Courtney and Josh are two sailors who just tied the knot! Come join us on our new adventures as we move towards our goal of traveling the world together (with Gypsy and D'Artagnan of course!)
The SIMPLE lithium battery installation
There are SO many options when it comes to installing a lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery on a boat or yacht. There's a lot of conflicting information as well, some people may try to talk you into complicated systems that you don't actually NEED!
We're here to help sort through the noise, and give you the fundamentals for your boat's lithium battery setup! What's required to meet the ABYC standards is actually much less complicated than what's available out there. Need help designing something specifically for your boat? Reach out to us on Facebook or Instagram, we'd love to help you!
Here is the bill of materials for everything we showed in this system if you want to build it yourself!
- 12V 100Ah Pro Smart Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery w/Bluetooth & Self-heating Function
- Victron Lynx Distributor
- Victron Battery Protect (smart switch)
- Victron Energy Orion XS 12/12-50A DC-DC battery charger
- Blue Sea Systems 5191 Fuse Block Terminal 30-300 Amp
- Victron Battery Switch On/Off 275A
- Too many fuses to count!
Accessories shown:
- Victron Lynx Shunt VE.Can (to measure the current flow)
- Victron Cerbo GX MK2, GX and S GX (to connect the smart devices to the monitoring system)
- Victron | GX Touch 50 (touch screen monitor)

In this episode, we swap the seals on our leaky diesel pump! Learning how to do complex engine repairs ourselves is our way of preparing to cruise around the world. When you're in the middle of nowhere, you can't just call up a mechanic to fix things for you. The Perkins 4.108 is one of the most used diesel engines in boats from the 70s and 80s. We're replacing our chainplates to update the rigging on Anticipation! Chainplates are a critical piece of sailboat hardware, when they fail the mast can come down. It's a safety issue for sailors that can strike without warning if you're not careful. Do you know what your chainplates look like? It can be such a simple job to replace them, there's no reason to let them get this bad. Make sure y...
NEVER install a marine air conditioner again!

We're ditching our marine A/C unit and so should you! We've HAD it with the expensive, unreliable, inconvenient, bulky units that we have had over the past few years. We had a Dometic unit for 2 years, it died, we had a MarinAire unit for 2 years, it also died! So we made the switch to a commercially available window unit and couldn't be happier. What does a couple do when they find themselves between two boats?? In this episode, we're working together towards our dreams! Anticipation had previously been Josh's boat, but now we want to make it feel like it belongs to both of us. Courtney's boat is too small, and Josh isn't getting any shorter. Josh's boat needs a lot of work, but it's possible to make it feel like ours. Psst - Hey you w...

Starting our new adventure - Redfish Island
The NidePlast is interesting stuff. Another way to refit the upper skin would have been to have placed your cut several inches inside of where you ended up running it, beveling both the edge of the upper skin and the edge of the surrounding deck, and after the NidePlast is put down, laying up successively narrower strips of fiberglass tape on top of the bevel to re-form the junction between the patch and the surrounding boat.
Definitely would work that way as well!
This system is so cool, can you swap my golfcart to lithium batteries!!! great video!!
That would be a fun project! 😁
You showed a large blue box for your bus bar at first, but in your setup you show amazon type bus bars? What's that about?
The main bus bar is the big blue box, it’s Victron’s Lynx Distributor. It’s connected to the Lynx Shunt in my setup. The plain bus bars you see in the setup are for specific circuits that my boat is wired for, which is why I didn’t mention them, your boat might not need them at all
@@twohalf-hitches Thanks for clarifying
Its good to see another video of the ol girl. You mentioned the water maker, trust me when my wife and I owned Anticipation, we used the water maker maker often and we were never without very good fresh water. Good to see you making vids again. Thanks
Unfortunately we’re probably going to have to get rid of the water maker, but there’s a lot of new options out there!
Great video... I was eyeballing that Tatoosh on Yachtworld. Looks like a cool boat especially since it's already converted to electric propulsion. Keep us posted!
Thanks for watching! It's a cool boat for sure, we'll try to share the story with it soon!
Thank you for this great information and candid conversation!
Appreciate you watching! 😁
Do you recall the paint color/brand that matches the Perkins?
I didn’t use an exact match, just a generic blue engine paint
Look up Dr seyfried. Sending lots of love
Thanks for the recommendation!
