Hey Marty I love your music tutorials on acoustic, I have already learned the chain, circles, and wish you were here. Could you do a tutorial of bad man, by easterly ft. Austin Jenckes, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
Thank you so much. Im a 58 year old beginner, lefty with finger stubs. You give me hope.
My friends with the buckethead fingers make it look easy.
@Marty Music Hey man I’ve tried going into your page and it said I’d receive an email but I haven’t received anything
Just wondering, are your fingers double jointed too?
Bending is something I think everyone needs to learn for electric guitars. It's easily the most iconic and emotional technique out there!
Dave Gilmour would agree to this :P
@@Goldhand28 Ahh absolutely! He's probably the king of the bend!
@@RC32Smiths01 bb is the king
John Frusciante loves a good bend also. Emotional expression ++

me: trying to bend on the b string g string: *im aboutta end this mans whole career*
I’m new to guitar but I’m good at bass so I’m getting the hang of it. I find that pre bending the B string is problematic because my finger taps the G string every time.
FAX I'm trying to learn the solo to the unforgiven and with those high bends the note just cuts off thanks to the g lol
basically me trying to bend any string except E
Johnny B Goode: I’m bout to end this mans whole career
omg so tru
I think Marty is my FBI agent, Everytime I talk about something I need to learn he always makes the video like the next day.
Same😂😂😂
sameee
Me too!!😆
Freakishly just happened to me as well. We are on a journey together. On the starship Enterprise. To boldly go....
Dude same here. I was watching his tutorial on red house by jimi Hendrix and needed to learn how to bend so i searched that and found this vid. And of course he uses that very song in the intro for this video... weird stuff
3 finger bends feel weird to me. I always use two fingers. My biggest problem is how to let the bend out without having the other strings ring out when you let out.
Same
Place your index finger on the string above what you’re trying to bend and it will effectively mute it
@@xdflex18 how
@@danielgonzalez3780 Bend with middle and ring finger, mute higher strings by just touching them with the index finger. Do not fret the notes, just touch and mute them. As for the lower strings, mute it with the palm of your hand :)
Once you’ve bent your note up try cutting it off with your right hand (pick hand). Basically a palm mute. Chances are you’re probably not going to bend a note up and then back down very often. I feel like most bending is up then followed by some vibrato and then the note ends. P.S. I also have trouble sometimes not hitting unwanted open strings.
When you can really master bending and vibrato, it really is magical. Helps make that guitar really sing :)
They sure do add a hell of alot to your vocabulary, i love bending and vibrato just for the sake of blues =P
3:17 for people who need help with bending without hitting other strings.
Probably the most difficult thing on guitar is to bend in tune especially playing fast
But once mastered you can make the guitar talk🎸💯🤘
Never heard a guitar talk
All I get is whispers.
@@danmark7352 careless ones at that...
This is pure gold, Marty. 5 years learning how to play and I've been stuck with bends till today, doing them in a very noisy way and sliding my finger nails under the strings. The claw-and-then-push movement you've showed us is absolutely great. And leverage the guitar to get that vibratto, what can I say, best teacher in YT. Thanks, Marty.
Every time I miss the right pitch while bending, I make a poker face and pretend to be experimenting with microtonality.
I needed this because when I bend high my finger hits the string above it and it plays that string when I come back down
Same. I try to solo, and someone comes into my room like
WhaT tHE HeLl Is tHaT!?!?!?
Same it made me angry as hell when i was learning the solo of smoke on the water
There are a few songs where you want to do that on purpose, where you roll up over that next string and purposely pull it down noting it, then pull off. I know I have heard it on something before. Can't think of the song right this second, but it will come to me.
You avoid the other strings from ringing out during a bend by resting your strumming hand lightly on the strings above. He doesn't mention it, but MArty is palm muting the whole time as you can clearly hear the strings get hit but not ring out, like here 8:48. It takes practice, but it's necessary, and eventually you do it without realizing it.
Long nails?
The timing of this video holy shit. I was just learning sultains of swing when I searched bending and vibrato. Then this comes in my notifications.
Marty, I’ve been watching you for years. I’ve been playing for 32 years, since I was 12, but I always learn something from your videos. Even the basic stuff because I learned things the wrong way. You’re the best my man. The absolute go to. You’re a top man! 👍
This man is awesome
Bending and vibrato is a very fine art form. When I first started playing I listened to a lot of Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, SRV, Freddie King, Albert King,Robin Trower and Jeff Beck for the blues call and response. Then I saw a Paul Gilbert lesson many years later where he explained the art of bending and had an exercise for bending.
Still love the 2 string SRV bends and especially like the Robert Cray vibrato to this day as well as Hendrix. Cray because he plays so clean.
i used to struggle with guitar a lot. Barre chords, bending, slides.i just could not get it right. I made my first progress only after buying a fedora.
This is a great lesson on bending. Thank you Marty. What I have more trouble with is the vibrato part at the top of a bend. You showed a bit of it in this lesson but a deeper dive would help me greatly. Maybe it's just more practice and finger strengthening that I need, but any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Marty!
You are awesome!
Although I don't use Marty Music as much as I did as a beginner, you always have new helpful videos to help people like me learn. Your kids are lucky to have an awesome dad like you. Enjoy yourself this father's day! :)

