Is there a way to get a copy of your receipt digitally? Here in the US many stores are doing electronic receipts now and you can just use the website/app if you want to see your receipt. Of course you have to be signed up with the store to get the receipt that way.

Next time you might want to bake the bacon 🥓🥓 in the oven at 400° F for 8-15 minutes depending on how crispy you want it. Keep an eye 👁️ on it so you don't burn it. The fatty part should be a golden brown and crispy. 😉

I think that homemade bread is a really good chance to explore the differences between the cheaper and pricier ingredients. Something with so few ingredients(literally just flour, water, salt, yeast) means that the differences have nowhere to hide. You could also use it as an opportunity to also try out the different butters, and see what the different butters do to both the cheaper and steeper bread, and see if perhaps cheap flour is fine, but expensive butter really makes a difference.

I’ve had a really dreadful day, but seeing that you uploaded and watching you and Mrs B made me feel so much better. Thanks for all the fun content, you always raise my spirits. Lotsa love from Cape Town to you and your three lovely ladies xxx
Edit: just a lil thing my mom taught me about sandwiches: if you’ve got bread with holes and you’re worried about leakage (who isn’t? I can’t stand wasting a single drop of mayo) wash and dry your lettuce and put it on both pieces of buttered bread/toast before any other ingredients. The lettuce keeps all the other ingredients inside and stops them from making the bread soggy. That’s how my mom made the best lunch sandwiches for me when I was in primary school. Thanks Mom!

So I'm not sure what type of bacon you guys have over there but in the states our bacon is somewhat thin, cured and smoked. For a BLT it's ideal to get it crisp, use some basic Romaine because its a bit more crisp And make sure you always salt and pepper your tomatoes. Oh and you're legally obligated to cut it diagonally

  • @humanbean67

not sure the BLT was invented in the US, but pretty sure that it got the name BLT in a US diner. many diner phrases were lost to the mists of time, but this is one that stuck around.

Never made mine that way, have always toasted the bread, put butter then mayo on, then add the lettuce first (to soak the wetness of the tomatoes), the tomatoes, then the bacon, add salt and pepper and then other piece of buttered bread.

True BLT is on white bread with Mayo, fresh garden tomatoes and lettuce with crispy bacon! That is the only way it should ever be made or served. That is from an American and a cook! Bread is done in a toaster not a pan! We would use iceberg or romaine lettuce on it! The cheap one is the best always!

These episodes always end up making me wonder how the hell it is that groceries are so much cheaper in the UK than over here in the US. Your expensive gourmet ingredients are still cheaper than the crappy stuff at the cheap grocery stores here!

Honestly, I think the sandwich should be called a TBL, because the tomato should really be the star of the sandwich. It's hard to go wrong with bacon, but a generic supermarket tomato that's been refrigerated (which destroys some of the flavor compounds) will ruin the sandwich, while an amazing garden tomato really makes the whole sandwich. And while I would never make a salad out of iceberg lettuce, it's definitely the better choice for a BLT so it doesn't compete with the tomato. Same goes for the mayo, a good quality mayo is nice, but not a flavored mayo, for the same reason. The tomato is the star.

7:09 I never have my nose close enough to the phone when he asks us to smell something and as we all know, it only works the first time.
By the way, you can get away with cheap bacon if it's smoked (as mentioned) but also if you cook it until ALL of it is crisp. The cheap stuff is very fatty and I personally have texture issues if the fatty parts aren't crisp.
Optional: For a little extra tangy kick, you can swap out the mayo for cheap store brand Miracle Whip (usually called salad dressing in the store brands).
Now take that money you saved by buying cheap bacon and upgrade your bread a bit, then you'll have a darn fine BLT for a moderately cheap price 😉

It's the superior method for slicing tomatoes, as the central section holds the surrounding seeds and flesh together.
The comparison between the amount of solid flesh and wet seed covering on the slices would have been more obvious if they had been sliced the correct way.

I believe that the order in which the ingredients are placed in the bread makes all the difference. Personally I go slices of tomato, a good sprinkle of salt to draw the moisture away from the bottom layer of bread, a good grind of black pepper, then the lettuce to cover the tomato slices, and some more fresh ground black pepper, next drizzle a little of the juices from the frying pan and then add the bacon, finally topping the sandwich with the slice of bread . Notice that I don’t toast my bread at all and there is a complete lack of mayonnaise or any other sauces. If I have a choice of bread I prefer to have my sandwiches in what locally is known as a t-cake( West Yorkshire) but it has various names throughout the country from a bap to a roll, an oven bottom cake or muffin.

No need to buy a fancy Mayo.
When I make BLTs, I just use Helmanns mayo, but I add some Dijon Mustard and a little bit of honey to offset the mustard (A good honey mustard is also acceptable if you don't want to faff about with honey and mustard.)