Thank you for sharing your journey in its rawness and truth. These are experiences that are so unique, but that we will all likely have to go through at some point, so just the validation that others have gone through it as well can be so comforting. I appreciate y'all's hard work on this video and your openness in sharing these intimate moments with the world. It matters. I'm so happy that you are back to being cancer free and wish you all the best in your continuing recovery and journey. Cheers!
Now I understand why you went to.the hospital. Youre such a strong victirious and courageous soul Courtney. Thank you for sharing your story. Makes me sad to see you cry. No more cancer. Praise God! 🎉
Excellent video guys, glad I got to be apart of it! ❤😊
Thank you for helping make it great!! ❤️❤️❤️
I recognize those snowshoes! But, seriously, thank you all for the vulnerability and willingness to share ❤
I'm so sorry this happened to you guys. You are both so strong and resilient, and I admire you for that. Thank you for sharing your journey, as challenging as it was to do so, because it will help others out there struggling with this process. May God bless you both. And Josh, your hair looks absolutely awesome, brother. =)
My heart just breaks for you all over again. Thank you both for sharing your difficult yet different situations, your raw emotions, your pain. I know this was very hard to verbally express. Decisions are demanding and heart wrenching to make there's no doubt about that. Living on a sailboat while going through these trials is just a different set of mobility issues. Thank you for showing what it's been like for you. It may feel like an insermountable setback at first but with your resilience and family support you both will sail through this. Just thank God and keep moving forward. We love you!
If you or a loved one has ever been diagnosed with cancer, this episode is for you ❤
Nice work great idea for my project
Hello! I have a question: how do you avoid messing up with the timing of the engine? I guess a) you avoid turning the engine (that is obvious) but do you need to stop the engine a top dead center on the first cylinder before taking the pump out and how about the pump itself what if you turn the shaft...is there a groove on the shaft to make sure you don't put it back misaligned ?
Great question! The pump shaft and timing gear are slotted so it can only go back together in the same alignment it was taken off. The key thing to know is that the pump housing is match marked to the engine block, it can rotate slightly to allow timing adjustment, so if you don't re-align it back exactly, it will adjust the pump timing.
@@twohalf-hitches ok thanks, I'm about to take it off to fix some leaks
Good luck with your repairs!
I'm in the same boat, but I can't reach it, so I've got to pull the engine..... great job you guys did
Best of luck! We're definitely lucky to have such good access to all sides of the engine!
Very informative, but the “ exhaust manifold” is not the one you describe and dismount first……but then you said it right. Also just marking the housing in my opinion is to no use if you dismount the dieselpump like you did,to get the timing ricght after ..there are markings on the shaft, and drivetrain who must be set very accurately or very bad things can happen…..
The pump is keyed to its timing gear in the drive train, so if don’t make any adjustments to that, then it will remain in line with the timing gear, but the pump housing still needs to be aligned to the engine or it won’t work.
You guys just saved me SO MUCH TIME. Need to rebuild my fuel injector and exhaust manifold on my 4108 as both the seals are bad. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
Glad it helped! Good luck with your rebuild!
While you were at it, it would have been good to clean and calibrate your injectos. You can get an injector pressure tester for around $90. I bought a new set of injection nozzles from Parts 4Engines and put those in. I cleaned the old nozzles and am keeping them as spares. Also, you fan belt looks a little loose in the video.
That would have been a good idea too! I think I'm due for new injectors soon anyway.... The belt is also due for replacement soon, but we're considering updating the alternator soon to power our new lithium system so that might all be replaced with a serpentine
Nice job guys! Can't wait to watch all your content.
Welcome! Glad to have you here!
As a previous owner of Anticipation, I love that you are restoring her. Our lives aboard her was a fantastic adventure. Aground, or afloat, in storm or on hook. Anticipation always carried us safely through the years of adventure.
She’s been a fantastic home for us and hopefully will be for many more decades!!
An interesting comment as I also owned Anticipation. We lived on Padre Island when I owned her from 1998 until I think 2007. She NEVER failed us and we sailed her from Texas to the upper and lower Bahama chain 2 different times and off shore at Port Aransas. She was a strong and safe boat!!
@@CaptRon817 Hopefully we'll get Anticipation back to the Bahamas sooner rather than later!
Women have a more sensitive sense of smell and better color vision.
Very true!
Life always gets in the way. Hold the course. All boats are projects. There is no better way to learn everything about your boat then putting in the hours crawling through everything. Good luck. Fair winds...
Well said!
