Hong Kong is one of the wettest cities in Asia. But despite the torrential rains, the city is safe from large-scale flooding that routinely paralyses other Asian cities. It’s all thanks to a massive - and expensive - network of underground stormwater drainage tunnels that safely diverts rainwater to the sea. Follow SCMP’s Alkira Reinfrank on a trip deep beneath the city’s streets into a massive tunnel system that’s hidden right beneath our feet.

Anyone who has been to Hong Kong knows that the city is full of crazy mega projects like these. Amazing is also the ability to basically traverse half of the city through underground passages and shopping malls, many of which feature flat airport like escalators to speed up the journey.

Even with these the 1000mm of rain that fell on September 7th/8th still caused widespread flooding in many areas. Imagine how much worse it would have been without them.

They opened the flood gates of Shenzhen, flooding parts of Hong Kong in the process, go figure. They did the same before with Beijing, flooding Hebei province and killing who knows how many people in the process as the announcement was given to do so while the process was already underway. That called affective catastrophe management, leaving no room for widespread evacuations.

The infrastructure is in placed to alleviate flood and is well-maintained. Most cities don't have such a large system.

lol..Check out STORM tunnel in Malaysia built way back in 2003 and it a dual purpose with car carridgeway and dual big flood water drainage tunnel system tht run across the city.

H.K under transport systems has plenty of surprises, specially its water ways, designed for flood control. It is remarkable as well as designed to last for many years. The Railway system is one of its kind, it is modern, and most of all connected all the way to Great Britain and the U.S, Thank you China, HK, Great Britain for all of these developments and succeeding improvements.*********NON AI**************NON REVERSE********

This is impressive to see! What's amazing is that we're not dealing with infrastructure from decades before, the city is actively building and adding to the efficiency of transport and life even now!

Instead of draining it to the sea, why not store it somewhere. To use it during the dryer months?

Being one of the Wealthiest City we are a privileged bunch, We have plenty of drinking water from our reservoirs across the City with Mainland China providing us a backup and then we have a separate sewage water for our toilet, so you see we don't need to

HK is an engineering marvel in many ways and even right now as we went from T3 to T8 earlier than forecasted warnings were sent out. Windows are taped, storm drains cleared and employees are sent home to ready the city for the storm. It is like everyone is aware of what to do and when. Very cool to actually see the tunnels. Would be nice to see a flashlight shone about the darkness and a map of the project.

This system was built for HK Island from causeway bay to sheung wan where the flooding was particularly serious every time it poured. You can see this system was very well built when the rainstorm this time didn’t flood sheung wan one bit.
