Beijing 2008, I was a little lad then. We could see the huge firework footprints from our window. That moment still gives me goosebumps till this day.

I think Beijing's 2008 Opening was way ahead of its time. There's simply no other openings that can surpass it, not even its own when it hosts the Winter Olympics in 2022.
Athens 2004 also had certain technical elements that audiences may not directly see but were also way ahead of its time such as draining gallons of water in a mere 2 minutes to a dry surface and the laser water screen that projected a spinning dna double helix.

Beijing 2008 opening ceremony will always have a special place in my mind for the best opening ceremony.
I still think nothing so far can top Beijing Olympics in 2008! That drum performance, torch relay and whole Chinese culture just fascinating!

@@mercury6765 You have to be somewhat a marksman with a bow to do that. Rebollo flung the arrow on a perfect line with the cauldron, which had gas lines in it to help ignite the flame once it flew past.
If the arrow was too high or low, it would have missed the gas line.
The drummers countdown of Beijing 2008 is the best moment of all time.

Barcelona 1992 definitely had the best cauldron lighting
not only because of the epic bow and arrow shot, but also they got a Paralympian to do it too! Antonio remains the only Paralympian to light the Olympic cauldron. He deserved an honorary Olympic medal for that incredible feat, on top of his Paralympic medals

'The Queen' jumping out of a helicopter with Daniel Craig has to be the best moment.
Honestly, the most incredible part of London 2012 was the massive display of their history they pulled off with some of the most badass music I've ever heard.
And in the same city, 1948... it was the Scouts who led the way. Nobody could be more fitting for a new, international era. Youth who hadn't fought the last war, all part of an global organisation focused around cooperation and self-improvement.
Athens 2004 always my favorite. I watched it from Opening to the Closing. I was very impressed & in awe. Especially to have witnessed the Olympics at a conscious age- 16 at time. Before then, I'd only heard of the Atlanta Games & glanced the Sydney Opening Ceremony. Beijing was impressive as well, in my top 3.
Athens 2004 was such an emotional opening. It was more than a spectacle. It deeply moved me.

Beijing was the best in the Opening ceremony as well as the closing ceremony... It gave us Indians hope that we can win more than a single MEDAL in the Games. And wow, an Individual Gold Medal for India as well. Beijing was the start and best ever performance by India in the Games. Hopefully we can surpass it by winning atleast 2 Gold Medals and reach double digits in total....

In my opinion: The "Queen" skydiving is still the most original and Muhammad Ali lighting the fire is still the most moving moment for me.

By comparison with the average Hollywood action movie, the money spent on these ceremonies (typical worldwide audience approximately a billion) is peanuts

In my opinion, the most spectacular Olympic opening ceremony in history was Athens 2004, it was like seeing the most colossal theater production in the world on a journey from the beginnings of Hellenic mythology and the wonderful culture of the Aegean to the present day. It will hardly be surpassed, considering that the IOC wants to scale down the Olympians to avoid animosity towards the event. Regarding the lighting of the Olympic cauldron, I think the most iconic was Barcelona 1992, however I consider that the most spectacular due to the scale of production and effects was Sydney 2000.

I have read consultations on many websites that classify the Athens 2004 opening ceremony as the most beautiful in history, others think that Beijing 2008, others consider that it was Barcelona 1992. In each case, a show concept conceived with an ambition different.
Beijing 2008 was apotheosis and extravagant on all sides, revealing the Chinese sentiment towards the western world of the bigger, taller and more massive the better. A multimillion-dollar show with masterful mass choreography conceived to leave everyone with their mouths open and to make China's ambition as an economic power very clear. I think nobody disputes that.

In a matter of 20 years a nation stood so tall that it even conducted the world's largest sporting event.

Not as impressive as a nation that managed it just 3 years after WW2 ended whilst in the middle of rebuilding and rationing!
The opening ceremony in 2008 must be one of the best in history. Those who attack it without hesitation are exposing your ignorance. What you don't know is how much time and energy it takes to rehearse such a shocking performance, as well as the national connotation expressed by the performance. I think the shock and sense of identity of this kind of art are the same for all mankind. I'm talking about people.
The human printing press performance was mind blowing.
I would say the olympic openings and closings from 2000 up until 2008 I would say are mind-blowing. After the 2000s, pretty much it's been less spectacular as I got older. However, with the paris olympics occuring nearly 100 years after it was once hosted in 1924, considering two of the greatest athletics in track and field at that time which inspired the 1981 film Chariots of Fire, that has to be something special and a honor for paris, france to host it again on the same year as it occurred back in 1924.

All in all, fair to say London 2012 opening ceremony was just overall breathtaking. Danny Boyle smashed it. Pandemonium scene is my absolute favourite, the way the portrayed the industrial revolution was incredible.
I am just thinking about the guy proposing the idea for 1992 with the flaming arrow across the crowd 🤣 plus, giving the role to a paralympic athlete. You must have serious balls 😁