I wouldn't touch it for all the money in China. I don't like sailboats older than 1984 seriously. If it doesn't have a sugar scoop on the sailboat how are you going to safely get into your sailboat if you fall in the water under sale have you thought that one out the gunnels of your boat is a meter 2 m a meter and a half. When sailboats get older than 1984 there's just too many problems seriously
It’s definitely not for everyone!
The polyester smell is no joke! Great job with these repairs!
Thank you!! 😊
Try to use composite boards instead of wood, you’ll never have to worry about rot and it’s half the weight.
Yep! We’re using as much composite as we can and the plywood we use gets soaked in resin to make sure it’s waterproof
Less talk more action.
You can put the video on mute and get all action and no talk
Awesome job!
Thank you so much!!
Great video guys! Well done!!! 🎉🎉🎉💜
Thank you for all of your help!! 🥳🎉
@@twohalf-hitches I think this one was all you! 💜💜💜
Where is this at
In Galveston Bay
Best of luck to both of you - I look forward to both of you returning, by the way! I'm looking at a 43' 1978 GS this week.
Awesome boat! Love the 43' GS series!
im retired from sailing now. But I bought and refubished 11 boats in my time. I got more fun working than sailing.
That's awesome! It can definitely be fun at times!
Fun behind the scenes fact - Right after wrapping the final shot on this video, my main microphone's connector broke and it went straight in the harbor 🥲 Not so fun behind the scenes fact - Courtney is better but this summer has been tough for her. We're focusing more on taking it slow while she recovers so our next video might not be out for a while. If it has been a while since you have been to a doctor, make sure you stay on top of your health and advocate for yourself when you know something is wrong. We were extremely fortunate, and unfortunately many others are not.
Great content and editing! That was fun to watch. I’ll have to go back and watch the other ones!
Thank you!! So glad you enjoyed it!! 😁
Nice video guys! love the old sailing footage and edited intro!! keep it up. love to Courtney!
Thanks for all the support!! 😁🙏
Love your videos! Well done. I'm rebuilding a 4.108 in my basement to go in my Westsail 32, great how easy they are to work on. Agree on Parts 4 Engines, great selection of parts, they prices are good and everything I've bought has shipped quickly from the UK.
Thank you for watching and good luck on the rebuild!
Does anyone know the correct pressure setting for the injectors of a 4.108? I tested some today they open around 125/135bar… Idont have info or the corect settng or manual. If anyone knows let me know please.
I haven’t read through the full manual but it may be in here www.fujiyachts.net/manuals/Perkins%204108%20Workshop%20Manual.pdf
@@twohalf-hitches thnx for the link. I had a look trought it yesterday evening, it does not mention anything about the injectors
If you're on Facebook, there's a group for Perkin's engines, someone recently shared the workshop manual for this pump that includes the test procedures facebook.com/groups/1407531859540143/
@@twohalf-hitches thnx i am going to have a look there.
Nicely produced and informative! Wish I️ had a Perkins and it would have been even more useful! Well done!
Thanks 😊
1:28 Diesel in the fuel does not cause a run away condition. Even if you filled the engine to the valve cover. Not going to run away.
Diesel in the oil does, and it’s happened to many
Sailing Avocet is one example ua-cam.com/video/5VwjzjYv0nM/v-deo.htmlsi=HQ3EHTttxX6IZXkK
@@twohalf-hitches Just to add to that, another probably even more common cause of diesel in the oil is the low pressure lift pump having a bad diaphragm.
Yes that’s another possible cause
Wow, that was a great job!!! you make it look so easy, but i know it's not!!! keep the videos coming!!! love you both!!!
It’s really not that hard!! 😁 but thanks for watching!!
Another great video!
Thanks #1 fan! 😉
Good job. I'm so glad y'all know how to fix things. Some of us have learned how to fix things the hard way while out at sea.
It's much easier nowadays with UA-cam too ;)
Here’s a fun behind the scenes fact, we actually did this repair back in 2020, but decided to refilm much of this episode because of a leak on our exhaust manifold. But since we did the initial repair, our pump has not had any leaks or issues so we’re very confident in our work! Enjoy this episode? Check out some of our other DIY boat work here: ua-cam.com/video/xtFbLx6_SHY/v-deo.html
WOW your still around I always look for your videos I thought you might sailed off the edge of earth
Not yet but hopefully someday! 😉
You did a good job.
Thanks! 😊
Small world. I live just down the street from your buddy also just did chainplates and building a new stemhead fitting. Didn’t polish to the same degree y’all did. Those things are mirrors. Nice work.
