In this video I am going to show you how I wash synthetic hair before I install it onto my head. The main reason why I take this extra step of cleansing the hair is because synthetic hair has a chemical coating on it known as Alkaline Lye which is used to make the synthetic fibers heat and wear resistant. This chemical can sometimes be very irritating to the skin on the scalp, especially of you have a sensitive scalp or a scalp condition. I have scalp psoriasis so it is very important that I minimize the possibility of irritating my scalp while still being able to utilize affordable protective styles in order to grow my hair. This wash process will remove the alkaline coating, cleanse, and condition the hair before I install it onto my head.
    CLEANSE
I start by filling a basin with hot water and add some apple cider vinegar to the water. Next I add a capful of the shampoo to the water making sure fully mixes in with the water. I add the hair to the water and fully submerge them and working the shampoo/water mixture through the hair. It is important to keep the tie around the middle of the hair during this process to prevent tangling. I let that sit for at least 20 mins and then I drain the water. Next, I refill the basin with Lukewarm to cool water to rinse the hair. During this step, I squeeze the hair with my hand while doing a folding a pressing motion in the water with the hair. I avoid rubbing the hair to minimize friction, and then I drain the water again.
    CONDITION
I fill the basin again with warm water and add a capful of the conditioner. Once the conditioner dissolves in the warm water, I finish filling the basin with cool water. I submerge the hair in the basin work it in a little bit. Then I let it sit for 5 minutes. After letting it soak I drain the water and rinse the hair in cool water again.
    DRY
I lay a large towel across my sink. I remove the hair from the basin and lay them across the top half the towel and lightly detangle the strands making sure they are all laying straight. I fold the bottom half the towel over the top and roll the towel up like a burrito to begin squeezing out the excess water. Next, I roll the towel burrito into a cinnamon roll and squeeze it some more to continue removing the excess water. This drying method keeps the hair in one position while squeezing out the water so there is no friction from the towel rubbing against the hair. I do the same drying technique for the curly hair. I gently wrap the t-shirt around the hair and carefully wring out the t-shirt going downwards.
After squeezing out the excess water, I either lay the hair out or hang them up to air dry overnight, and if I need the hair to dry in a few hours, I simply let it dry outside. You can also use a blowdryer on cool to finish up the drying if you need to.
And that’s it for this video! If you try these products, please let me how they work for you! Feel free to leave any questions down below. I’ll see you in the next video. God Bless!

Very informative and thorough video! I notice that synthetic hair irritates my skin (when hanging down, towards my face), so I will definitely add these extra steps.

Thanks for the video! When wash your hair, do the ends start to poke out of the twists?

It does, and it’s really noticeable when the section of my hair was too big for the amount of hair I added to the twist lol. But when it starts to look really bad, I usually do a re-twist, starting around the perimeter. This is also why I try to wait as long as possible before washing my twists. I usually try to go about a month before washing them.
