    I find that there are certain design elements and a level of quality that experienced collectors are looking for, and that luxury brands _generally_ do a better job of meeting. That doesn't preclude an affordable watch from occasionally hitting a home run, but _in general_ luxury brands do a better job of it.

    • @adventureswithtime
      @adventureswithtime  Рік тому

      Very true. In addition to quality, what aspects are you looking for that luxury watches hit? This is an interesting question.

      @@adventureswithtime The most noticeable is that luxury watches are _smaller._ Just look at the size of a Rolex Submariner (40mm) and the Tudor Black Bay 58 (39mm) vs most other dive watches on the market (42mm+). It's like that in pretty much every category. Another example is the ball-and-baton of the Rolex Submariner--you'll notice that virtually no one else does a true ball-and-baton (probably for fear of getting sued), so they always make the batons a different shape instead of a plain rectangle. Similar with the Oyster Perpetual and the double indiced 3-6-9.

    Of course its high end now because the craftsmanship is way better

    I've been collecting for about 3 years, have acquired a dozen watches or so, but have never spent over about $600 for a watch. Further, I have no intention to! For my financial situation, it just would not make sense. If you threw me a couple grand, with no restrictions, yeah I might be compelled to buy a couple thousand dollar watch. But I do enjoy the "lower end" just fine, thank you. Enough variety and options exist for me at this level.
    Now, I have become more discerning to some extent. I've grown weary of the NH35 family of movements. They just don't perform well, in my experience. So I prefer the Miyota, or Sellita, or maybe something off the beaten path, just for fun. So SOME snobbery has crept in. ;)

    • @adventureswithtime
      @adventureswithtime  Рік тому

      I wouldn't call it snobbery. I share your point about NH35 movements. There are other movements as you suggest that micro brands can use. Some do cost more than the Seiko movements.

    My collection consists of micro brands under 1000$. I dont have a hard definition of micro brand but kind of weight the number of watches the brand makes and under 1000$. I own 4 high dollar ( over 3000$) and don’t consider them in my collection. They are simply my personal watches. I haven’t added to my personal watches in over 10 years and it took me over thirty years to purchase them.

      Sounds like you have a nice mix of watches that you really enjoy. Have you ever lost interest in a watch and sold it?

    • @chasfoster9895
      @chasfoster9895 Рік тому +1

      No, but that doesn’t mean I wear them. I collect to collect. I find I wear the ones that are the best timekeepers. I have several older Seiko that you might as well wear a sundial for time keeping.

    Interesting topic. I think it is demonstrably false that all watch collections even migrate partially into the luxury space, much less fully. But I think the impression stems mostly because people just starting out in a hobby (be it watches or something else) often choose to be cautious on how much they spend. As they get deeper their willingness to spend more in service to the hobby *may* increase. But it just depends on so many factors.
    I got my first luxury watch about 15 years ago but I didn't really start collecting until 2020. I've bounced all over on the price tiers, and sold/traded out many pieces. My collection is currently 13 watches. If we just defined luxury as watches that cost over $1,000 then seven of my watches are sub-luxury and six are luxury. I do tend to look more in the luxury space when considering new watches. However, I do not rule out other watches. I especially favor lower cost watches if I want to experiment with something new that I'm not sure I'll like (for example, I got a quartz Tissot PRX to assess my opinions on actually wearing an integrated bracelet watch).

    • @adventureswithtime
      @adventureswithtime  Рік тому +1

      I totally agree. I too have a mix of watches in different tiers. I think it great to one day wear a luxury watch and the next wear a very affordable watch that draws just as much interest as the other.

    My hot take is that pretty much every watch is actually a luxury watch.

    • @adventureswithtime
      @adventureswithtime  Рік тому

      Yes, "Luxury" has several meanings. Strictly speaking, I agree, all watches are a luxury. We need a new word for watches that have very high quality and design and therefore cost more.

      @@adventureswithtime I have a seamaster 2531.80, which I would consider to be luxury despite it verging on vintage. I also have a seamaster from the 50s with a bumper movement. A lot of my vintage watches are quite nice imo. I have a 17 jewel trench watch from 1905 and a minerva issued by the 3rd reich also. On the modern end I also have a gshock rangeman GPR B1000, which I'd consider digital luxury I suppose. Most people aren't rocking a 600$ gshock.
