  • I purchased a pair of JBL Studio 630 bookshelf speakers and immediately tear them down so I can see the cabinet construction, crossover design, and T/S parameters of the drivers. If this kind of stuff interest you, join me as I turn some wrenches and run some tests on JBL's new 630 bookshelf speaker.

    Love the channel. I bought these a couple days after you did. The next day the sale price was gone. I can't imagine a better speaker for $349.00. At $700 the competition stiffens up. BTW I listened to a lot of UA-cam speaker reviews and just couldn't take it any more, so I asked Chat GPT to write a speaker review using words to describe a fine wine. This is what I got -
    Indulge in a sensory symphony as you explore the rich tones of the AcoustiVine™ Chenin Blanc speakers. Like a fine wine swirling in a crystal glass, these speakers offer a bouquet of harmonious notes that dance upon the palate of your ears.
    Upon first sip, or rather, listen, you're greeted by a crisp clarity that sparkles like a freshly opened bottle of champagne. The highs flutter delicately like the effervescence of bubbles, teasing your senses with their airy elegance.
    As you delve deeper, the midrange unfolds like a velvety merlot, smooth and full-bodied, wrapping you in warmth and comfort. Each note resonates with the depth of a well-aged Chenin Blanc, leaving a lingering impression that tantalizes the soul.
    And just when you think you've experienced it all, the bass sweeps in like a bold syrah, commanding attention with its robust presence. It pulses through the room, filling every corner with its deep, resonant tones, inviting you to lose yourself in its intoxicating embrace.
    With the AcoustiVine™ Chenin Blanc speakers, every listening experience becomes a journey of discovery, a sensory exploration akin to savoring a fine vintage. So pour yourself a glass of your favorite audio and let the symphony unfold before you. Cheers to the perfect pairing of sound and sensation.
    I'm looking forward to the crossover build.

      haha! Love the chatgpt review.
      I agree. You won't find a better speaker than the Studio 630 for $349. You can't even DIY a pair yourself that will be better.
      While it is disappointing to see the disparities in parameters between woofers, I would have never known about it until I measured them. To me they sounded great. But if JBL really wants $700 for these, then they will need to work on their tolerances between drivers! I'll will work on conveying this message better next time. Thanks for the comment.

      @@generationbehindhifi No problem that's the message i got. It would be interesting to compare them to a DIY kit like the Swans HiVi that sell on amazn for about the same price. @generationbehindhifi  Місяць тому +1

      Thank you! At the $349 price, I think they are a bargain even with the disparity in woofers. They really are a great sounding speaker with excellent cabinet construction for the money and most won't hear the small differences between midrange drivers. I probably should have spent more time emphasizing that in this video. :) But I agree, its a bit disappointing seeing the large manufacturing tolerances within drivers from such a big name.

    Hi,
    Just stumbled accros your channel. Nice video's.
    I've also experimented with the purple CSA caps your about to use in your project. These are great!
    They are very neutral, and don't seem to color the sound. I love the midrange detail, and transparancy. Soundstage is good. These are my goto caps for future projects. Good luck on your experiment, but be sure to also upgrade the inside wiring to teflon. And use a decent source.

    • @generationbehindhifi
      @generationbehindhifi  25 днів тому +2

      Thank you! I completely agree and I think they are much better than the Mundorf caps that are selling at the same price point. So far I'm very happy with the CSA caps! Hopefully I can capture some of the sound quality difference in my crossover upgrade video that I'm working on so people can see the differences that good quality caps can make.

    I love speaker teardown videos and you have the best ones! I tore down one of my JBL 620 speakers and found mostly the same things:
    Drivers appear to have the same magnet at ~ 4" diameter with the 5.25" woofer weighing 3 Lbs 9.9 Oz and having a resonant frequency of 56Hz.
    The crossovers are similar with the 620 having one less iron core inductor, one less electrolytic cap and two fewer resistors.
    Port tuning on the 620' came in 1 Hz higher @ 44 Hz. The component differences could explain the shape of the impedance curve I got. Instead of a steadily rising line in the tweeter's band, the 620 had what I'd call two rising peaks; a smaller one at 1.2Khz and a bigger one at 8Khz with the dip between them at 2 Khz. I'm wondering what effect this has on the sound.
    I had previously commented that I was skeptical component upgrades would have meaningful improvement on sound quality but after seeing all the modification you're working on, I'm not so sure! Can't wait to see what you find!

    Another great video! It’s really interesting that though the midrange drivers had such significant differences, it sounds like it’s not all that audible in practice. At least not enough to deter you from liking them. It’s a very handsome speaker.

    As a Jbl fan I quite like these. Nothing is perfect. I am surprised about the 12 and 13 percent measurement differences. Years back I think they were much more meticulous about driver quality. I run more vintage jbls including the L112 and L100 centuries. And pro drivers like 2226h for reinforce ment of my altec 604 8H Urei monitors. The horn in your 630 looks great. Having a small woofer keep up with it would be a crossover challenge which I'm sure Jbl address. I'm not an engineer just a long term audiophile. Many are snobby about Jbl still. When you use amps like Accuphase and Luxnan and better Rotel they shine. Although efficient Jbls like current and watts. Your high end parts will bring suitable improvement. A mate of mine who is a professional tech upgrades all sorts of speakers and the components make big differences.

    • @generationbehindhifi
      @generationbehindhifi  Місяць тому

      I like them too for what I paid and mention this at the end. They really are great speakers at the sale price! If it wasn't for the big gap in tolerances between drivers then I think these would be worth every bit of $700 per pair. The cabinet and crossover are all very nice for this price point. Thanks for the comment!

    1:00 seat the speaker in front of a mild fan space heater for 10 minutes. It'll soften that kind of glue. Just amke sure you aren't damaging sensitive plastic parts on the drivers

    Great video. I own the JBL 4367 and 590s. I feel like my 590s have perfect left to right balance of the drivers (soundstage is locked and centered) so I wonder if this is a bad batch or if their quality has dropped.
    Sonically the 4367 is amazing, best speaker ever, but man it is ugly lol.

    Three metal core coils on the woofer? They must be using a 4th order filter (using 2 of the coils) and a notch filter uses the 3rd one? Seems that the woofer needs some serious work to pull it into line.

    • @generationbehindhifi
      @generationbehindhifi  Місяць тому +2

      That is correct, 3 iron core inductors are dedicated to the woofer circuit. The 3.9mH inductor is in parallel.