Hey Marty, Thank you for the tutorial on Bending the Right Way. Greatly appreciated!!!
"Weighing" the guitar on the string helped me so much to understand the vibrato. Thanks so much!
This is a really helpful video, thanks Marty
I was waiting for this👌 thanks marty
Thank you for this video! I am trying to learn how to bend and this has helped very much!
Are you still going to do a lesson on keep your self alive by queen
Damn, I've been looking for a good tutorial on bending for so long, thanks Marty!
Thank you for your videos-- you are a great teacher.
I needed this Marty, Thanks!
This was actually super cool, working on some sabaton with a hard to hit bend on the bottom e, can't wait to practice
Love ya bro. Always so helpful
Thanks for that about the fingertips, made an immediate difference.
Thanks Marty. I'm learning Stairway to Heaven and I'm on the solo this helped a lot!
Amazinggg I love your guitar
Yay! 😃💫 ❣️Baker Street bends! 😃 🙏🏻 Thank you! This clarifies a lot!
Your great Marty - thanks 4 all the help
Hi Marty! Thanks for your teachings! Learning guitar is always a pleasure with you as a teacher! I have a question, what about bending and playing at the same time another note? I mean, like in the solo of Californication, I still cannot do both. Any tip? I just don´t know if I'm doing it wrong...
Great lesson Marty!🎸🤟🎸🤟
That helped me out, thank you Marty : )
Awesome tutorial Marty!!! Can you please, maybe do a lesson on Doing Alright? Maybe the solo section. That will be awesome!
incorporated running bends into my daily scales. Suddenly they're so much more expressive over just repetition
Great lesson sir

You are a good human at explaining things
Really cool. Thanks!
Thanks Marty you're the best teacher guitar for me, i'm youre student youtube from indonesian
Great job Marty , thank from chile
Coolest hat colour, Marty. Love that.
There's many ways to play guitar, but I do recommend getting good at pinky bends. It can help with bends after long/fast runs up the fretboard.
Thanks Marty😊👍❤️
Thank u so much!!!
Love you videos and the channel Marty. Nice Boss katana 👍
Such a sick guitar!
The testing of the ear is underrated...Thanks Marty!
I like the Phil X approach to Bending where you take your picking hand fingers and grab the strings behind the fretted note and yank on them.
Awesome i really needed this one mr marty. Can you please do a tutorial on Failure - Saturday Saviour?
can you do a guitar tutorial on Crowbar by Frank Carter and The Rattlesnakes?
Wow, thanks for the tips Marty.
DOPE LESSON
love marty music!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome!
ayeo marty really going crazy
Thanks for the tip about using the "weight of the guitar".
Thanks!
Could you do a tutorial on shape of my heart by Sting
I got a yousician ad.
*but i already use yousician...*
Also thank you Marty, because of you I'm learning a lot faster 👍🏻
This is great! Thanks! I’m getting better at bending, but for some reason, I can’t get the vibrato down. It’s like I’m missing the muscle in my left hand and arm to do it. I’ve tried and tried.
I’m exactly the opposite, it’s so unfortunate. I swear I’m missing the muscle to bend properly using the power from my wrist. But oddly I can do vibrato by swiveling my wrist if that makes sense, I cant do bending the same way though. So odd
Listening to him playing is a masterpiece
Bending is definitely a favorite of mine. Being able to bend up an extra fret makes a lot of difference in sound opposed to sliding up 1 fret. Thanks marty👍
Hey Marty, have you heard Steve Vai's latest release "candle power"? I'd like to hear your comments on that one. He does some crazy mad bending with a technique he calls joint shifting. Definitely worth a listen for anybody interested in bending and technique. Love the channel. Keep em coming.
I saw that too and was amazed at not only the skill but how much it reminded me of the more modern styles of like Yvette Young or the guys from Polyphia. I was never a big fan of the 80s Vai stuff other that technical ability, but he has been able to keep relevant in music for 40 years.
Ikr like damnnn I sooo want to learn the technique😆
2:47 bro did the thing and said wait no I'm on UA-cam right now
Any great song tips for learning these kinds of bends and shredds?
Really really great video. Thank u Sir!!! Been doin Johnny B Goode lately and honestly I nevar aimed for any pitch. Thought the bending in itself was the point. Which I figured had the purpose of telling the audience " go go go. Faster! Jump more u bstrds!!! Paarty!!!" Bcoz giving energy is part of the show. Part of Rockn'roll and certainly part of Chuck Berry. Not music to make u fall asleep. Im a noob. But less noob now. Thanks again! Also u should be selling them hats and shirts. Cya!
I dont like to ask for lessons because of the plethora in existence and too many people ask but this is one for the masses. I think a video on beginners electric guitar for acoustic players who have never delved. Considering the difference in playability and the need for gear ect ect. The two are the same instrument but so much different to play and i don’t know if many people realize this going into it. It could help a lot of people. Cheers Marty
This is definitely something I can learn from
Marty is the dad we all wanted
Love that Gibson es335
I feel like I just unlocked a secret power. I always only bent with one finger and wondered how guitarists like David Gilmour do step and step and a half bends without ripping their finger apart or feeling like the string is gonna snap. Using the middle finger to assist makes this 50,000 times easier and now I feel like a real pro LOL.
God that is a beautiful instrument
Literally the best intro with that 40 second jam oh boiii
