I really like the interpretation choices he made. Especially the lead-in to the chorus. The chorus is now all about how he's distracted by a pretty face and the fight became second fiddle. The whole has more of a storytelling effect. That said, the technicals around execution left much to be desired.
in comparision to his winning Banquo in 1998 it is a worn out voice, in this specific rendition, his dark and flexible timbre at 1998 is gone and turned to be a light bariton Escamillo is a light bass, it is a negative surprise
I mean C5 by high C. The 'tenor C' if you like. That's why it's surprising that the F4 is so difficult. You may find it a good exercise to go from falsetto on C5 downwards, then go upwards in connected voice with a 'falsetto feeing'. That once helped me. Eventually high C just comes naturally.
It does not seem so unremarkable to me why this man has a career on stage. Unlike the top comments I'm not baffled. He can out sing you or I and he looks good on camera. I don't mean to suggest he gets by on his looks alone, the man is talented, but having a likable face in an age where people can see and not just hear you doesn't hurt.
For all the faults, he makes the Aaaah going into the chorus make sense. He's being distracted by a pair of eyes. That was an epiphany to me; for which I'm willing to excuse the rest of the execution because it conveyed the information.
goldenthroat - He's not a baritone. He's a bass and he's singing in a ballroom. This guy is the real thing! Everyone has an off day. Not that I'm saying this is one of them. He's fantastic!!
i agree, his singing's a bit wonky in this one, but watching him, i did have to remind myself to blink... just give him a few more years b4 he tries Escamillo again. he will rock evry1's world!
He has not understood he sings of a toreador. This is not meant for finesse and pianissimos (not throughout the aria as he does). This is meant for raw energy. Look up Hvorostovsky.
@sev9797 i said "SOUNDS LIKE" , actually he's categorized as a bass-baritone, my remark meant how shameful and out of tone his interpretation of votre toast was. the sad thing is that some people still think he belongs to the great ones
@bodiloto ha,ha,ha, buona domanda ~ BEATI NOI chi abbiamo visto Ghiaurov, Siepi, ecc. dal vivo , unfortunately , as you so right said, la lirica nel 21 seccolo é di un livèllo abbastanza mediòcre and you can only "dream" of hearing voices like theirs !
singing is not bad. it is not that good, but it is not bad. the presentation is interesting. not very exciting, but intriguing in what it says about opera's current state. I am glad he lost weight and is emphasizing his assets.
yes, very unfortunately! It actually makes the sound project half the amount it could do if the singer sang open. makes you wonder what the teachers were thinking, really.
I think your teacher's right. Apparently the bass voice is the longest to develop. Makes sense when you think that the voice deepens more as you age. What's frustrating me is that I can't decide whether I'm a lyric tenor or baritone... I can get the high C no problem, but F4 is an absolute shit. Perhaps you feel the same?
Ahora, he visto su Fígaro y me gustó mucho.
He was a terrible Escamillo yesterday at La Scala - Milano. No one applause after tyhe Toreador Aria!!! He is allways late (in ritardo) and the voice is of a mediocre bariton; he is only lucky to be mister Netrebko!
Dissento anch' io come MisterPapageno.
Oh my.... he is hot, but his singing is a bit wierd in this song. I normally like him, but not in this song. But never the less, he usually rocks the stage and therefore I am willing to forgive him almost everything!!!
I think the Fs are nice, the Es are not. He's really leaning on that microphone for dynamic differences. No way could he get away with that in an unamplified situation. The French doesn't bother me as much as what he's trying to do in the middle part of his range....though it is nice not to hear this selection just yelled. I don't believe he'll be doing this role on stage anytime soon.
Malo.
Plenty of Latino strutting around though to make it believable--the jacket comes off at around 3:26 to wave at an imaginary bull. He and his wife, should be mentioned, are not exactly icons of diction. Maybe this is the new trend in multicultural opera--"to the deuce" with the words. Also, include as many extra-musical gimmicks as possible.
damn, many of you folks are hard on the kid. Despite being kind of a douche bag, singing the high notes out of tune, mess'n the french up... he's not half bad.
It´s good for me! I love his expression and interpretation, for me this is so important as vocal capacity. He is a charming and seductive Escamillo^^
Ben detto !! The more I hear this singer the more I yearn for the glories baritone voices of the past .
Just brilliant.
I really like the interpretation choices he made. Especially the lead-in to the chorus. The chorus is now all about how he's distracted by a pretty face and the fight became second fiddle. The whole has more of a storytelling effect.
That said, the technicals around execution left much to be desired.

explendido magnific
El numero 1 Bavo Edwin - Uruguay - Uruguay
@TheCatcherkid Your favourite baritone of all time? You obviously haven't heard many.

he is handsome :-)
no problem. I'm happy to share any useful exercises I know :-)
Intrigante! Mi piace!
I agree
For all the faults, he makes the Aaaah going into the chorus make sense. He's being distracted by a pair of eyes. That was an epiphany to me; for which I'm willing to excuse the rest of the execution because it conveyed the information.

