You could load them up with your pedals before take off, reload from heights when gliding and land to reload at various stops for long distances, (rest as needed). Possibly helicopters would be better for this application because they can land and take off almost anywhere.
The problem with that would be friction. I was thinking that instead of turning the motor directly the pilot could turn an electric generator and you could have a buffer power supply(batteries). But I don’t think that wouldn’t be practical either. Batteries are heavy and generators are far form 100% efficient.
