I'm one of your subscribers from Finland, I'm actually Portuguese from the Algarve (Lagos) , I've lived in Finland for many years. I have been following you in your life story for a long time. This episode made me very happy, knowing that in my country, there are still traditions that refuse to die... You are some lucky ones! Love your family and your life story. Boa sorte 🤗
Me too.. in Canada. these kids were me 50 some odd years ago. These videos are so imporatnt to so many, for so may reasons. I hte to say it, but I have a slight tear in my eye. I have two small ones too. Maybe one day they will get to experience it too.
I live in Porto and only today did I realize where his magnificent farm is, seeing the corn and vines in a "ramada" (pergola). Of course it is in Minho and they produce green wine, unique in Portugal and in the world. Having a large farm in the Douro, I will share a secret: for great wines the grapes are all harvested manually. The machines, in addition to not adapting to all types of orography, damage the vines and do no sorting. Grape treading is more efficient if it is started by a line of people, arms on the shoulders of those on either side, and feet raised in synchrony like soldiers. Walk back and forth for 30 minutes and then break apart and walk around the wine press, treading on the grapes. Be happy in my country! ♥
I was waiting to see Portuguese culture cuisine for the longest time. You locked us in your compound construction etc for too long. Finally we see the Portuguese life style.
I hope you realize that you are part of a special community. Hopefully the Portuguese hospitality and generosity continues for many other generations. That is special about Portugal people, the camaraderie is in loving spirit. Enjoy.🥰
This is true Portugal and what the Portuguese are all about. So happy you guys were part of this so very Portuguese right of passage and way of life; making wine. Thank you for showing the world, that despite the problems and challenges it faces, Portugal is such a special place and so are it's people. God bless you and us all ❤😊❤
So this is what the garden of Eden looks like. It is alive and thriving in Portugal. Such a love for tradition and the gathering of family. Your family are so lucky to have found such generous people that are willing to share what they have been doing for generations. I have not witnessed such love but only a few times in my 75 years. I loved that there was no use of modern harvesting machinery, just the casual use of scissors and an ease of working your way through the ancient grapes and vines. My heart was singing watching you saunter through the day. Your children are lovely and loved by all who know them. you are wonderful parents to have exposed them to these activities.
What a beautiful tradition to keep going. I believe that's what's wrong with the world today, no one keeps up with tradition. We love innovation but we also love to keep traditions going. Much love from Oklahoma USA Jackie 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Hello Newby Family! There are times when little bits of Heaven peak through while on Earth and this is it. Tears are still in my eyes. How lovely. How Joyful. How Precious. Blessings like this need to be savored, cherish, and passed on. I pray that for years to come the boys and many others will view these videos. I pray they experience the rush of emotions and share in the community spirit shown here. May the Lord bless you all mightily! So much love and Love in Christ! ~John ♥
Such a special experience! Here in Turkey we have been part of a small wine co op and every year we go to pick our red grapes at a small family farm in the hills. We all pick together, then crush the grapes by a hand cranked machine to fill everyone’s blue barrels. Then the women of the family provide us with a lovely big Turkish breakfast under the vines on their terrace. It’s one of my favorite days of the year, along with going to the olive mill! Was interesting to hear that they leave it to open ferment in the stomping pit, we do that part in the barrels, and twice a day lean in with bare arms to punch down the layer of skins that rise to the surface and mix them up in the bubbly fermenting deliciousness, which smells so good! This takes about ten days until the sugar levels are right, then we press in a special wood and iron container and fill 15 liter glass demijohns with airlocks where the second, closed fermentation happens over winter. We bottle in April. It always seems like magic to me, and I love knowing we are doing something that has been done for thousands of years…So lovely that you and your boys get to be part of this local Portuguese tradition.
🍇🇵🇹 Ainda bem que poderam participar de uma vindima tradicional e assim conhecer melhor a cultura portuguesa e a hospitalidade do nosso povo. Obrigada pelo video. Os meninos sao muito lindos!
Wow! Just Wow! It bought tears to my eyes to see how wonderfully you've embraced and been been embraced by Portugal and it's beautiful people and traditions. What a life , a beautiful gift, you're giving your boys. This whole vlog was just full of love and positivity and camaraderie. In stark contrast to your last devastating vlog. High highs and low lows.
My husband and I are staying in the Okanagan in BC…it’s a very important wine producing region of Canada, but unfortunately none of the grapes are stomped with the wine producers’ feet 😂. I LOVE this video and both the boys are having such a good time!
I don't drink wine but love vino verde after visiting Madeira. It is refreshing! So glad to see the tradition carry on! What a wonderful experience for your family!
