Powerful, emotive, a joy as I listen to her on a lonely night in Los Angeles at nearly 4am. Thanks Patricia. Love you much.
Last night Patricia appeared at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford, in conversation with Edward Seckerson. We were treated to a feast of her singing from her very early years in musical theatre and the audience was spellbound. The majority had no idea she had such a talent. If only she was still singing - but she did reveal that she sings in her local Cathedral choir, although she tries not to sing too loud! What a wonderful, talented, charming lady she is.
She has had spectacularly good vocal training. How can you tell? Every consonant and every vowel perfectly placed and enunciated. Great breath control too. Amazing. I never knew she could sing like this.
What a talent! Thank you so much Patricia! I know you are now 87 years old, but it would be great if you could give us another album! Doris Day just did it at 90!
This great woman has the voice to go with her greatness. Yes, I found that she indeed was recognized by Queen Elizabeth.....and I'm happy about it. I find this voice inimitable...very, very different , but glorious and beautiful. I do love Patricia Rutledge singing and acting so very foolish on KEEPING UP APPEARANCES! BRAVA!!!
I can not believe this!!! I am a fan of keeping up apperances and one of my favorite episodes is when she invites poor Emmett over for a candle light supper and she sings so badly she scares off Rose's boyfriends and Emmett and Richard are holding their ears LOL! This episode is so funny I laugh everytime I see it never could imagine this amazing actress could have an incredible voice!! Wow I am truly knocked out!! Bravo Patricia or should I say "Mrs. Bucket!!! LOL!!!
Did nobody else hear and see this extraordinary performer as Little Mary Sunshine in 1962 at (I think at a theatre at Golders Green), with Bernard Cribbins et al? One of the highlights of my experiences of London theatre, musical comedy at that time. And search back to an episode where Hyacinth sings The Old Rugged Cross
A an ardent fan of Patricia Routledge, I am not surprised that she had a wonderful, rich voice. It could be heard when she had one of her outbursts as Hyacinth Bucket ( Bouquet!) for the rich tones could not be hidden from us, in spite of the humour. You are sadly missed Patricia.
Oh my god. Mrs Bucket you can sing. You have an amazing voice and I have just heard you for the first time. I will listen alot more if I can find any discs of you. AMAZING! XXX
I knew from the first time I heard Hyacinth Bouquet sing that she had to have an incredible voice. You can’t hide that kind of quality by pretending she can’t sing.
I worked with Patricia in Panto in Canterbury 40-odd years ago ! Of course her singing voice (and figure!) was wonderful in those days......... a true artist.
Oh My Goodness. This really stunned me, and I can tell you I'm a picky little b*** when it comes to singing... I usually don't even much like mezzo/alto voices, but this was a true treat to listen... to my favourites this goes in a flash.
Beautiful....what a surprise..i had no idea she could actually sing beautifully! Thank you so much for sharing...please may we hear the rest of the record?
I always suspected that she had a very nice voice, based on how she did her Florence Foster Jenkins noises on KUA. Although sounding ghastly on the show, there was good vocal & breath support, and good resonance. How wonderful to hear her singing for real!!
k8nairne....I love this woman's voice so much! Thanks! would you happen to have the entire album? If so, would you, could you upload some of the others? and...do you know if the album is still available? Oh I'd surely love to have more of this wonderful voice!
This is absolutely stunning, so thank you for posting. If you have the rest of the album, please upload the other songs as I can't find it available anywhere! :)
As with Les Dawson and his off-key piano recitals Patricia,as Hyancinth, uses her vocal skills to 'kill' her singing.Dawson was actually a proficient pianist and as we can hear in this upload Patricia has an amazing voice.Wonderful to hear it.
Any chance of allowing us to hear some of the other pieces in this great album? YES...to k8nairne...could we hear more of this album? I'd love it...and I athink a few others would too! What a woman!!!!!
This woman has a great voice, and the first time I heard it quite a while ago, I had a hard time placing this voice with Mrs. Hyacinth "BooKay" Bucket!!! Ha! I am going to try to find this album somewhere! Thanks so much to k8naime and YT!!!
She certainly has a beautiful voice, fabulous actress and wonderful in Musical Comedy. I would have loved to hear her in more Operetta - Jill All Alone in Edward German's Merrie England for example or Mad Margaret in G and S's Ruddigore. Opera is another matter- there are not that many roles for altos in opera apart from the baroque repertoire. If she had concentrated solely on Opera her career would not have been so great and diverse. A wonderful artist!
Does anyone know if this album is available for purchase in any form any where? I've come up with a null internet search and I'd love to hear the rest of the album. Please help!
It's been my experience that it's not surprising that Patricia Routledge is such a wonderful singer. It's only a wonderful singer like Patricia Routledge that knows how to screw it up and sing as badly as Hyacinth Bucket. Jean Stapleton (Edith Bunker from All In The Family) was another example. On "All in the Family" she sang like a hinge, but she was actually quite a good singer in real life.
This is wonderful. In an interview, Patricia mentions that her true singing ability is the only way she could successfully sing so off-key as Hyacinth.
Hi Peter, Patricia Routledge sang the Mezzo Soprano role of the old lady in Candide very well. Unfortunately she couldn't sing Glitter and be gay as that is for a coloratura soprano and would have been much too high for her / not for her voice type. For that song you need June Anderson, Nathalie Dessay or the originator of the role of Cunegonde Barbara Cook. All the best.
WOW the way she floats that high E at the end...sublime!

She is a classically trained singer and an amazing person.
I knew she could sing, didn't know she had such an amazing voice. Sheridan would be proud of his mummy.

Remarkable
Shows how hard it was to sing off key in keeping up appearances
I'd like to be sush a singer ...She is incredible!
I didn't know that any of the songs from "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" were translated into English.
She certainly has a beautiful voice, fabulous actress and wonderful in Musical Comedy. @Quatorzel4 Oh, that would make his Mummy so proud!
..nothing to do with Hyacinth! This performance is incredible and beautiful!
She has of course appeared in many Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals in the West End and Broadway over the years
A Tony Award and an Olivier Award for Musicals.
I've been looking for this album to no avail! Does anyone know if it's still possilbe to order?
Beautiful!
How did you find these lost songs?

Told you she was a dame.....
She was in several Broadway musicals. I don't believe any of them were a hit, but she always got raves.
@Quatorzel4 I hope Sheridan doesn't catch it!
@littlecatchild This doesn't surprise me. Singing as consistently awful as Hyacinth takes tremendous skill.
