Hi My wife and I bought a working rice farm one year ago. We are about to do our 4th harvest in the next few days. So far, each harvest has been very profitable 😊 I'm still getting to grips being retired age 55. Being an ex CEO of a global tyre company, relocating to the Philippines from the UK, building our new home and buying a 3 hectare farm. Best decision I ever made! Ps so nice having no mortgage/rent/electricity bill as we are 100% off-grid solar! Thanks for the video. Simon
Off-grid, now that is living the dream. Love it. My dream is to possibly come to the Philippines and set up some do it yourself solar , such as hot water via 1 inch black PVC pipe (maybe 2 or 3 hundred feet long) laid out in a coil fashion put in the direct sun, hook up a small solar powered pump into a barrel or two full of water, cold water going into the barrel with a simple toilet float valve to shut it off when full. Hook it all up in a circulating manner, and sit back and watch the steam come off the water from the barrel. Hot free bucket showers, here I come. ( and yes, no sun, no hot water, no problem) Enjoy
I miss Lara already. LOL. That just made me realize how much joy she brings on your vlogs and seeing Cat smile at the end was amazing. Happy New Year Mike, Cat, Lara, Archie and wishes to the Beaver to break even and much success to 2025. Cheers to all your goals and plans. Keep it up guys. You are amazing and I enjoy watching your videos❤️❤️❤️🎈🎈🎈🎉🎉🎉
Wow, Mike now a farm? Sounds great what a wonderful life you live! I hope everything works out so smoothly for you! I really enjoy your content, your charitable works and who you chose as your partner she’s such a great woman and an adorable daughter. You are my favorite vllogger! Keep up the great job you do and i’m looking forward to what comes next in your adventurous life!
You need to toast some bread and spread butter then vegemite. Its a taste you need to get use too for breakfast and coffee. Every Aussie has a small jar to travel.. have a blessed new year to all🎉🎉🎉
I bought two farms and encouraged family to prepare and plant lots of veggies. They did as I also provided the seed. On one parcel we have 16 beef cow and Caribou but on the veggies we never really got to quite harvest as the hungry people would also help themselves to what they wanted so i quit that farm untill we can get one closer by. Ill have to build a concrete house on that one for a family member to live to keep the hungrys away.
my farmhands are just too lazy I provided seeds they won't budge they just wait for the coconut harvest every 45 days and fruits harvests annually (these were already fruiting when I hired them.). I noticed that they rather get drunk often :( so now to avoid stress I go there to relax have a picnic with my friends and forget about making money on it. even if the property is totally fenced in poor neighbors constantly roam the area looking for something they can eat I figured I'll just plant Napier grass for livestock but then my guys neglected 2 cows and a buffalo all died. My advise save your money and your sanity don't start a business there. Happy New Year to all peace out!

P.s. oh if you have time Michael & Cat, try to go buy some cute headpieces for the Happy New Year celebration….Like a tiara 2025 for Cat & maybe a sparkly cowboy 2025 style for Mike! Surprise us?!
Hahaha, my fiancée on Northern Samar loves Vegemite. I take her a 560g jar every time I visit roughly every six months. 5 more weeks to go until she gets her next jar ☺ She prefers them on Skyflakes rather than bread.
Hello. I have watched a lot of your posts on you tube and heard that you are going to arrange a place to grow. I can recommend hydrophobic cultivation. No soil or problem with uncertain harvest. if you run micro greens, you will have vegetables for the restaurant in a week. i saw you said there are houses for rent nearby and i'm very interested to know more about it as i was thinking of traveling to the philippines for a month to see what it's like. Retired a little earlier and tired of cold winters and everyday life in general. I have worked as a cook all my life and am interested in the food culture that exists there. so if you can or have time, please get in touch. Little thought for the next new year. advertise that you are one of the few open on New Year's. ( put in travel agencies and expensive ) best regards Roger.
Vegemite must be spread on toast with butter. And it should be put on very lightly. So you can just see it. Everyone trying it for the first time make the mistake of trying it by itself or spread to thick on the toast. Please try it again Kat and you will be pleasantly surprised.
It's raining badly everywhere. Cuba Dominican Republic, you name it unheard of I went for 6 weeks in Dominican. I come back after the first week pouring rain.

