DIY TurtleDog Hammock Stand

- This is my take on the popular TurtleDog portable hammock stand.
I needed a smaller version that would fit in my car easily. I still wanted it to sit high enough to use it as a chair.

Well done! I found this easy to follow. Thanks for sharing!
I laughed out loud at 'tressure preated', cause I do that shit all the time. Great video thank you for posting.
I'm a scout leader who began hammock camping last year. Once I got off the ground I don't want to go back. However, sometime we end up camping in a field were there are no trees. I made two of these this afternoon in about an hour and half. They were easy to make and work well! Thanks for posting!
+will tidwell
Glad it helped. Scouting is a blast.
+will tidwell Also planning to make these for my son and I for treeless scout trips. Glad they're working out for you. Any issue with the shorter legs?
I built mine (two sets) over a year ago and they have held up to a ton of uses. I'll actually be using them in a few weeks. You could experiment with shorter legs, but remember that you get some sagging once your in the hammock.
will tidwell You used 4' legs, correct? I was saying "shorter' in reference to the original 6' legs of the TD stand.
Any idea on weight capacity ?
That's a nice compact creation. I'm gonna try this for camping!
Thanks for the video, a buddy and I have made this, works great...only thing I did different was to put rubber caps on the legs for any possible indoor hammocking that could happen. Also, i got some velcro straps to keep it all together when stored.
+Sam Ollis
Velcro straps are a great idea. I'l have to do that.
I made one of these recently, following this video, and it is perfect! Thanks!
I cut the pole so that it is closer to 5 ft per section, I'm using an ENO double nest, the pins are put in to be spaced 10ft apart.
QwirkMaguirk how much did it run you? I'm on a budget so I'm trying to price everything out
Shy KK about $20, I know less than 30. I had all required tools.
Awesome! Thanks
Well I found out what I'm gonna be building next love the design very simple yet not super expensive to build either
really good
Thanks for this..... eno pretty much set the (outrageous) bar for their hammock stands @ 250.00 a piece. Building your own seems the only sensible way to go
Very nice job, how did you attach the ridgepole to the top of the tripod?
That is awsome I will make this for my son!
+Lisa Adams
Awesome, let me know how it goes.
good info. Thanks!
Nice work. I'm looking on to build a stand dor my hammock
+Christian Rodriguez
Let me know how it turned out. Glad it was helpful.
I'm building this right now...all the stuff is in the shop and I'm either starting it in the next 10 minutes or starting it tomorrow. Thanks for the cool build. I'm using a warbonnet blackbird hammock, so it'll be interesting to see if the 10 foot ridge pole will work or if I'll need to add another 5 feet.
Awesome! Hope this helps. Be sure to post some pics or even better, a video of the finished product!
Video?
I have a Blackbird, too. Please let me know the sizes of legs/crossbar that ends up working for you.
is 4 feet to low I was thinking six feet would be good to make up with the extra hang
awesome
On your ridge pole, did you cut it in half then use the taper end to piece it back together to make it portable? I have seen other vids where the joined ends break and they welded it back together. Thanks for the vid.
Nice build. I've been thinking of building something like this for my yard. How level does the area have to be to set it up.
This is a bit shorter than some I've seen used, however, it seems better for compact carry in a vehicle as well. What was your total cost for parts used?
Thanks for the awesome vid. I have a new project for the weekend. :)
Have you needed to add a cord to the bottom of the tripods to keep them from opening up too far?
xThehumanoidx Not really. I pretty much always use them where the feet are pretty well secure from sliding. That would be easy to add though if you were using the stand on slippery surfaces. I've slept in it several times now without any issues. Let me know how yours turns out.
👍💕
I just attempted my first TurtleDog stand, and I found this video. I like these dimensions as it would fit in my car easily for weekend trips. Do you have any issues with the legs wanting to collapse inward? My current stand keeps wanting to fall down every time I get out of it, and sometimes when I get into it.
+Edward Smith
I really haven't had any issues but I'm really careful getting in and out. It has collapsed on my daughter though... she was rocking in it.
I've thought a couple of times about adding some string to the bottom of the legs to keep them from scooting. Haven't had to yet though.
Getting this in the car is the whole reason I made it.
this is awesome definitely makn one!
,how far in did u put the hitch pins?
+thelynyrdwinder
It would depend on the size of your hammock. I had the pins at just the right width apart so the ridge line would be tight.
Just wondering and will be trying in the next few days, what would happen if you were to take on the hinge side (piece attached to one 2x2) use eye bolt for top bolt and curve the top with a router. Then attach 2 more hinges on the other two ~2 ft from bottom with a 2 ft 2x2 that has been 45ed where it would flip down into the dirt. Rotate so the eye bolts are away from each then attaching the hammock. Would the "stakes" with the force of the downward pull on the eye bolts keep from tipping it? (this is to eliminate the cross poll.
Following
how did you secure the pole to the top tripods? or are they just sitting on top?
The hammock suspension goes underneath where the tripod tops join and the pole goes over top. Can’t move.
I’d put some Amsteel in a triangle around the bottom of the tripods.
Thanks for the video. Have you used this set-up much outdoors and if so have you run into any "issues" using it, e.g. clearance under the hammock, setting a tarp over it, etc.? Also, is there any particular reason you used the hitch pins? Couldn't you just slip the loop in the suspension around the end of the pole and use a bolt through the pole to stop the loop from sliding in toward the middle?
+OldePete
I've used this outside overnight several times and it's been great. Throwing a tarp over it is pretty easy, just be careful of the pipe edges with the tarp. They could cut the tarp. The hitch pins were just an easy way to lock the lines at the end.
You could put some rubber tips on the ends of the fence rail. www.homedepot.com/p/Shepherd-1-1-2-in-Off-White-Rubber-Leg-Tips-2-per-Pack-89225/100123542
Does the top rail just sit on top or is there something that keeps it from sliding head to tail?
The 10 foot pole won't fit in your car. How about cutting the pole to 5 feet lengths to allow breakdown for fitting in the car.
Also the most comfortable hammock length is 11 ft. It seems you would need to have a longer pole length for that.
And I believe the longer more comfortable hammocks would need to be hung higher than possible with 4 ft tripod legs.
How much weight would this support? kids like to pile on together.
Do you need the bar on top? Could I just use the tripods? Could I replace it with a steel wire?
+Marilize Van der Walt
The steel bar is necessary to keep the tripods from falling together. The pole is really there to give you the distance you need from one side to the other for the hammock. The tripods are just holding up the pole.
Great instructional! Just built one! Any ideas on how to make it work on the beach? I feel like it will sink and make my butt hit the sand!
+yomamayomamaburrrrn
Hmmm... the only thing I can think of is some sort of canvas with three pockets for the legs to fit into. Kind of like a triangle under the legs that would sit on the sand. Sorry for the late reply.
Try putting a coffee can or a metal cookie sheet under each leg. The larger surface should help it not sink.
I showed my husband this video and he made me one.. But when i sit on it is all good, but once you trying to get out the whole thing galls on you and the legs spread apart!!
Any reason you went with T-nuts over regular nut with a longer bolt?
+Augie Bobik
Good question. I used the t-nut because I didn't want to mess with it after it was installed. The design could allow several different options.
Some hang the cross bar, this is the first I saw of it on top of the tripods. Reasons?
