    The Monitor Audio Bronze 100 is a pretty nice sounding bookshelf speaker but how is it constructed? In this video I go over the build quality of the cabinet, T/S parameters of the drivers, crossover components, and the port tuning. You might be surprised by what Monitor Audio has to offer in its entry level Bronze line.

    I bought a set of Bronze 500 two months ago. They have a great balance across frequencies, at least in my Denon amped setup. Build quality is high, and I like that they use good quality internal wiring.
    I tried a lot of different brands and models, trying to find a replacement for my 23 year old JBL LX60s. It was much harder than I thought, but when I sat down and listened to the Bronze 500, I was convinced on the spot. The JBLs have a clear and broad soundstage, and I wanted to keep that, but add some more bass. Everything I tried before the Bronze 500 was too bass heavy, losing the open clarity I was used to.
    No doubt there are better speakers out there, but nothing at this price - and at the relatively modest footprint for a full tone floor standing, that doesn't need a sub.

    I find this speaker to be great. I have 4 of them in my cinema, lcr and center rear. Surrounds will be replaced as soon as funds alow😊
    It is flat down to 32 hz in my room (placement dependent). Sounds very detailed, open, yet powerfull enouch on its own for music. (I do have 3 subs to complement it though🙊).

    8 inch woofers in a bookshelf were common in 1980s. Now it's unique.

      unless paired with bigger waveguide, there will be most likely discontinuity in directivity.

    I wanted an 8" bookshelf with front firing port do to placement restraint and bought the Klipsch RB-81II but had to buy a tube amp to soften the harsh Klipsch tweeter and the results were significant. Lots of bass and not fatiguing at all. The high efficiency of Klipsch speakers makes them perfect for tube amps and totally fixes the ear piercing tweeter. Just an FYI for you Klipsch fans

      I had no idea that Klipsch had made a 8" bookshelf model. Very cool! I'm a big fan of big driver bookshelf speakers! Thanks for sharing!

    There is definitely some cool original features to that speaker. I like how the woofer is attached, I agree this should help brace the cabinet, I also like the plastic woofer basket, to me this is better than a stamped steel basket, it also looks like they did more than most companies when it comes to the internal foam 👍🏻 and the overall look to the speaker is much better than most. The plastic front baffle was a surprise. But I think it adds to the look and design. Very cool!

      @generationbehindhifi  6 місяців тому +2

      I thought so too. These speakers are currently on sale for under $600 a pair and I think they offer tremendous value for money at that price. The fit and finish was definitely above average for this price point. My only grip with them is that I do wish the 8" driver had more bass. I'll talk more about this in my review video which will be out on 1/15/24.

      Got mine in an open box condition with a couple of scratches from an UK retailer a couple of years back for 230 GBP.
      I drive them with an Audiolab 8300A and I don't feel they need more bass except when watching movies. They're about 1ft away from the wall as I don't like them to hang out too much away from the wall.@@generationbehindhifi

      @@generationbehindhifi It seems tuned very low, with the lower peak almost at 20Hz and 36Hz cabinet. May benefit from being closer to walls.
      MA also tends to go for "clean" bass and very slightly enhanced detail response

    It is possible that the Q150 crossover is 2nd order - if it is a series design. If the positive binding post is connected to both the coil and the resistor, and the other lead of the resistor connects to the tweeter - and the other lead of the coil connects to the cap AND the other side of the tweeter AND the woofer - and the other lead of the cap connects to the other lead of the woofer AND to the negative binding post - THEN it is a series crossover. If you can look at the circuit board, it would be very interesting to see if it is a series or parallel XO.
    This Bronze 100 speaker appears to have a 2nd order (parallel) filter on the drivers, and a notch filter on the woofer?

    This 🔊 speaker is perfect for a subwoofer upgrade, can you recommend any . I recently put in a 6 .5 Skar audio into some old 2600 JBL & those suckers 🔊💨

    • @generationbehindhifi
      @generationbehindhifi  4 місяці тому +1

      Sorry! I haven't done any modeling on the MA100 Bronze so can't recommend anything. I also think it will be tricky to mess around with the drivers because of the proprietary mounting design. The woofer is held in place by a long thread bolted that is installed from the rear cabinet wall.

    It would be great to see how the Silver 100s are built in comparison to these and whether this manifests in a big difference in sound quality.

      if that is true, then the industry is bananas. the silver model is X2 the price of bronze. Maybe we can sell the crossover from the silver to ppl that bought the bronze for a profit

    I like what you do very much, thanks for the video. One critisism though: I think your living room has a strong reverb and since your mic is not close to you when you speak, there is quite a strong reverb on the recording. It has nothing to do with the content you do, which I like. But it would me much better to listen to if there wasn't that much reverb.

    • @generationbehindhifi

  • @OneCosmic749
    @OneCosmic749 6 місяців тому +1

    I don't like the idea that the mounting bolt is basically pulling away the magnet from the basket. I think it's pretty big weakpoint and classic construction using bolts through front of the basket is much more solid idea.

    • @generationbehindhifi
      @generationbehindhifi  6 місяців тому +1

      I appreciate the comment! Bowers Wilkins has been mounting their midrange and tweeter for decades like this on their 800 series. IMO if done right, it should provide more mass and reduce resonances because you're essential tying the front baffle to the rear. In theory it sounds great but I don't have the measuring equipment to determine if its really effective or not. I would assume so since B&W has been incorporating it into their designs for so long (Since Nautilus series).

    3:52 I don't think it's made from paper. That's just an outer layer found on many VC formers; usually they are aluminium underneath.
    Modern drivers sometimes have fibreglass formers

    • @generationbehindhifi

      A plastic composite basket does have its benefits in terms of resonance vs stamped steel, but I see your point. Time will tell if they last.

    As a former owner, I can attest that the Focal aria 906 has a cheap crossover that says $299 a pair, not $2200 a pair. The AL/MG tweeter is a cheap version of focals better lines. It has over ring and an unrealistic treble. A $30 vifa tweeter is far superior. Sounds to me like the speaker caps are saturating easily at higher volumes. I got rid of mine, and consider them inferior to a few $499 a pair speakers, because...they are.
