The "Purdie Shuffle" on full display here. And the way the piano drops right after Fagen's epic line "Just another scurvy brother." Who else writes lyrics and music like this? Straight up genius.
I’ve always loved this song. Could be one of steely Dan’s most underrated songs IMO cause it just doesn’t get the love it deserves. Def one of my favorites.
Elliott randall on the guitar, If you ever meet him down in the UK he's such a nice dude, always smiling with such an infectious personality, it's interesting how the songs he plays on, from reeling in the years to this his personality shines through, would be hard not too!
I love to watch new Steely Dan fans blossom before my eyes. Fagen’s vocal phrasings are just so unique and enjoyable. The horn section is Chris Potter, Cornelius Bumpus and Bob Sheppard. Potter has an epic 4+ minute solo on West of Hollywood from their 2000 album Two Against Nature. It won 4 Grammy awards including Album of the Year, beating out Prince. A Fez is a hat of sorts but for Steely Dan it’s used in a different context. You’ll enjoy that song. 😉😉
Haha, the song went quick. Funny how that happens when listening to the Dan. Another great reaction and really like your deep takes on the mix etc. Really enjoying listening to your reactions to the Royal Scam. Also. don't think I have ever heard another songwriter using anything llike "walk along collecting turkish union dues" as part of their lyrics.
There's probably no more Steely Dan album than the Royal Scam. Katy Lied, Aja, and Gaucho are great and incredibly sophisticated and melodic., but there's no other album that captures their sarcastic, acerbic, sardonic attitude.
I don't even know how one would begin writing a song like this. Jazz, blues, rock, tropical vibes, it's got everything!

Chuck Rainey's bass is just ridiculous, especially during the piano solo.
The horn and guitar outro is my favorite part of this song. It’s so unexpected. Almost like it was part of another song.