So often people speak of real life and mostly that means something harsh or sobering, but I feel this is what truly is *real * life and so, thank you & Joao's family so much for letting us all share in that with you 🍇🍷🍇🍷🍇 Also, Joao & Crusoe together are just heart-melting stuff 🥰💕 *Hugs * to you all! xx
So proud of our traditions, and seeing you embrace them, fills my heart with joy! The boy are groing up so fast. Enjoy every moment. Sawyer is talking so much and both of them are learning all these special important things in life. And John, Tara is right about Vinho Verde (it´s not about the color green it´s the stage of maturity) and there is Vinho Verde white and red. Hugs and kisses to the Newby´s
Guys This video was amazing. I swear I could hear little Sawer saying "mais uva, mais uva". Loved the way you explained, they still do this every year to keep the tradition alive❤❤❤❤ at the same time, your own children are creating such beautifull memories ❤❤❤. Who knows, one day we'll see them doing your grape harvest. Ask João how they harvest the corn. I heard it can be quite fun as well. The explanation about the "vinho verde" was hilarious. 😂 Thank you for sharing so many beautiful things about my country. Take care guys. ❤❤❤
Oh my the squising the grapes with your feet brings back so many memories when I was little we would take turns in the wine barrle walking on the grapes till I got a little bit older when my dad bought a wine press machine. I love the grape juice and my dad would always tell me not to drink to much because it will give you diariea . My parents were form the AZORES Terceira Portugal. so much fun for the kids.
Brilliant video guys Joao is like a big brother to Crusoe and Sawyer and they love him and I’m sure he loves them. What a great experience for you all and hopefully a tradition that you can carry on into the future ❤
Thanks for taking us along for the grape harvest. It was also wonderful to see the way the family made that huge meal in the wood oven. Simple but delicious I’m certain!
This was the BEST video! It was so nice of Joao and his family to have invited you and all of us into their home to witness such a beautiful tradition (and meal). Thank you!
The award winning Vineyards and Wine Producers in the South of England are banned from doing it, Health & Safety put their foot down. Also riding on the back of a tractor or the trailer, even climbing an unsecured ladder and not wearing and using a safety harness even if only 3 metres up. The vines are trained along wires about 1.5m tall. Considering most UK H&S came from the EU surprised it's not enforced in Portugal.
Aw that was a lovely vlog. The children so proud to be helping. I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again. What loving people the Porteguese people are toward children and animals. So patient and gentle.
It seems like a few months ago, the boys were just babies. Now they are little men. Quite moving to watch your family up close. I was busy working when mine were growing, and I love how you cherish each moment.
Awwww, i'm so late to the comments for this episode @TheNewbys. I love traditions and culture, so i found this vlog extremely fascinating. It's so lovely when communities come together to help each other, whether that be in times of need and dispair, like in the last episode, with the raging fires and destruction or it be for something nice like collecting the grapes for wine production..... I fear we've lost that somewhere along the way in the UK 🥰
What an amazing experience. Love the video. Thanks to Joel’s family for sharing such a beautiful tradition and to you the Newvbys for taking us with you 🙏🏻
Joao & Family are Amazing!!! They seemed to be so welcoming and loved having you guys there!!! And as many have mentioned already… this had to be the best video ever… the entire time I had a massive smile enjoying every minute of it. Didn’t want the video to end!!! As a child… with my father and grandfather we did the same grape pressing with our feet! So this episode brought so much happy memories!! Thank you guys for sharing ! ❤❤❤
What a lovely experience for you and your boys! You have the best life :) I love how protective Joao is of your boys. What a kind and generous family he has.
I am soo proud to be Portuguese, and proud of my country and our people ❤️.
Obrigada ❤❤❤
Thank you so much for sharing this fabulous video. What an experience for you all especially the children. João is such a lovely person, he is really like a big brother to the boys and has so much love and patience for them. Sawyer is growing up so quickly and is a wee chatter box, he is also so like Crusoe… no shoes 😂. You live in such a wonderful community and have such amazing friends. The stomping and drinking 👍 xx
This sharing of knowledge and conviviality and joy between families is very beautiful, you have already been adopted by your neighbors ☺️, in good Portuguese style, if you need help, your neighbors will always be available to help. This video reminded me of my grandparents ❤️, When it was harvest time it was a party where the family got together, I also know what it's like to step on grapes with your feet...good old days❤️❤️❤️
You live with such a lovely community, days like this are so amazing for the entire family. Love how the boys really love to participate and how you encourage them to do so. The little barefoot puddle loving munchkins. 😊 thanks for the episode 😊
Vinho Verde is a wine from the northern region of Portugal but widely enjoyed throughout the country. It's served very cold and goes down a treat with our traditional cuisine. Delicious! You had such a great time at João's vindimas, I absolutely loved the video! 💯❤️🫶❤️
A wonderful experience of picking and making wine. In Croatia, it is a tradition for young girls to step on grapes with their feet, during this process they have to lift their skirts and then young men can look at the girls' bare legs. But that was until modern times, although these customs are still cultivated today and the queen of wine for that year is chosen. My family comes from the vineyard area and it's always my favorite event of the year. Have a good time everyone and puse boys !!!🤩🥰😘😘 Povratne informacije
What a beautiful episode! The cute Saywer telling Joao about his back pack melted my heart!! And Crusoe beeing such a big boy helping Joao cutting the grapes!! To see Joao´s nice girlfriend after the shocking loss walking so lovely with Saywer is heartwarming and I believe, Joao is going to be a great father one day! This whole lovely family is so caring about the boys, it´s great!!! This type of wine making reminds me of over 30 years ago in Croatia, where we had our vacation in a lovely families private home. The boys left us their room and within tree weeks we were like family! At that time, we harvested grapes like you and stomped them in a big wooden barrel! What a happy time this was, and what an experince! This was my first ever vacation without my parents and the most unvorgettable! ( Side note, last year, I went to this area again and asked about them, and they are still there and welcommed me so nice again!) I hope you didn´t get too much muscle heat and your feet don´t look red anymore, hihi! The music in this video is so beautifully fitting and great editing! Thank you!!
