As a beginner climber I really enjoy watching other (relative) beginners climb alongside those with a bit more experience : would love to see more of this kind of thing 🤞🤞
Truly appreciate how Reebs focuses on quiet and precise foot placement, but also acknowledging her fear, 'cause I can relate and do struggle with that as well. Terrific video Hannah.
This was so refreshing to see. I feel like a lot of what is holding me back personally is fear and it’s not something we see a lot in climbers on UA-cam as they generally either have more experience in dealing with that fear or not having any at all. Commitment to a move can be so terrifying. Even if I do make a move on one climb I still may not have the confidence to do it again on the same climb or to do a move on a different climb. I love all of your videos as they’re incredibly motivating but I really appreciated seeing a less experienced climber than we normally see on UA-cam and the struggles she has that a lot of us can probably relate to!
I related a lot to Reebs' fears here! I often find I have to progress a move or two, climb down and then go up again, rather than completely power through the rest of a climb even if i get past a previous sticking point. I've made some good progress both accepting this aspect of myself and my climbing, and also moving past that fear at times too. Climbing for me is not just about sending things, but teaching my brain how to best manage fear and emotions (those ole mental health benefits!) The ending battle with "Barry" is very farmiliar, and it's always such a great feeling when you get past those points!
Love Reebs and this collaboration! Fear is my most limiting factor and it's really frustrating and difficult to break out of, so I really relate to this. Great video, thank you both
Good job Becky! I get scared so often too! I feel like I’ve gotten better at managing my fear than strictly overcoming it. I hope we both get better at that this year! Wonderful video, Hannah :)
That's an approach that's super useful! Keep it up and you will also get more confident about how you will manage your fear. And this in the long run will make you feel much more confident and brave as well!
Really does not matter about the grades, it's about stretching the boundaries and getting out of your comfort zone whether that is a physical or mental challenge. The joy of knowing you have pushed through a boundary is what is so rewarding and you can apply it to other aspects of your life. This was evident when Reebs sent the orange boulder !!
This video is so wonderful and very relatable. Please bring Becky back for some more videos in the future! And thank you Hannah for having a range of climbing skill levels represented on your channel!
Ok I love Reebs! She was so kind, and as a beginner I felt a kindship with her struggles. I appreciated her honestly at what she needs to improve on (esp when it comes to fear) because that's the first step to improving! Great video Hannah, hope to see Reebs on here again :)
Cool video, loved watching a newer climbing work thro the beginning phases of climbing. Reebs clearly has a decent grasp of how to apply basic technique around her strengths. All she really needs to do to progress a grade or two is to get comfortable falling. And I mean really like flopping, full back plant on the mat. Once your comfortable with taking any fall so many limits will just vanish. Work some fall practice and get a full send mindset going, youll be crushing in no time.
I loved this video Hannah- this really helped me with confidence on the wall as sometimes I get quite scared about the fear of falling off! Keep up with the great videos ! 😊
Ive been climbing for about 9 months now and I sometimes go with my mum every now and then when im in town. This video was like watching her climb the strength and technique to climb said climb is there but they both get about half way up the wall and stop on a move that's easier than one they may have done further down the wall. I think the externalising process will help a lot as a lot of people say 'im not x' like its a part of them that will never change but i think understanding that it something that you can change is helpfull
Yes! I’m also a former roller derby skater brought into climbing via a fellow derby friend too! I also definitely get scared, but it’s nice to have something to prove to myself that I CAN DO. Loved this video!
What a time for this to come up -- i'm also working on a project where i'm too afraid to make the last move, so it's heartening to watch you two work on fear and commitment. And maybe i'll have the nerve to try it tonight🤞
I've been stuck on a V3 for weeks, mainly because of a big scary move near the top, so I definitely relate to this video! Thanks Becky for being so honest and Hannah for the great video as always👍👍
Well done on that final boulder and for making progress on the others Becky! No matter how small, progress is progress! I can definitely relate to the fear, usually takes me quite a few attempts before I try to commit to moves which others make look quite easy!
Lovely video, I really enjoyed your natural chemistry climbing together - I'd love more videos like this! Reebs climbs very similar to how I do and it's so encouraging to see content from people just like me :-)
As soon as I saw the thumbnail I was like "Wait a second - I know this woman!" I've been following Rebecca on Instagram for some time already and always loved the positive vibes and dedication to overcome her limits. Seeing her in a video with Hannah brings me so much joy!
