Well done! I don't think I've ever seen this documented. Great work. You may want to make a small correction in the description. As with many fish species, it's the male, NOT the female, that guards and protects the young.
This is incredible footage. I have a 2 ft long choupique ( as we call them in Louisiana) who comes when i call by knocking on my dock. He comes and eats and hangs out with me. The way their their tail fin ripples is mesmerizing!
Definitely a fish that is misunderstood, most people consider them a trash fish but they are anything but. I really appreciate this species, they fight hard and been around since the dinosaurs. Thanks for the comment 👊
Your not alone in that. The most misunderstood fish there is. Pan fishers love to toss em ashore to die it's sickening. God forbid I ever witness it the person's gonna wish they didn't. 💪
@@nickfoco1977i believe its more of a fact they are uninformed because this native fish very often gets confused for a snakehead which are invasive in most places
150 million years ago you could've watched the same thing it just hits me every time i watch this video. They swam with dinosaurs! they are still common and in our backyard. just crazy to me.
At first I thought I was watching tadpoles, then I saw big mama bowfin coming in. Bro, this is spectacular footage with perfect music!! Blown away bro!!! Great video my friend!!!!
Love the video. Just discovered I have Bowfin in my private lake. The only thing in it is bowfin and gills. The lake is rarely fished. Had one nail my worm bait while I was fishing for bluegill. I had no idea what it was! Ran and got my bass rod. To my suprise it was still there and aggressively attacked the lure. My buddy said it was a snakehead and to kill it. I looked it out and found all about this very cool fish. It weighed 10lb 10oz. Saw it again. Turns out "he"was guarding the babies that were in the shallows. I thought it was tad poles. There is another one that is even bigger. He has only bit once so far and straightened my hook right out! Thanks for this footage.
Thanks for the kind words, they are a very misunderstood fish. I feel very different about them after having this experience. I'm glad you enjoyed my vid and appreciate your comment 👍
It was pure luck. Was coming back in from a kayak trip and she was in the shallows by the dock, she just hung out and let me film her. Changed how I feel about these critters for sure
WOW man that was some awesome video...You could really see them well. I love to watch under water videos, but this is definitely one of the coolest IMO.
This is good work here. I’m a fisherman but I fell in love with filming and I can tell that you have the same passion. This is art; I just joined your channel. Thanks for stopping by mine.
Thanks buddy I really appreciate that I am a fisherman at heart but this make me feel differently about this species for sure I feel you on many different levels 👍👍
I had absolutely no idea that they guarded their young. I'm awe struck....I doubt it's well known. There is a giant fish in the amazon like a bowfin called pic'carararu and it gets about 12 foot long. Unlike a bowfin it is a taste fish. I ate it 3 nights in a row, delicious.
Thanks David, I didn't either and someone explained to me that it was the Male that defends the fry. And here I was thinking it was the mom lol. I know alot of people that eat them here in the southeast but I'll stick to my crappie fillets. Appreciate you stopping by and commenting
@@OFFFishing I dont think it's the male. I have to check my fish biology but I really doubt it's the male. I dont think any male fish of any species do that....maybe seahorses....heck I dont know but I doubt it....now I'm gonna go research amia calva....I remember that genus and species....it the only fish genus and species I know.
Doing some more research after catching my first bowfin at my secret spot, and holy shit it’s my best so far, 2 foot fatty, 24” even. These fish are insane fighters and I would even go as far as to call them predator fish. In my studies I found the most likely fish in that low oxygen water would be the gar, bowfin, and black bullhead catfish (which we caught one of before in these waters lol). This video was absolutely amazing, such a sick creature to let you film without him swimming off! These things seem to be a tough fish to locate/catch/film etc… took me 6 months of religiously fishing that little pond to catch the monster! Half a hotdog on a circle hook is all it took too 🤦♂️ not the worms, fancy swim baits, poppers, jitterbugs, jigheads, or even a rubber frog which seems to be a main source of food out there! I hope that bait tip helps any other angler shooting for mudfish too lol! Thanks again for such a cool video
Thanks buddy I appreciate that. I was coming back one day from fishing and there she was hanging out in the shallows. She let me do my thang, I felt blessed
Very cool I seen that happen yesterday, there were thousands around the Bowfin and a large 3+lb Smallie kept getting his ass beat when he tried eating em, but the fish wouldn't take my bait, oh well if it would of ruined the protection of the babies I am glad I did not catch the massive Bowfin, I would of released right away after a quick pic
My favorite fish pound for pound blows a northern Pike out the water when it comes to the harder fighter. Makes me sick when I see them just thrown off shore to rot. Pathetic. That's a good dad right there(males keep there spot) females lose the spot.

That awesome thanks for the comment 🍻
Thanks for the awesome footage. I love to show it to the children who come to feed my bowfin. I never knew these fish were so incredible.

Yes me too they are very cool creatures👊
Indeed as did the Gar, they also lived along side the dinosaurs.
They look like pollywogs! the parent looks to be smiling at times! great footage! thank you so much!

Thanks brother exactly how I felt👍👍
@Austin Martín Hernández exactly lot of people dont know they male watches the young
Wow. That's excellent!! Love how she's guarding her fry. Thanks for sharing.
It's actually the male that protects the eggs and fry
AHHHHH!!! This video is EVERYTHING!!!! Nature is so beautiful and your music choice is on point!

Momma is guarding her little "Bait Ball"! To the tune of "Gold Finger", I hear "Bowfin-ger", Haha.
@Austin Martín Hernández Oh, thanks for the correction.

FUN FACT | It is the male in the footage after mating the male watches the young till there big enough to fend for themselves
That was very cool footage and they are one neat looking fish

Are bowfins and dogfish the same? I’ve seen a lot thrown and dried on rocks. Thinking they’re probably nasty and invasive?
I think so but they are native to my state of Florida and a very misunderstood species. Appreciate you stopping by the channel!
Very similar to snakehead ..are they related ?
@tazmax72 no not related far as I know
Awesome