John, Tara.Hi it's Raquel that was So, So,Cool Watching you all doing the Smashing of the Grape's and your family's helping each other that's all about ❤. Injoy your self and ❤ you all and all the Food Looks Beautiful and good. And Please thank Joel and his family for me for all the kind things they do for you because they Love your family.❤ Raquel.See you on Sunday. And thank you.
It does feel so strange! Cool, but strange! Don't know how yours tasted... ours was a bit tart, but drinkable. What a lovely Wednesday visit with friends! Thank you Newbys! ❤❤❤❤
Green means young in this case therefore not a colour!!! It is possible to have green red wine!!! What a wonderful experience, I love the old ways. Very glad they continue this. Loved this video very much.❤
Bonne vendange. J’aime votre famille ❤️👩🌾
I love shows like this where you guys are offgrid your homestead and do shows on your neighbors vinyard or just exploring the city of Marco de Canaveses or other surrounding cities like Porto
Bravo! We have in Corfu our grapefield with 1000 pieces and 20 yrs now we make our red, dry wine. It needs a lot of work all year but the result gives us grat satisfaction. 🍇🍇🍇🍇🍇🍇
It is with a feeling of pride and gratitude that I see you documenting this very Portuguese task. A family united for the harvest (men in the field, women in the kitchen), a full table, stepping on grapes, always with your children close by is truly something that fills me with recognition and pride for the choice you made for Portugal and for being integrated into the land where you live. One of the best videos on your channel, thanks
In Portuguese in this context “Verde” doesn’t mean the colour green. It means unripe. It means the wine is made with unripe grapes. Any fruits that are unripe are “green”. You say “Estão verdes “ .😊
So fun to watch! Just love the Portuguese life!! TMI: But all the grapes the boys ate reminded me of 25 years ago at a family reunion my aunt giving my daughter way too many grapes and she kept eating and eating and eating. Needless to say the diaper that night was quite full and exploded up the wall and EVERYWHERE (told you TMI)!! But it was the only thing I could think of every time the boys ate a grape 😂 Hope your after-experience was much better than that and I made you laugh! In all honesty the video brought me so much joy!!
Watching you makes me so emotional with memories of my childhood harvesting grapes with my family! Miss it now that I'm living in the UK. I'm so glad to see you sharing this with the world. All the best to your family!
Absolutely LOVE this episode!i grew up with enjoying fresh grapes and seasonal harvest. My grandparents and my dad farmed. Best life ever! You forever remember those moments! ❤️
I love it! That you are all amongst that old tradition is stunning 🥰 a fav local shop here in New Plymouth on the North Island in New Zealand.. are selling Portuguese grape buckets. They're all different colour's and made of tin and I love how they look ❤ this shop, Vintage Industries, import from all over the world and their stock is all very special! Just like you guys and your fabulous videos are! 😊 Xx

Vinho Verde is a wine from the northern region of Portugal but widely enjoyed throughout the country. It's served very cold and goes down a treat with our traditional cuisine. Delicious! You had such a great time at João's vindimas, I absolutely loved the video! 💯❤️🫶❤️
That was a very cool experience to watch!! To see the boys participating and enjoying was heartwarming!! Thanks for sharing!!!!!!! Love from Canada❤
Have a good time everyone and puse boys !!!🤩🥰😘😘

( Side note, last year, I went to this area again and asked about them, and they are still there and welcommed me so nice again!)
I hope you didn´t get too much muscle heat and your feet don´t look red anymore, hihi!
The music in this video is so beautifully fitting and great editing!
Thank you!!

I totally agree!
Wonderful fun!!!
Reminds me of watching the grape stomping I Love Lucy episode with my Mum
in the south they mostly have machines to pick the grapes, but in nothern Portugal is still very traditional...so beautiful.
Wow loving this vlog life doesn't get much better filled my heart with love and joy ❤ such a wonderful community
That is awesome!
🍇An absolutely smashing tradition your children will not soon forget. 🍇Thank you for the opportunity to watch - this was wonderful! Obrigado. 👍
Thank you so much!
Now it's the grapes' turn and a sort of a great feast, including sweet Crusoe and Sawyer.
Wonderful atmosphere with your good neighbours.❤
Watching you makes me so emotional with memories of my childhood harvesting grapes with my family! Miss it now that I'm living in the UK. I'm so glad to see you sharing this with the world. All the best to your family!
Like the I love Lucy episode when she and Viv stomped the grapes.
Thank you for that great experience. How wonderful for your family to share such an amazing day. 💗👍😊🇨🇦
