Liberal leaning independent here! I gotta be honest. These kinds of conversations are so irritating these days. We've overcorrected so much that the mere mention that someone's race could be one of many personal characteristics -- like their hair color, weight, socioeconomic class, etc -- sounds like a crime. But it just simply doesn't make sense.
Sunny tends to pretty snobby on the View and I didn't like how she approached the conversation. But at the same time, her initial line of questioning was logical: this color blindness theory is damaging. What's the purpose of throwing race out completely? Because Americans owned slaves back in the day and people are sensitive about it today? What's wrong with simply acknowledging that race is one of many factors that makes up an individual?
If the right and left were listening to each other, concepts like "Intersectionalism" that came out of the slightly misguided pink pussycat hat movement would seem like a more accurate description of social issues we see in society. Their premise was that race was amongst several other characteristics such as gender, class, psychological factors, etc that impact our lives.
If you want moderates behind ideas like Coleman's, you won't be successful by denying the obvious. Turns out people hate being gaslit about things they can obviously see with their eyes like someone's eye color or race. Funny example of this is my 4th grade dance teacher that insisted I, a dark skinned black woman who was a little girl at the time, wear the same blush and pink lipstick as my white besties that signed up for ballet with me. She threatened my mom and my mom didn't push back because she had already spent all this money on the class....I look back at the photo and think this 1) I looked like an absolute clown; and 2) this is what "colors blindness" does. It makes stupid dance teachers forget that a black child CLEARLY can't wear the same shade of pink as her white friends.

I'm 62 years old. When i was a kid we were told the black people wanted to be teated like everyone else and not trated based on their skin color. To be color blind. See me as a person, not my skin color. As a kid i guess that people were treated by their skin color. I didn't see it. The grade school i went to was at least half black. All the kids hung out together. Never not played with someone because of skin color. I have lived my life treating everyone like i wanted to be treated. Now, we are hearing the opposite. I am black and proud. See my blackness. We want to be separated from eveyone else (at least from whites). Ok. I see more racism now that i have ever seen in my life. Its not coming from white people. Its coming from black people. What happened in the past 50 years happen for these feelings to be so angry? There arent people being lynched. I havent seen people being turned down for jobs based on skin color. Its based on abilities. That is based on my friends feelings also, black, white, hispanic... so what happened?

Now just in the last 8 years before Trump then all the division they tried to stir up when he won and really bad since Biden started running that's all they talk about!!! But that's OK tho because we are all of every race are waking up to what's going on now. Thank God.

We have made lots of progress. But I think he got a lot of votes because the left would have felt guilty if they did not vote for him.
He was very divisive to me.
Very early on he jumped on a cop for doing his job. For checking on a person who looked to the neighbors like he was trying to break into a house. Blame the neighbors for calling the police. Not the police for doing what they were called to do.
Today the police would not even respond to a simple day time B&E.

You can't advance leftism without victims. Convince someone they're oppressed, point out the oppressors, and you'll have them eating out of your hands.
Race was a non-issue by the late 90s/early 2000s, and with the advent of social media that all changed -- because after the 2000 election the far left was bound and determined to take another stab at "burning this bitch down." Racism was the tried and true vehicle through which they'd accomplish their objectives. Peel back the onion and you soon discover that "racism" and "oppressed vs. oppressor" is nothing more than a redux of "the proletariat vs. the bourgeoisie." Marxism in drag. And the proponents have been quite up front with that.
When they holler "justice" and "equity" what they're really hollering for is homogeneity -- a zero-sum game in which individual rights are taken from one group and redistributed to another by force of the State in order to achieve social and economic parity. They call it "progressive" despite the fact that this political ideology has been around for 184 years now and has never worked -- without the application of force by the government. Coleman Hughes is much more even-handed about this, and from that comes the strength of his argument.

I've been following US politics since the Watergate scandal brought Tricky Dickie unstuck. Furthermore, I've been to and through a good swathe of the country on a good number of occasions from 1984.
But the main point I want to make is that I have a vivid recollection of watching the HBO's News Hour back in 1987, and for 15 miniutes there were two federal politicians, and a professor of History from George Washington University openly discussing the history of slavery. And the academic was talking about the student carriculum.

Omgoodness, this youngman Coleman Hughes was so amazing. Listening to him as a white 70 year old lady felt for the first time that there is hope in the next generation, and it was not all for nothing. We have struggled for so long, and it makes you weep thinking nothing has made a difference. First time in a very Long time I feel there may be hope for all Americans. Maybe if we could rid ourselves of the anger and eliminate the naysayers and rabble rousers, Americans may have chance to succeed. Right now, it still looks bleak, but this young man was a ray of hope. Peace begins with me!!! God Bless.

Coleman’s whole approach, it seems to me, is “DON”T assume that because I am black that I think this. that or another. As for Whoopi’s stance. I am a white southerner who is twenty years older than she, and I know from my personal observations how much better the situation has become since the 1950s. One major reason is that so many white racists, the people with a deep hatred of blacks. have now died. With luck, by the time her generation disappears, whites and blacks, race will be a minor consideration. Unless they try to take political advantage of whites who see blacks such as she as tools of a largely white elite class that threatens them. I see Coleman as far more confident of his powers than she is of hers.

@@evelyndonnell5522 Well, even in East Texas there were whites who were liberal minded about race. My own attitudes derived paradoxically because when I was very young we had a black maid who would sometimes take me to her house in Cedar Top. I was pretty precocious but yon enough that she would talked with her friends around me. my lasting impression was that they didn’t sound very different from most whites, at least the working class whites in my neighborhood. If I felt superior to blacks it was because of class feeling. What totally shattered my tolerance of Jim Crow was when the Klan killed those girls in Sunday schools. It was the cowardice of the act.
