Boy I really love that green, but all of them look very nice.. It was in mid 70's here in parts of Tennessee, but it's supposed to drop below freezing and by Wednesday it's going to be almost 80.. crazy weather.. Jesus came out great, but then He always does...lol..S.C. Another great video, thx for bringing us along..
Excellent repair on the crucifix! The green label Wood Tite glue is water proof. I use it for all projects so that if they go outside, the glue holds. I recently glued up some pine to make birdhouses (blue bird and wren). The green paint is the best. I am Irish and own a John Deere. The red is very attractive. You used it so often you have changed me.
I love the way you approach every repair and every restoration. Even the level of care with which you hold and present the item - whatever it may be - shows how much you love and appreciate these pieces of history.
Great job on both projects. Repairing the crucifix helps remind us that we are in Lent. It's easy to forget in today's busy distracting world. The wrench is beautiful. Just about any color you chose would look good. Older Plomb tools are rare at least around here. I only have a few.
Hi Scoutcrafter I always believed it was both. If march is warm at the beginning the end will be cold. If the beginning is cold the end will be warm. It depends on what it is like in the beginning. Its way more reliable than the groundhog thing in Feb.
Beautiful job on the cross, it looks like the one that hangs on my wall in my bedroom. My mother gave it to me after my father passed. Thank you for all your time and effort.
I just love the fact that you added the paint to them. I wonder if any tool makers ever had the idea of adding paint to their ratchets and breaker bars but didn't do so because of the issue with durability with handling and such. Either way I think they look great! Thank you my friend for another wonderful video! I always enjoy seeing what you have in store for us viewers.
Nice work on the cross repairTiteBond has become my favorite. I also still keep a bottle of Elmer's White glue for many uses. The orange in the pebble finish looks great. I like that font used on the Plvmb tools.
Nice work on the Plomb ratchet. Like has already been said Plomb is the parent company of Proto & they were manufactured in Los Angeles Ca before they discouraged heavy industries from operating in LA. By the way what type of buffing wheels do you use? Not the cloth polishing wheels but the initial wheel you used after the belt sander?
Nice repair on the cross👍 I like the green and orange but not as much as the red and blue. I followed your link but it said they are out of stock. I'll have to look around and see if I can find it over here some place.
I've got a Plomb ratchet my grandfather gave me. I don't think mine is as old as yours, though. I was going to mention it being similar to Proto. Proto, these days; cost almost as much as Snap-On. Plomb, Proto, Snap-On. All very good tools.
That is so true about weather here in the tristate area. We always have a little loll in early March before we get one last blast of cold weather and the winds pick up.
Hey John, your grandmother was spot on, every year I get fooled and plant my tomatoes out in March , and then frost hits in the UK 🤣.. love the green, I wonder.. could a clear resin be used on tools around the lettering after the colour, and flush to the top, 🤔 with light sand and buff afterwards? To seal in and make the Colour pop. Great video as always Cheers Rob
Both colors, actually all four colors are great. If you find a clear maybe you can find one with some fine grain sparkle in it. The fix in the cross is now probably stronger than the wood. At least that's what I've found in my woodworking. Have a great weekend.
Indeed! I recently ran across a guitar that someone had thrown out because it had a break in the neck. It's a Les Paul type with the set neck so I'd say they figured they couldn't replace it but it was a clean break so I took it home and used about 15cents worth of Tight Bond II glue. It's now one of my better playing guitars lol!
Great video as always Scout. I have a thing for orange as well👍. I’m glad you mentioned “it’s just a coat of paint” because I’ve seen some really good restorations receive some very negative comments just because of the colours used and god forbid if they don’t paint it the original colours. I always figure it’s their item so they can paint it any colour they want! After all, “it’s just a coat of paint” so the next owner can change it. That’s my rant😂😂. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
Stuart- Some Tools were designed to have color but cost cuts left the tools bare. I happen to enjoy a splash of color and contrast on many tools I own. Thanks!!!
Man I really love how that rachet came out. The color really helps the look as well. That cross is a work of art. The detail is really well done. Have a great weekend everyone. Stay safe out there 😺👍
Well done on that repair. That will hold a long time. Thanks for picking my school colors for the plumb. Blue is my favorite color, but green and orange are not far behind. A clearl epoxy could make any color really pop.
John my mother's mother used to say the exact same thing!! So my mother said it & i say it!! I still have my semi tropical potted plants inside. I am not moving them outside until the first full week in April!!
My weekend started of with a rip in my favorite boots ugh. Wish I could fix that. Strangely enough the blue is my favorite. Looks really classy. Lots to do here over the weekend, sweep the garden, get after the weeds, clean my dumpster, scrub the fence, paint the wheels on my car, wrap a parcel, clean the shop and free my bench up..and now they're stealing an hour this weekend here..hope you'll have a great weekend. One good thing about March flying by for you: almost time for elephants trunk! Hope you'll have a great weekend!