I was at the Climbing Hangar in Leeds at the weekend for the Women's Climbing Symposium and I was facing some similar issues. I also had a "Barry" hold that turned out to be quite friendly and supportive in the end! And during a blue route that I was really enjoying, my legs started to wobble... eventually I started doing some practice falls. It was nice seeing how Becky faced her fears.
looove this video! Big fan of Reebs - I got to the exact same sticking point with that first blue and wasn't able to move past it, so it was really encouraging to see you both having a go and coaching each other.
Loved watching this :) I’ve been climbing for about 3 months now, and I still find myself randomly going halfway through a project just to get nervous and climb back down I get nervous when a lot of climbers are around even though I know 99% of them “don’t care” and aren’t watching me, and I still get nervous about the height I love how encouraging you are Hannah! I’ll think of your voice in my head if I get scared saying “yeah” or “you got this” 🥰
Negotiating Barry was brilliant. Good for Rebecca, overcoming her fear. It's so frustrating when the crux is difficult or just scary and then the rest of the climb is so easy. Loving this video. Thanks, Hannah and Rebecca. Much respect.
Great video! I also struggle sometimes with being scared to do the move. What helps me some times is to sharply breathe out and then do the move. But it doesn't always work 😅! Keep on trying!! 🤟🏼😃
That's a great tip. I think breathwork is often overlooked for climbing performance and something I think I could definitely use better. Listening to myself breathing on videos is painful haha :)
Thank you for this video! Fear is such an important factor in climbing, especially when it turns you from monkey into a paralysed crab strangling the holds for fear of falling off. Reebs, your footwork is so beautiful and precise! It's wonderful to watch. I have been struggling with fear as well and what helped me was: climbing on a rope (makes the height somehow a bit less scary), trying out different betas (really forcing all kinds of possibilities) and Louis' dyno lesson (breaking down the move into smaller parts and working on these) ...and my climbing partner talking calmly at me when I'm too afraid to either move on or jump down. Looking forward to your next video, Hannah! :)
Thanks so much for your lovely comment. Had a chuckle at your paralysed crab analogy. Agreed, climbing on a rope has helped me with learning how to trust my body and breaking down boulders or moves into smaller moves or movements has really helped me too!
Thank you for supporting and helping beginner climbers and I'm so grateful for the support you've given me also! Looking forward to when we get to meet in person! I'm still not the "best" boulderer because of my fear (even on shorter climbs) if the holds are bad up high I get scared.
Ironically it takes a lot of guts and self awareness to admit that fear is holding you back. Props to this person for challenging themselves to do better.
Thanks SO much for this video! I'm struggling with the same type of grades in this vid, purely out of fear, so it's so nice to see content that isn't just higher levels :-) made me itchy to go out and try more !!
Lovely video! Wanted to say that when you feel too scared to try the move a great way to deal with it is to find a better, closer but similar hold to try the move! If that still doesn't work, small concrolled falls can help as well. So get the movement started but don't really commit to the hold. Just try touching the wall where you reach and try getting closer and closer. You will learn where your ability-comfort zone really is! In bouldering, knowing your physical limits is FUNDAMENTAL. It's one of the most dangerous disciplines and it's all about knowing when to commit and when not to squeeze in that split secon mid air. Remember that for you to squeeze, reaching the hold is not enough (unless you're going static) but yo uneed to reach it high enough to be able to engage your shoulder. Then, even a sideways dyno can be safe!
Also! Is very important to learn to do deadpointing when on easier climbs and not projects! You need to be in control and feel confident! Also, Reebs looks like she has a lot of positive energy and mindset, so I'm sure it won't take long for her to overcome her fears! Wish you all the best!
I hadn't heard the term "guppy" either, lol! This was so positive and encouraging! It brought me back to this time last year when I was very much in the same place as Becky. Recently did my first competition and it was a ton of fun - didn't place, but gained a lot of experience, a few battlescars, a few sends, and a lot of excitement for the next comp. It's really awesome to hear how Becky approaches analysing her limiting factors, naming her fears, etc - that's something I'm going to bring into my climbing, too! I've already named my problem hold: Steve.
Seeing Rebecca get past Barry on that orange one was so sick! I was cheering her on out loud from the couch. Would love to see her back and talk more about psychology!! That would be so interesting. You could already tell from the shorter section that she talked about it in this video that she was good at explaining things and applying them to the situation. Crossing my fingers for another video with Rebecca! 🤞🏻
As a newbie climber also dealing with a lot of fear around bouldering, this video was so great and so encouraging!! Keep up the amazing work, Rebecca and Hannah!!
Loved this video so much! I’m maybe an experienced beginner but the fears are so relatable! Having a mini psychology lesson was so great too and how it can apply to both climbing and mental health. ❤
so nice to see videos of beginners climbing. I am able to relate to her challenges and i must say her foot work is better than mine. I am inspired to work on it!!!
