  • Simple service steps for a complete tune up for a Toro 22" Recycler Personal Pace lawnmower that has not seen any maintenance for more than five years. The engine is a Briggs & Stratton 6.75 Quantum. The same procedures for similar mowers by Craftsman, Troy-Bilt, Cub Cadet, Husqvarna, Snapper, Lawn Boy.
    Stens 750-042 blade balancer - amzn.to/3QlSf8x
    Briggs SAE 10W30 oil - amzn.to/3qiia6h
    Briggs air cleaner no. 4911588S - amzn.to/47bIOyt

    Tri-Flow Superior Lubricant - amzn.to/3DG2A7x

    00:57 RPM adjustment
    02:03 Drain engine oil
    02:33 Remove and sharpen blade
    04:56 Balance blade
05:29 Replace and torque blade to 45 ft./lbs (61 nm)
    06:47 Refill engine oil
08:51 Remove and replace air cleaner
10:15 Check and clean spark plug
12:29 Lubricate wheels and control cables
    14:58 The money shot
The tools I like and use most often:
Magnetic spark plug socket set: amzn.to/3CzmpvO
    Tachometer: amzn.to/3sHibiH
Vessel Megadora JIS screwdriver set: amzn.to/363RFqO
    Channellock Bent Needle-nose pliers: amzn.to/3I5DbnA
    Long 1/4 Quick-connect Torx Driver Bits: amzn.to/3HUNgnm
    Spark Tester: amzn.to/3CxW2qi
    OTC Leak-down Test Kit: amzn.to/3CyUhJn
    Compression Tester: amzn.to/3IWd6sp
Wear your safety glasses, or you'll shoot your eye out. Try on some gloves. Take off that spark plug boot. Clean your room. Open the windows, those fumes are nasty. Just 'cause I do it, don't think it's the end all, be all solution. There's plenty more ideas out there, I can't take responsibility if you slice off a few fingers after watching my videos. And don't just pour that toxic stuff down the sewer or in the ditch, dispose of waste responsibly. Just be safe, OK?

Nice one, Stella! I just figured out that your name represents your Italian heritage. Playing a tarantella during the blade sharpening gave it away. 🎶
I like to get a thin, straight pic down inside the spark plug to confirm there’s no carbon chunks inside. For really bad ones I put them in the vice horizontally and get them red hot with a propane torch to burn them clean. For the rest I clean them up on the bench grinder wire wheel, finishing up with regapping as necessary. 🔧👍

I got a free toro recycler mower over 10 years ago and it was a very neglected mower. I did the basics and got it running and then I heard the dreaded knocking sound and I was like crap but lucky for me It was just some loose mounting bolts for the engine and it runs perfect. I changed the oil and air filter and the filter was soaked with either gas or oil or both so I changed that and the belt for the self propel and I've had for the last 10 or 12 years and I think it was a mid to late 90's or so mower and I'm still using it 10 years after I got for free. All I ever done to it is change the oil and replaced the blade and the spark plug and it starts on the first or second pull. I've also used always the 30 weight oil on any of my mowers or riding mower I had just for a few years and never had a problem and that's what briggs and stratton recommends.

Now that Honda has ceased production of lawnmowers, I would hope to see Toro license the Honda Drive system for the US market. I own a Honda and a Toro Super Recycler. The Honda Drive system is so intuitive. Release it during operation to pull back with ease. Release the Toro drive, and push forward a little to disengage the drive before pulling back. That’s crazy.

Cheers Tom! I can't really say yay or nay since I don't own one. From a repair perspective, they have a lot of fiddly bits and bobs of plastic that wear out prematurely IMO. As for performance, I've read complaints from others the physics of the drive mechanism is awkward. Difficult to regulate your speed as any effort to push the mower forward alters your force on the drive handle. In my limited use of test drives, I'd have to agree. I appreciate you watching.

The basic idea is to increase the tension on the governor return spring to increase the RPM. Hope this this helps.

No way it was close to 6,000 RPM. Perhaps 3,300. Blade did not need sharpening. Prime and paint areas where powder coating has peeled away. If you are in longer grass and not using a bag, or want to mulch, buy a diverter which holds the side discharge port open.