Green, but maybe due to St. Parick’s Day from last week, honestly they all have an appeal. If Plomb were still making those like that and offered them in those colors, I’d be at the hardware store every week. Here at the foot of the Allegheny Front March has buried us more than once; it wouldn’t surprise me at all. Great week of videos!
Beautiful work on the Plvmb! Detail is everything. The crucifix is (of course) well repaired, though it inspired my Catholic guilt as I ate my Cheeseburger while watching during Lent. I have a dispensation, but still...
Orange is my favorite color too Scoutcrafter but I’ve really been into greens lately. You can’t go wrong with those pebbled Plombs, any color looks great. Love the old crucifix. Looks like the same one you see in movies all the time. My mom always said that “if” March came in like a lamb it went out like a lion but “if” it came in like a lion it went out like a lamb. Just like all sayings about the weather its 100% right, about half the time. Take care 😃👍🏼
Those hollow cast figures are made via a process called "slush casting." You start with a permanent mold (i.e. one you re-use), then pour molten material into the mold. Only allow sufficient cooling to make a shell, then pour out the material that did not yet solidify. Much the same way many pottery/ceramic pieces are made.
Great video.... Very informative.... Thank you. With regard to the month of March, where I come from the saying regarding 'a lion and a lamb' is preceded by the word IF. For example IF in your area the month of March comes in like a lion (cold/wintery) it will go out like a lamb and IF the month of March comes in like a lamb (warming trend) it will go out like a lion. All the best to you. By the way today is March 25. That means you only have nine months to get my Christmas present - and visa versa. Time is flying by. Michael Bradley from Canada ;)
Yes Ben, The polished steel looks better but doesn't hold up as well under harsh environments as the factory coating. It's fine in my tool box here... =D
One thing I have found is you have to be really careful spraying Lacquer over anything, the thinners in Lacquer tend to craze so many other paints and coatings.. It does dry quickly though! =D
I always heard that March con in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. I guess maybe it depends on what part of the country you are from. I like red most of the time but that orange looked pretty awesome. Great show and Thank You for sharing!
I remember growing up. It seemed like everyone had crucifix in their home similar to the one you repaired. Either on the wall or on a mantle. Now, nobody does. And I prefer the orange. My coworker ( we are conveyor mechanics for a large distribution company) bought a new toolbox from HarborFreight the US General brand. And it’s a beautiful orange. Love it.
Orange, John, it's gotta be orange. It wouldn't hurt for Proto to introduce a "vintage" line of tools. After all, the working ends of their ratchets have never changed.
I remember Grandma always saying you could judge the end of March by the beginning of the month, if it came in like a lion cold with maybe snowy weather or heavy rain it'd go out like a lamb with weather that's warm and sunny, but if it came in like a lamb look out it'll go out like a lion.
That stype of Plomb ratchet with the pebble finish was only made from 1945 to 1948. You should only oil that style of ratchet because the little coil springs only apply a small amount of pressure to the pawls to make make them engage the drive wheel. If you use grease it can harden over time and not allow the pawls to make full contact with the drive wheel causing the pawls to slip on the drive wheel causing chips on the drive wheel teeth and cause the teeth to fail. If you ever need to rebuild a Plomb ratchat use a repair kit for a Proto ratchet of the same model. Kits can be found on eBay or just pick up a used Proto ratchet with the same model number and use the parts out of it. I have in my collection 74 Proto ratchets in this style, about 15 Plomb ratchets and 2 P&C ratchets all made by the same company. The repair kits fit all these ratchets from 1939 to the present models. Plomb & Proto also made ratchets for other companies like Sears, Firestone, M.Wards and OTC just to name a few. The Plomb pear head ratchet is the most copied ratchet design.
I'll take the orange. Always makes me happy! Kind of looks like an orange peel. I guess you could say the same thing about the green. Lime peel? I agree with David Spinney. The saying works either way. Great job on both projects.
Niiiiice 👌🏻 green all the way for me buddy, I was going to comment last video how blue and red look great and all but if I had a tool I could paint, like that I’d choose green, ☘️
Great job on the crucifix. I have a few religious items that belonged to my great grandparents that came from Italy when my mother came here to the U.S.
I like how the green looks contrasted with the shiny metal. Have you ever used the green on any SK tools? Might be cool to open one of the old green SK tool case and have some shiny tools with green paint. I like that you didn’t paint the Jesus. The crazing of the old paint looks great in my opinion. Nice job!
Idk if I've said this before on one of your videos. If I did, then you can disregard this comment. But I think it would be very cool, if you did a video and just showed, what brand of wire wheels you use and like. Which flap wheels you use and like. Which 1"x30" sanding belts you use and like. And so on. Basically whatever tools you use for your restorations, if you just walked us through what items you used for the different tools you use, I think it would be pretty awesome. Anyhow thanks for another awesome video my friend. Keep up the greatness. Also I would love to see what you figure out with the epoxy and the paint and all that. Alright, thank care.