Currently super scared of the height after breaking my elbow. Nice to know I'm not the only scared climber out there right now. Loved the video, keep fighting the fear!
I had very similar issues before where i had commitment issues to holds and 2 excercices that really helped with that for me was fall training and touching holds So not daring to throw myself to a new hold was 2 issues, thinking i couldn't hold on once i landed it and fear of what would happen if i missed the hold or wasnt able to hold on. So i started with doing controlled jumps from successively higher holds on the climb to just aclimatize myself to a potential fall. Every session i would do a bit of fall practice from boulders i was working on. Climb one hold then jump off, climb one hold higher then jump off and actively try to push myself to climb higher and practice on landing good (tuck and roll) Then for the "touch holds" part i would just climb up to the hold i was going for using downclimb jugs and just touch it, try to hold on, try to get into the position i would land in and just tug on it to try to see how much "extra" power i could apply without falling off. Doing those two exercices on a regular basis has helped me loads. I managed to do a jump from the top of the wall from one jug to another just a couple weeks ago and my legs only shook a bit after :D slow and steady progress with deliberate work!
Really interesting to see Reebs' side of climbing. I've never had the fear aspect like her but definitely notice hesitation in going for bigger moves and not committing enough. Good to see her best one of her fears!
at the pink/black one, she shouldve used the high left foot + the high right hold with the right hand, and mantle with left hand, that way it would be way less flexibility needed
I really liked this video and Reebs!😊 A lot of her struggles felt super relatable and from what it looked like on camera her boulders are about my difficulty level too. I often have the exact same problem with my flexibility that Reebs had at 13:50. Could anyone recommend a good stretching/mobility exercise to get better at this kind of move?
Congrats to Rebecca for kicking Barrys ass! Good video, as a relative beginner, I sometimes struggle with fear of big dynos. (And a dash of social anxiety when the gym is full...)
There are definitely some useful lessons to learn here! I throw myself all over the place indoor bouldering (perhaps more than my shins would like) but when I tried lead climbing outdoors suddenly the fear kicked in and my style completely changed
It's great seeing someone who looks more like me climbing on UA-cam :) Climbing has become a way to have fun with movement for me but ive been very unfit for a long time and so all the slender, muscular people you see doing this online can be really intimidating!
Really glad you enjoyed the episode. What I love about climbing is that I believe everyone can have just as much fun and push themselves just as hard - it’s relative to your individual experience and context. ☺️
One thing that helped me with fear was practicing jumping off. Like if I was afraid to do that mantle one, I would push up and not even aim to grab the next hold, but practice feeling like it’s safe if I fall.
I have been climbing about 5 times and Rebecca is definitely better than I am. I haven’t gotten all of the special climbing techniques yet but these videos definitely help.
I think it's ok to have some fear and to not complete a boulder. Some just have awkward tops where you're in a strange position and a fall might hurt or even lead to injury.
I think something to really mention is it just takes practice and learning to trust everything. Leanring to trust your foot skill, the shoe rubber, etc. The way Reebs was climbing looked to be hand first and feet followed, where as climbing with more intention in the feet can get you more used to trusting your feet!
Note about hangar grades, pinks are basically ungradeable bc they’re more a style of climb than a difficulty. I’ve never managed a purple before but I’ve done a pink
Fear is definitely one of my biggest obstacles right now. I’m working a problem with a slab volume, and I don’t know how to fall off it properly. So, I’m afraid of making the move. Going to try it again tomorrow 😁
My favorite way to think about a new sport or people new to a sport I do is this: They are actually doing a harder thing than I would do on the same task. A less fit person does a harder job running 5 kilometers than a more fit one, and a less trained climber does a harder job topping V1 than a pro. If you ever want to judge people (or yourself) by their performance, you need to keep this in mind!
Practicing progressive fall/rolls backwards from the lowest level, repeating scary levels until comfortable... Important for fear, and also important for training the body to avoid severely sprained ankles and other horrors! That and top rope practice with a trusted coach. (Thanks Nichole!) My two cents, recovering from a severely sprained ankle, Daniel
On that mantle problem, seems like the angled wall allows solid smearing and then building feet? With the other points of contact, no need to fear putting weight into that side wall?
Hell yeah, BREAK UP WITH BARRY! Haha! Also, I really enjoyed Rebecca bringing in concepts from psychology to help understand different experiences in climbing. So many pro climbing coaches talk about mindset, so it's great to apply the science of the mind to our climbing!
