I put a mini split system in the engine room of a 53 ' Hatteras . wasn't much more than the cost of one marine unit and no more worrying about clog water or something breaking and it flooding the boat. As you said you think they could come up with something better.
We have a dinghy on the fore hatch and the only other hatch in the aft cabin is too close to the main sheet. With the way it fits in the companionway we actually don’t have to pull it out for quick day sails and we get to keep a small cockpit table
The other problem is that most marine sitcom are 12 or 24 volts. On bigger boats now the have 48 volts systems. But it remains hot and water is a problem
Window unit is the way to go. I had a marine unit in my last boat. All the wiring, 2 more seacocks and thru-hulls, etc. Meh. Window unit is in the way, but works as good, cheap, easy to replace, no more holes in the boat.
It is a bit in the way, but Texas is hot, especially this summer. That set-up will last you at least 2x as long for a fraction of the cost. A bit of inconvenience is totally worth it.
Nice work! If you need to pull it while sailing, a mini split would allow for a permanent install, wouldn't it? Clunky condenser to be placed outside, of course...
@@twohalf-hitches Ahh, never thought about the fact that you only have battery power when sailing. And I assume deck space for solar panels is far too small for anything useful... Now that's an engineering challenge... A couple of large LFP batteries and an inverter so you can use AC for about 2 hours a day...? lol All the best!
Lol, I bought a marineair unit and watched your video to install. I have not installed it yet but good to know I need to drop a hose down deep into the lake to pull up cooler water in Texas summer but not a live aboard and will only use a couple days in a row. I do have a window unit but it is tiny and used just to work on the boat installs. Also are you using dock power, does it work when cruising?
It should work a bit better if it's not continuously running, but definitely be careful when it gets super hot out! We're just using it on dock power, when we get cruising we'll probably leave it behind.
Hey there, Sailors. I am back at my boat in Kemah and wanted to know if you wanted to catch some night this week for dinner, I am buying and talk about boats, sailing, and the misery of both. LOL. Let me know if you want to get together. We could meet at Jackies or somewhere else.
7:55 wait.. didn't you just say that your an engineer?! i mean, why are you not adapting that window unit to be just like the marine.. you just said it yourself, its the same principal. lets think about it for just 1 minute. window unit uses air between two surfaces. one outside, and one inside. why couldnt you make an air duct adaptor to attach to the front and back of the window unit, and make a air handler to swap air in and out from outside, and inside? then you could mount it back where the marine unit was, and be able to sail with it without taking it down? why are you taking the idiot approach and making your boat look like a homeless camp with AC? use your god given talants and make a air handler for it.. it cant be that hard. and why do you need capital? just how much capital? surely not that much when window units are soo damn cheap compared to marine units.
Because as an engineer I know better than to run that much ducting through the boat. It would have to be massive, at least 10inch diameter, insulated duct to bring enough air flow through the unit and we would lose that much more of our precious storage on board it we did that. Not to mention every bend in the duct is a huge efficiency loss. Our solution is the most energy and space efficient system possible for the way our boat is laid out. And the capital is to invest in designing/building new systems that are more friendly to boat owners, it takes a lot of engineering time, resources, and manufacturing facilities to build air conditioners.
Why don’t you just go like everybody else on the planet except US Americans and just NOT use AC and actually do sth good for the environment for a change? I guess it’s not hot enough and you want more extreme weather. Enjoy
Not sure where in the world you're referencing but last time I checked air conditioning is not an exclusively American technology, but if you want I can flip it inside out and cool off the whole planet with it while we're not on board. Or we can continue to use it guilt free because Texas gets 40% of its energy from renewables and it's only getting better ;)

Absolutely!
Awesome job guys! 💜
Thank you! 😊
Why not install the Home Depot AC in the overhead hatch or foredeck hatch instead of the companionway?
We have a dinghy on the fore hatch and the only other hatch in the aft cabin is too close to the main sheet. With the way it fits in the companionway we actually don’t have to pull it out for quick day sails and we get to keep a small cockpit table

Absolutely agree!
Do you have a cabin top hatch? seen a lot of people put a RV type ac on the cabin top...
We store our dinghy on top of the hatch otherwise that would also work

So true! Love being able to get rid of thru-hulls!
am confused you got loads of cool water under boat so draw water from outside and fan and water temp from sea cool the boat?
The water isn’t cool in the summer time, that’s the issue
ua-cam.com/video/zGRDEHkAxvo/v-deo.htmlsi=KrzbRvm0ZgqRO7GJ this guy got a good way that saves you using the entrance@@twohalf-hitches
Yes that works for some boats, but we store our dinghy on the deck hatch so it will not work here
Houston summers aren't that hot. Just sweat it out until our 3 days of fall/winter. Jk. Great video as always.
😂😂

Maybe but it would be taking up deck space somewhere. We won't have the power to run it while sailing so it doesn't need to be permanently installed

Howdy neighbor! Sorry for the late reply, didn't see the notification. Send us a message on Facebook or Instagram if you want to set something up!
also you sweating like crazy saying how good the unit is ?
Because believe it or not, I was outside prior to hitting the record button and came inside to cool off 😉

The worst thing about cruising is boat bums.
If we see any we’ll let them know you think so 😉