Hi Brent- Here is a video I did a few years ago showing the different items I use... I have had 3 years of practice since then but the basics are still the same! Hope it helps! ua-cam.com/video/KmhMoGC86VA/v-deo.html
@@ScoutCrafter oh awesome. Thanks my friend. I just picked up a 10" from front to back. About 18" tall, and around 1" thick piece of I beam. To use for an anvil. I looked around online and couldn't find an anvil or something to use for one for the right price. And then ended up walking into the metal fab shop a couple doors down from my house and asking him. And he gave it to me. So I'm excited to get it cleaned up. And ready for use.. thanks for all the help my friend.
Great job as always! I love the inlay colors. Do you still have any of your Dads old boxing stuff? I made a speed bag platform and got back into it. I was looking at NOS everlast speed bags and thought of you.
Yes! My Dad was a wizard on the speed bag, he built a speed bag platform in the garage and I also have a 70# leather heavy bag down the basement. He only used the machined swivel that looked like a U joint. Super fast!!! =D He used to pop a bag every now and then when he hit it hard! LOL
All those colors were great. They have a candy look to them. Nice job on the cross! For some reason my wife has a cross over top just about every doorway in the house. Im not sure if she likes it or if it has some other meaning :)
These pebbled Plomb and Proto tools are very collectible. This is a short period after World War II when Plomb Tools was changing their name to Proto Tools, to avoid confusion with Plomb Hammers. All once made in Los Angeles, California, too.
Nice job on those items. I would like your help to identify a Millers Falls hand tool. I'd send a photo of it, but I don't know how to reach you. Maybe you know a source on the internet that has a 1980's or earlier catalog? I got the tool for three bucks at a vintage store, but have no idea of its name or purpose. It has a wood handle and the steel shaft end narrows at the tip with a little up-turn. The underside of the tip has two ground surfaces.
When I hear orange I always think of the KIX cereal commercial, “orange orange.” When I play Candyland with my grandson and draw an orange card, I call it “orange orange.” Now he has started calling it orange orange. When he starts school his teachers will wonder, “Why does he call this color orange orange?” Thanks for the fun. 🤠

I wonder if clear nail polish would work for a clear finish - I don't know, never tried it.
Good idea
I have clear nail polish down the shop just for small jobs. I never used it in this application. Might work!
I 've heard just that way. My Grandmother said it the same way as yours! The wisdom of past generations is fast fading away. This is troubling.

You have more than one 50/50 formulas. Which one did you use to remove the grease?
Paul- Whenever I refer to 50/50 I always mean acetone/ATF if I use another 50/50 I will always say what it is... =D
LOL
@@ScoutCrafter Nice!!! That brings me joy to know you still have those and shared that. Thank you.
Hello Paul! bicycleguy@aol.com Just send a pic!
Same as my area, Our Old People says, "March makes you look through the door, burns a pickaxe and a shovel." 😃
We are forecast for snow off and on this weekend! I was doing good betting back into the shop, but not this weekend.
When I hear orange I always think of the KIX cereal commercial, “orange orange.” When I play Candyland with my grandson and draw an orange card, I call it “orange orange.” Now he has started calling it orange orange. When he starts school his teachers will wonder, “Why does he call this color orange orange?”
Thanks for the fun. 🤠
What belts do you use and fibre wheel for the restoration?
Green is awesome!
I’m waiting for you to do a ratchet challenge. Boy do I got a candidate.
At first, when you said you have a repair of a religious item, I thought you meant the Dake! 😂
Also, on March. My mom taught me it was an either or situation that predicts how March will end.
Nice job on that socket wrench and the breaker bar. Your cross is technically a crucifix because it has the figure of Christ on it.
In like a lamb Out lion
What kind of paints do you use.?
I love the orange colour oo the ratchet. Orange is the national colour of the Netherlands and i'm often in that country.
That Millers Falls tool has stamped: NO 381-3 1/2
Bearing Scraper, would have cost about $1.20 in 1949. My understanding is they're used on Babbitt Bearings but I don't know too much about those.
@@rawbacon Thank you! Now, I wish I knew how it was used.
@@paulhurst4239 I just typed in "Babbitt Bearing" into UA-cam's Search and the 4th video that came up is called "A toolroom lathe spindle bearing re-scrape."........I scrolled thru it real quick and it shows a guy using a scraper, It might explain it, I only watched a few seconds.
@@rawbacon Thanks so much for the tip on where to look. Now I know what it was designed to do, I feel it will be a good useful tool for different scraping operations!
I like all the colors actually !!!!!!
Both colors and the cross came out great , you never told us the story of why you love orange soda so much
Jorge- That is so funny! I was just thinking of that today! I was having lunch with my Sister and she said "We never had soda growing up" I told her I acquired a taste later on in the service... I will tell the story as soon as the weather gets warm... Promise! Thanks Jorge!!!!!!!
Jesus Christ that came out great!! You make us proud of ya Bud!!☻