It's the same with leading, practice falls until it's not scary anymore! Easier said than done, my partner has this problem and will downclimb everything - as a result, any move more than 1m off the ground is out. The way to do it must be climbing a little higher each time and jumping - but convincing someone to try it is hard.
I still get scared even after having climbed for 9 years! All part of the process but can be frustrating when you know it’s your head holding you back!!
Okay, I like the idea of the video, but you didn't provide her with any solutions to overcome her fears. I'm not saying, that I'd be able to do it, but I'm not the one naming the video "overcome fear", am I now? As an audience we can relate to her and her struggles, but it's a little bit frustrating, not seeing any progress, because you're no help to her. Usually I really enjoy your videos and your static and powerful climbs:)
I’d be the last to claim I was there to coach Rebecca up the wall. The video is just supposed to share another climbing journey - I’m an experienced climber but I’m not a coach. Rebecca is overcoming fear throughout the whole video by pushing her comfort zone & she sends her last project, which I reckon is progress!
As a beginner climber I really enjoy watching other (relative) beginners climb alongside those with a bit more experience : would love to see more of this kind of thing 🤞🤞
Absolutely! Always keen to have as many different climbers on the channel as possible - glad you liked it!
Truly appreciate how Reebs focuses on quiet and precise foot placement, but also acknowledging her fear, 'cause I can relate and do struggle with that as well. Terrific video Hannah.
Thanks Chris, really appreciate the support. Hope you enjoyed it :)

Totally agree! It can be really tough to break because there's a fine line between when it's rational and not. Glad you liked the video.
Good job Becky! I get scared so often too! I feel like I’ve gotten better at managing my fear than strictly overcoming it. I hope we both get better at that this year! Wonderful video, Hannah :)
Love that! I also feel like fear is something I want to really focus on this year. We've got it :)
That's an approach that's super useful! Keep it up and you will also get more confident about how you will manage your fear. And this in the long run will make you feel much more confident and brave as well!

CBT + climbing -- this was a fabulous video, Hannah! more Reebs, please!
Cool video, loved watching a newer climbing work thro the beginning phases of climbing. Reebs clearly has a decent grasp of how to apply basic technique around her strengths. Another fab video, Hannah! Reebs was so relatable, and her psychology insights were really interesting. Well done on getting past Barry!
Thanks Maria, glad you found the video interesting! It was great to climb with Reebs and learn a little more about applicable psychology!
I loved this video Hannah- this really helped me with confidence on the wall as sometimes I get quite scared about the fear of falling off! Keep up with the great videos ! 😊
You're so welcome! Fear of falling off is totally normal so it takes a while to build the confidence, but you've got this :)
Thank you 😊!
Ive been climbing for about 9 months now and I sometimes go with my mum every now and then when im in town. This video was like watching her climb the strength and technique to climb said climb is there but they both get about half way up the wall and stop on a move that's easier than one they may have done further down the wall. Yes! I’m also a former roller derby skater brought into climbing via a fellow derby friend too! I also definitely get scared, but it’s nice to have something to prove to myself that I CAN DO. Loved this video!
Fantastic description of parallel processes starting at 12:00. Hannah's facial expression while she listens is priceless though.

My absolute two fave 'social media' climbers! Finally got round to watching! Well done on overcoming fears both of you! You both smashed it x
looove this video! Big fan of Reebs - I got to the exact same sticking point with that first blue and wasn't able to move past it, so it was really encouraging to see you both having a go and coaching each other.

For the mantle, my suggestion is to push with the palm on the wall friction (not on the big hold) to make some space for the foot!
Negotiating Barry was brilliant. Good for Rebecca, overcoming her fear. It's so frustrating when the crux is difficult or just scary and then the rest of the climb is so easy. Loving this video. Thanks, Hannah and Rebecca. Much respect.

I love the idea of having a special circuit to teach certain moves. TCH seems like such a good gym
It is! Great for learning skills and having fun whilst doing so :)
Thank you for this video! Fear is such an important factor in climbing, especially when it turns you from monkey into a paralysed crab strangling the holds for fear of falling off.

Good to acknowledge fear as i definitely find that a limiting factor if I’m honest. Defo swerving big reaches for fear of missing and falling

Barry was No match for Reebs!! awesome video with actual relatable climbing struggles. More Reebs please!
As a newbie climber also dealing with a lot of fear around bouldering, this video was so great and so encouraging!! Keep up the amazing work, Rebecca and Hannah!!
can you explain it a bit more? fear of what exactly? i honestly didn't get what was she afraid of, cause she didn't really specify.