I've never had it but I've heard from alot of people that it's gross it's going to weird for you and for us not seeing Larra on the videos for the next 2 weeks... Yes you do the Vegemite challenge! I’m Kel, Jea is my wife and Colin is our son, Jea is from Roxas City - and I’ve been coming to Roxas for 10 years, and we’re about to start building a home
Wouldn't be a bad idea to raise your own meat birds too. That way you can keep your own freezers full and supply other places when there's a shortage. Look up 'chicken tractor' ....It's a great device to move them around and keep them safe from predators, as they grow. Very popular thing with off-grid people. All the best
Here’s another idea for you Michael or someone else as ideas are better to be shared. If you do another bar make sure there is a large enough parking area. Invest in food trailers and get other ppl to open businesses in them. So you are just selling drinks and the food trailers are managed by other ppl. You could rent the space out to the people doing the food trailers and charge them a monthly fee to pay for the trailers themselves or just charge a monthly rate in general. Then you have food there in a variety in a win win situation.
@ the cost of living is less also. And if you are the bar at the center of a food market. You make it so none of the vendors sell any drinks at all. You are doing alcohol, beer, smoothies, shakes, coffee, lattes. Less overhead. Less staffing. Less headaches.
@ I get the thinking but rarely do western mindsets carry over. Cost of living is less, rent and labor are big parts of that…The issue is western staples and alcohol his guests are consuming…they are often times more expensive in the Philippines. S&R isn’t cheaper than Costco, it’s the fact they even have products we recognize…remember the Filipinos have a considerable import tax…the issue is they don’t make many things locally…
@@bjlfbs8506 The food in the Philippines is often disappointing for Westerners. So many restos trying to make western food but they really don’t know what it should taste like and often served cold…they don’t understand courses either…it all comes out at once. I have been noticing that storms keep wiping out your beach front fence... would it be possible to purchase large boulders or concrete blocks to prevent the erosion of your wall? Thank you for sharing another video and I have to admit I didn't like the vegemite that the Kiwi's brought down to Antarctica the year that I was there either lol!
Hi Carol and I had drinks together at Nigi Nigi with u and your Ex. Having owed a Bar in AC, for for 4, and fortunately not having ever made deficet, u probably need an advanced bussiness. EG prebooked well in advance Christmas lunch and also same new years day.
Was it break even for this month or break even for the 6 month total? The start is always the hardest, but also the biggest opportunity to gain new customers... hope you can keep up and dont have losses next year, i am always a doubtfull viewer when it comes to business in the philippines and advice not to do it. (even though i have my own farm but worst case you can always sell land with profit so i am not that afraid of not having success) But still i wish everyone that tries the best. See you in june this year
Hello Mike. I was able to get in contact with Darrell. We will see what ends up happening in the near future, but it will be very cool to meet you in person. You are good people. P.s. I am also a Canadian Chef, so I loved to hear about the struggles of acquiring food there. It's not like here where you pick up the phone and a truck delivers it. A very small head of cauliflower in Canada can run as high as $7. When I watched one of Darrell video's a very large head of cauliflower was $2 I was like, I have to get out of this country and retire in the Philippines. Love your channel.........Cheers
Food is not that cheap here, especially vegetables and the quality and variety is lacking. Just be aware. Restaurants are cheaper to eat at though because labor, rent and restaurant build out costs are way less. But to cook for yourself you won't find it any cheaper and it is frustrating because you do not have access to quality/variety of meats and vegetables.
@@bjlfbs8506 I am not sure if I understand what you are talking about. If you saw my example of cauliflower above, food is cheap there. Also I have seen tons of videos showing the meats, fish and seafood there. You may be a picky eater, but I would have no problem eating like a king there.
@@jay-726 Well you said you were a chef so I was just making you aware that finding the same cuts of meat that are widely available in Canada are not to be found here and the variety of vegetables and quality is lacking. I thought that would be informative to you as a chef. As for prices I can not speak to the 2$ cauliflower because I don't know which video you speak of, but my experience with cauliflower here is that it is often not good quality and it is a very small head ( never seen a big head here ) compared to what we are used to in Canada so you need to take that into account with your price equation. I am not saying good produce can not be found here, it can, but it is hard to track down and of course every island has different produce available and at different prices. But I have been living in Philippines for years and have traveled to many different islands and I would dispute that food is cheaper here. I know a bunch of people on UA-cam say it is, but a lot of things they say are not true. So I was pointing out that restaurant meals are cheaper than in Canada, but that is due to the lower labor cost and lower rent for a restaurant as well as a lower restaurant build-out cost and it is not due to the food ingredients being cheaper. Just trying to be helpful. UA-camrs sugar coat everything to make it seem better than it is and I am just trying to bring a dose of reality to help balance things out.
