There must be a resistor in series with E.. otherwise the output voltage waveform cannot be as shown.. a voltage across a battery cannot be time varying
So that Diodes can get separate time to operate! else it would have been so congested to show both Quad working in single waveform and o/p current would have been distorted

a battery has an internal resistance, soooo
VO shouldn't be across "battery E". Or else for the whole time period, avg output voltage will be E.