This is a great video, as a beginner myself I can really relate to Rebecca’s fears 🥰
Loved this video so much! I’m maybe an experienced beginner but the fears are so relatable! Having a mini psychology lesson was so great too and how it can apply to both climbing and mental health. ❤
I loveee this video because I struggle so much with fear in climbing. It is great to see strong women working through that. It inspires me so much ❤
You got this! Really glad to hear the video could provide some inspiration :)
Shoutout to Reeb's awesome Samus tattoo! I hope she's enjoying the new Prime remaster!
to anyone who reads this, have a great day (: hope u send your project
Thanks for love and encouragement. It is very much appreciated.
Right back at you friend!
so nice to see videos of beginners climbing. I am able to relate to her challenges and i must say her foot work is better than mine. I am inspired to work on it!!!
Glad you enjoyed the episode. It was great to have a climb with Reebs ☺️
Come on Becky.. you got this.. cheering for you. I love the progression. 👏
Currently super scared of the height after breaking my elbow. Nice to know I'm not the only scared climber out there right now. Loved the video, keep fighting the fear!

Loved this video such good footwork. Really relate to the fear factor
Thanks Fiona, glad you enjoyed the video and agreed on the great footwork!
at the pink/black one, she shouldve used the high left foot + the high right hold with the right hand, and mantle with left hand, that way it would be way less flexibility needed
I feel like a lot in climbing is overcoming fear(s). Definitely is for me at least ! 😅
Definitely! I find lots of times it’s my head holding me back! 🥲
Congrats to Rebecca for kicking Barrys ass!
Good video, as a relative beginner, I sometimes struggle with fear of big dynos. (And a dash of social anxiety when the gym is full...)
I need this!!! I'm so scared of going up a level because it starts to get kind of scary doing more dynos and holds I'm not confident with
Moving into unfamiliar territory is always a bit nerve wracking, but you’ll get more confident with those kinds of moves for sure!!💪
@@hannahmorrisbouldering thanks! And thanks for posting this video. I am afraid of falling big time so I related a lot
Would love to see more like this. Your climbing partner is very relatable
There are definitely some useful lessons to learn here! I throw myself all over the place indoor bouldering (perhaps more than my shins would like) but when I tried lead climbing outdoors suddenly the fear kicked in and my style completely changed
That samus aran tat 😍. Just got started climbing myself. It's good to see that everyone starts somewhere. Gives me hope for myself haha.
Class that Becky called the hold Barry, I was thinking just before she said it that the hold looks like a Barry :D
Her footwork is amazing I would have never thought she was a beginner
I have been climbing about 5 times and Rebecca is definitely better than I am. I haven’t gotten all of the special climbing techniques yet but these videos definitely help.
I think she's been climbing at least a year or two so don't sweat it! They'll come with time!
As someone who climbs mainly blue climbs at a ‘Hanger’ I really appreciated this video! Fear is my weakness also!
Glad you liked it :)
Fear is definitely one of my biggest obstacles right now. I’m working a problem with a slab volume, and I don’t know how to fall off it properly. So, I’m afraid of making the move. Going to try it again tomorrow 😁
Best of luck!
My favorite way to think about a new sport or people new to a sport I do is this:
They are actually doing a harder thing than I would do on the same task.
Congrats on the send!!!
So great to see the progress @reebs, nice to see the little moments of momentum and self analysis going on. See you soon
It's the same with leading, practice falls until it's not scary anymore! Easier said than done, my partner has this problem and will downclimb everything - as a result, any move more than 1m off the ground is out. The way to do it must be climbing a little higher each time and jumping - but convincing someone to try it is hard.
Cool casual climbing video!!! I think we can't totally remove the Fear in climbing and we learn instead how to manage it.
Having routes meant to teach a certain technique is so cool...!
Good job conquering Barry!
Really nice footwork Rebecca! 🔥
Agreed!
As a fellow doctorate student, I definitely agree that focusing on the small bits of progress is super important, especially for your mental health!
Ive been climbing a year now (pretty consistently once a week) and im still really scared of heights 😢😢
I still get scared even after having climbed for 9 years! All part of the process but can be frustrating when you know it’s your head holding you back!!
Mentally blocking with the same thing I do, which is “trust your feet”
Letting yourself fall on purpose will make you overcome the fear of falling. Exposure therapy :p
2:02 LMFAO
Reebs!!!!
Woot woot
maybe you should learn with her that she could fall off a boulder and still be ok. I think thats beneficial to break that fear border.
👍👍👍👍👍
I've been following reebs for a while on Instagram! Really enjoyed the collab
Glad you did! She’s great 😊