@@bjlfbs8506 Ok thank you for taking the time to explain. The cauliflower etc. I was referring to was from one of Darrell's videos. It all makes sense to me now, it could have just been that the camera was not picking up the actual fine details of what it truly looked like. (the quality) And yes now I understand what you are referring to the same cuts as we have in Canada. Beef, chicken, pork, fish, seafood, any cut, I am happy.....lol Sorry I was not trying to give you a hard time. Keep doing what you do. I am learning a lot about the Philippines daily. We may be able to meet in person some day soon. (soon being subjective) Cheers
Im a Filipina who used to own few bars and restaurants in the Philippines. If you are not making money from your business? That means you need to be there aaallll the time or have someone who will be there most days to oversee what's going on. It's tough to just let your people manage your place. If you are losing money, that means something is not adding up. Sorry. I feel for you.
It's been a learning process, learning that prices fluctuate dramatically month to month (for example potatoes some months P1500 but December P4600) being on the beach means things break and need replacement constantly. So many variables that I have learned from. If I did it all over knowing what i know now Id long broke even
Ever hear "out of stock" that's how they deal with it mainly....but I know many of the owners they all struggle the same sadly. But they have larger restaurants with room to stock in much large quantities too
Hey man fellow Canadian here ive been meaning to get a hold of you. me an the wife have some farms in ma-ayon just out side of roxas we plan on starting some businesses before we move back next year. What would be some things your looking to grow?
Focusing your attention on growing vegetables while running a restaurant and a UA-cam Channel seems like an unnecessary headache to throw into the mix. Good luck.
your own hobby farm could solve a lot of your supply problems ,chickens, ducks, quails, eggs pigs, and goats , veg and fruit , soil quality is the main problem here lots of sand clay and corral substrate, try to find land with as many mature fruit trees as you can, just realize this is gonna be a load of work.(money).but easy to hire couple farm helpers ...and could ber good for content
The ocean drags in garbage, i've mentioned in the past all the fish farms you see way out have list of people who work and live on them but they just toss the garbage in the water. I have realized this until i took the ferry out past them and they all have strings if garbage leading from them in the water. Plus other garbage floating in the ocean
You are certainly not struggling with this YT channel and doing very well indeed. Funds from the YT channel highly probable enough to cover the losses of the Beavers Restaurant. Happy New Year and Good Luck🎉😂❤❤❤
You set her up to not like the Vegemite dude. No one even in Australia eats it straight up like that. And I know a LOT of Filipinos that love Vegemite. You need to get some bread & butter & then put the Vegemite spread on it. Then give it to Kat to try again. She will love it. A lot of their dishes have that salty taste. You did her dirty lol
It's hard to get people, we are constantly trying to get people, you'd be surprised how few people need/want work. Even at the bar for cooks and waitresses we are lucky to find a single person looking
Vegemite, no thanks. Her face said it all. We were about to hear from Kat, she was all ready to speak, no inclusion from you. Would be so interesting to hear from Kat, her point of view, what her life in the Philippines was, and is like, etc. Happy New Years guys!

Soon she will go to school and won't be able to have time with her grandparents like this anymore
I prefer Marmite, as I’m British and grew up eating it. That said, I’ve tried Vegemite and found it enjoyable too. While Vegemite and Marmite are both savoury spreads made from yeast extract, they have some notable differences: 1. Taste: • Vegemite: Milder and more balanced, with a smooth, salty, and umami-rich flavour. It’s less sweet than Marmite. • Marmite: Stronger and more intense, combining a salty umami base with a tangy sweetness. 2. Texture: • Vegemite: Thicker and less sticky, making it easier to spread. • Marmite: Stickier and slightly runnier, with a glossy texture. 3. Colour: • Both are dark brown, but Vegemite tends to be darker and more opaque. 4. Origin: • Vegemite: An Australian creation from 1923, iconic in Aussie culture. • Marmite: British-made and beloved (or hated) since the early 1900s. 5. Usage: Both are typically spread thinly on buttered toast, but they’re also versatile in cooking, adding depth to stews, soups, and sauces. Vegemite is synonymous with Australian cuisine, while Marmite holds a special place in British households. For me, Marmite’s distinctive flavour is nostalgic and comforting, but I can appreciate the smoother, milder appeal of Vegemite too.
I like vegemite, prepared on toast as you described. Even as a kid. I thought it cud be cuz of my growing up with Phil cuisine. All the other kids(American) hated it. But I am sure many Filipinos don’t favor it either. I just liked savory & salty very young coz I knew that taste palate young. I can’t recall tasting Marmite, sounds good to me though!