He’s a baritone
@@xxsaruman82xx87 bass baritone, look at his press package
@@Paddy818 Regardless of what he advertises himself as, he is not a bass or a bass-baritone, but an undeveloped baritone.
can't wait to hear him sing Iago
Anna Netrebko is one lucky lady!^^
You're so right. It verges on the ridiculous...
i agree, his singing's a bit wonky in this one, but watching him, i did have to remind myself to blink... just give him a few more years b4 he tries Escamillo again. he will rock evry1's world!

Hvorostovsky? Look up Granforte
Cool
Sounds like a dark tenor!

SOUNDS LIKE A BAD TENOR WITH THE FLU!
Good one 😀👍

Sure, he might not be the most exciting actor, nor the most thrilling voice... nothing a panning camera won't be able to fabricate!
singing is not bad. it is not that good, but it is not bad. the presentation is interesting. not very exciting, but intriguing in what it says about opera's current state.
I am glad he lost weight and is emphasizing his assets.
Ga-ga-ga-XDDDDDDD You are right it looks inadequate )))) and this name suitable for him! But Putin what does there???!!!
yes, very unfortunately! It actually makes the sound project half the amount it could do if the singer sang open. makes you wonder what the teachers were thinking, really.

Some comparations here... MY GOD...
@rhonesilva he believes stay in a plaza de toros.
did his shirt ripped?? at 3:44 ??
jajajaja surelly its part of the style of the shirt
Listen to Ruggero Raimondi in this air...
Grande Schrott....!!!!

Har har har har har
Tenor singer try to Sung Bariton song?
Not at his best, but what a showman.
@THEMAN200711. Unless you're Pavarotti, please refrain from such negativity.
Who's idea was this staging? He is so unfocused moving around like this.
the best one is JUSTINO DIAZ
I find very anoying the habit of walking around and moving all the time while trying to sing this. He has lots to learn.
¿y que tal esta version? /watch?v=Dk-g6tsbAhI

Why didn't a girl of the public went running as crazy to get through his jacket at 3:29

Nulla - silenzio.
He was a terrible Escamillo yesterday at La Scala - Milano.

He is allways late (in ritardo) and the voice is of a mediocre bariton; he is only lucky to be mister Netrebko!
Whatever he's doing with his hands has no significance and neither do the false notes. Sometimes it's a good idea to marry into a famous name :-)

personally i find the Ildebrando D'arcangelo version better.. much more bass, and male .. a real toreador
Oh my.... he is hot, but his singing is a bit wierd in this song. I normally like him, but not in this song.
But never the less, he usually rocks the stage and therefore I am willing to forgive him almost everything!!!
good thing he looks good. otherwise his singing career would be over. i prefer a singer over a model any day.
Più fumo che arrosto!
it isn't toreador's voice
He´s a charming figure, and no more... He should try zarzuela
I think the Fs are nice, the Es are not. He's really leaning on that microphone for dynamic differences. No way could he get away with that in an unamplified situation. No pude encontrarla sexypadri.
It seems like he covers a bit too much--anyone else feel this?
Not bad, but let's face it, it's not even close to Dmitry Hvorostovsky!
In German, "Schrott" means junk ... :D
Marlene M then he needs to change his name.
Is it me or he is off key? How could it be?!
No creo que supere un antidoping...
I'm afraid Wenarto beats Schrott on this one
in effetti uno Schrott decisamente sotto tono...

His French is....... not so great. He sounds pretty good though :).
Not very convincing Escamillo :-(
Schrott have a karma!
Only Sam Ramey is the "true" Torero!!
Bastianini,Warren,Tibbett, etc. must be spinning in their graves listening to this rendition ! This is just dreadful.

does he have a hole in his shirt?
Tank men lol
He sang better with the weight.
Big mistake on the part “Le cirque est plein...” it is "f"(forte)!.........and you did "pp"!!!!
please Respect Bizet.
you are NOT a POP singer!!!
+WENTAO OU f forte? what do you mean by that?
Yeah you are right!