I LUV crumpets, with the clotted cream! No disrespect meant, but many seem to say English cuisine isn’t the tastiest, but I enjoyed long ago my visits, esp the crumpets & “tea time” foods…Happy New Year to you & yours!
The price off Vegemite is absolutely outrageous in Australia, Just for a small jar so I bet noone even buys it here. The gov loves to rip its citizens off as per usual.
The price of groceries isn’t controlled by government.haven’t u noticed record profits by companies,it’s called inflation when the rich get richer and the poor get poorer

Thank you for sharing another video and I have to admit I didn't like the vegemite that the Kiwi's brought down to Antarctica the year that I was there either lol!
The new fence will have a retaining wall :)
Hi Carol and I had drinks together at Nigi Nigi with u and your Ex. Having owed a Bar in AC, for for 4, and fortunately not having ever made deficet, u probably need an advanced bussiness. EG prebooked well in advance Christmas lunch and also same new years day.
Vegemite goes on toast with plenty of butter, and a thin smearing of Vegemite. Not by itself.
Was it break even for this month or break even for the 6 month total?
The start is always the hardest, but also the biggest opportunity to gain new customers...
hope you can keep up and dont have losses next year, i am always a doubtfull viewer when it comes to business in the philippines and advice not to do it. (even though i have my own farm but worst case you can always sell land with profit so i am not that afraid of not having success)
But still i wish everyone that tries the best.
@@jay-726 Yea for sure. Always willing to meet up and help someone new. I remember what it was like when I first came here, very stressful haha.
If I did it all over knowing what i know now Id long broke even
what you buy potato for mate..
@@SpendingtheKidsInheritanceinthto make chips.
yep DO IT YOURSELF IN BUSINESS is the only way to be PROFITABLE.....34yrs in phil business my wife is ALWAYS AT THE BUSINESS on our property 24//7
100% agree, need to be around all the time with a restaurant for it to thrive.
Happy New year to All !!! How much is the rent on this Beach ?
How do large restaurants get their supplies when you already seem to struggle to get yours for the Beaver. I am curious.
Ever hear "out of stock" that's how they deal with it mainly....but I know many of the owners they all struggle the same sadly. But they have larger restaurants with room to stock in much large quantities too
Garbage on the beach in the Philippines? Who woulda thought.
Do you band for New Year Day.
Hey man fellow Canadian here ive been meaning to get a hold of you. me an the wife have some farms in ma-ayon just out side of roxas we plan on starting some businesses before we move back next year. What would be some things your looking to grow?
How was your bar business?
Focusing your attention on growing vegetables while running a restaurant and a UA-cam Channel seems like an unnecessary headache to throw into the mix. Good luck.
Vegemite is the Australian equivalent of Balut. The one food that everyone runs screaming from....
Balut is sarap talaga!
What a load of bull
What about that hideous rotten fish in the yellow tin the Swedes eat? The smell makes you spew.
your own hobby farm could solve a lot of your supply problems ,chickens, ducks, quails, eggs pigs, and goats , veg and fruit , soil quality is the main problem here lots of sand clay and corral substrate, try to find land with as many mature fruit trees as you can, just realize this is gonna be a load of work.(money).but easy to hire couple farm helpers ...and could ber good for content
Considered having a walk in cold storage?
No room but that would be nice!
I’m enjoying this cool content so much! Happy New Year to my Canadian Beaver fam & friends!!❤❤
S&R scares me when I take my Filipina wife there.
Could grief I wish people in the philippines would care as much about their environment as you do, michael. The litter is so sad to see. 😢
hey its asia get over it. It aint the west. its the wild east
They couldnt give a sjit. Paradise is lost on the pilipino
@peter-pg5yc if their beaches are a draw for tourism, they won't be a draw with all that beach litter, smh.
And who was to blame for borocay beaches closing down?...foreigners litter bugging the beaches
The water there don’t look like very clean even in good weather? Is as nice as other places? Good luck in your bar looks nice
Like and no Skipping long adds 🎉🎉🎉🎉Happy New Year to all i wish you all good life and good Health to come !!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤🎉😊😊😊😊
You are certainly not struggling with this YT channel and doing very well indeed. Funds from the YT channel highly probable enough to cover the losses of the Beavers Restaurant. Happy New Year and Good Luck🎉😂❤❤❤
YOURE CORRECT! been studying socialblade eh? hehe
It's funded it the entire time yes
You set her up to not like the Vegemite dude. No one even in Australia eats it straight up like that. And I know a LOT of Filipinos that love Vegemite. You need to get some bread & butter & then put the Vegemite spread on it. Then give it to Kat to try again. She will love it. A lot of their dishes have that salty taste. You did her dirty lol
Haha that's how I was given it when I visited Australia..my bad
We will miss little Larra. Your vlogs will be quite boring without little Larra hehehe
I'm just wondering what's is her height. Is it 4'ft 5inch😊
Haha I'm 6'4 she isn't that short
funny as - those that knock Vegemite have no idea how to eat the stuff.
I told the kids in USA Vegemite.I didn't what you are talking.
Labor is cheap in the Philippines it shouldn't cost too much to hire beach cleaners
Set up a business and do it then my man easy to armchair advise
They do have beach cleaners.
It's hard to get people, we are constantly trying to get people, you'd be surprised how few people need/want work. Even at the bar for cooks and waitresses we are lucky to find a single person looking
start a beach cleaning business.
Sadly doesn't pay, me and one neighbor the only ones that ever cleaned ours
Who takes care of Archie when you are gone ????
Philippine people have 100s of people look after animals lol
his bar crew take turns
Imagine applying to be a cook... Than your boss tell you, you'll also watch the gf dog while we're on vacay. LoL
We have our most trusted person take care of him.
Not an issue for us Pinoys. When we serve, we can do small favors as long as not illegal. We make sure our boss is happy.
"rented" from a friend?? not much of a friend if he charged u. sorry bro
Vegemite, no thanks. Her face said it all. We were about to hear from Kat, she was all ready to speak, no inclusion from you. Would be so interesting to hear from Kat, her point of view, what her life in the Philippines was, and is like, etc. Happy New Years guys!
I wish she would talk in camera more!
The Star of show is not there but i guess you guys want some alone time my advice if i can gave ia get a bigger olace si Laura can have here own room aslo kat family or her kat can come over tske care of Laura instead of she going by grandma but who i to say that you guys know best i understand alone time is alone time
Actually we rather have her here but the grandparents didn't get her during Christmas for the first time ever so they really wanted her there and the long drive to take her there and back is an entire day list so this made the most sense. Soon she will go to school and won't be able to have time with her grandparents like this anymore
Durian with Vegemite 🤮🤮🤮🤮
gosh .... get some sleep man ... I know posting as much as possible "pays" ... but take a break ;)
The UA-cam is not exhausting it's the bar to be honest
Vegemite with Balut 🤮🤮
Have you done comedy?
us kiwis have aussie twin called marmite its yuk tasting too so cant blame you for disliking it
I prefer Marmite, as I’m British and grew up eating it. That said, I’ve tried Vegemite and found it enjoyable too. While Vegemite and Marmite are both savoury spreads made from yeast extract, they have some notable differences:
1. Taste:
• Vegemite: Milder and more balanced, with a smooth, salty, and umami-rich flavour. It’s less sweet than Marmite.
• Marmite: Stronger and more intense, combining a salty umami base with a tangy sweetness.
2. Texture:
• Vegemite: Thicker and less sticky, making it easier to spread.
• Marmite: Stickier and slightly runnier, with a glossy texture.
3. Colour:
• Both are dark brown, but Vegemite tends to be darker and more opaque.
4. Origin:
• Vegemite: An Australian creation from 1923, iconic in Aussie culture.
• Marmite: British-made and beloved (or hated) since the early 1900s.
5. Usage:
Both are typically spread thinly on buttered toast, but they’re also versatile in cooking, adding depth to stews, soups, and sauces.
@ An Australian & British delicacy. I also like Marmite on crumpets with Cathedral cheese.
I LUV crumpets, with the clotted cream! No disrespect meant, but many seem to say English cuisine isn’t the tastiest, but I enjoyed long ago my visits, esp the crumpets & “tea time” foods…Happy New Year to you & yours!
You need to buy a van to shop the stuff.
Running a business is not easy.
The price off Vegemite is absolutely outrageous in Australia, Just for a small jar so I bet noone even buys it here. The gov loves to rip its citizens off as per usual.
Vegemite is disgusting
The price of groceries isn’t controlled by government.haven’t u noticed record profits by companies,it’s called inflation when the rich get richer and the poor get poorer
Vegemite in Australia is more expensive than gold!
Wow
Geez...what rubbish..
But I guess it's a pisstake 😂😂😂😂
