6:36 One sidenote to add: Accelerated earning rates (5X and 3X back in points)for Scotiabank Gold Amex DO NOT apply when the transaction is made on a foreign currency purchase. However, with the Passport Visa Infinite, there are NO such restrictions, which means if you are dining out in a restaurant outside Canada, you are still getting 2X back in points on such purchases, given you have not yet reached the spending cap in the 2X categories ($40000 per year). Just FYI.
Omg is this the same with the Amex Cobalt? Will I earn the accelerated earning rates when using this card abroad? (Most of my expenses are travel expenses from outside Canada, so this will affect which card I’ll apply for)
@@BladerOfHawk The Visa Infinite version has a worse earn rate than the amex gold version, but only the Visa Infinite version earns 2x on groceries, transit, restaurant purchases outside Canada. The Amex version is similar to the Amex Cobalt, but it DOES NOT earn 5x or 3x on purchases OUTSIDE Canada. And FYI, travel is NOT an accelerated category of any of these two cards mentioned.
The momentum sounds like a great offer. A lot of Asian grocery stores like TNT do not take AMEX so having a 4% cash back from a Visa card on groceries is a win in my books.
If your card is tied to a Scotia Total Equity plan the annual fee is reduced by 50% thus effectively making the priority pass visits, incl restaurants roughly $11CAD each plus you hold a no currency conversion fee card that can be handy :) In general I find Scotia credit cards underwhelming....
4:14 How do you link the Scotia Amex cards to American Express' Latest offer program? When I go to AMEX's site to register my card, I receive an error?
Awesome video, thanks! Which is a better no foreign transaction fee travel card? Scotia Passport Visa OR HSBC World Elite? Also, which Non Amex US credit card is your go to travel with?
I told my dad to get the passport, even though I did have a look at the gold. After he got his card and looked back and was pissed at myself at how much better the earn rate is on the gold on top of the much better promo offer 🤦♂️
Hey Prince, Can you talk about RBC AVION Platinum & Infinite VISA. Thank you. I have the AVION Platinum through a credit card switch with RBC Signature VISA. Thanks
Im new to Scotia Bank and they offered me my choice of these three cards. The Gold Amex card I just wasn't sure on how many places here in Canada would take it and I already have a BMO World Elite cash back card so I took the Scotia Passport. Pretty sure I won't be getting the 40K points but 30K is easy enough.
do you know how many places in Canada take Amex? Would people get this if they go to the US? Just wondering if it can actually be used in Canada grocery, ect
You need to look for the manual registration link for each offer, which is often circulated in online forums, our Facebook group, or our Discord chat. Then you can enter your Scotia Gold Amex number and it typically registers successfully!
Is it possible to get this card if I don’t open a scotia bank account? I don’t have $4000 or $5000 to waive the fee I don’t want a scotia bank account til next year . But I still want the gold Amex from scotia
Basically only a cosmetic change, not much to do with the redemption values. More info here: princeoftravel.com/blog/scotia-rewards-and-scene-will-merge-to-become-scene/
Hi Ricky, what's your thought on Scotia Platinum American Express card? I feel that card is little awkward premium card, but it might be pretty good on travel benefits and Amex offers, however I don't expect any travels in the new future and a needless hard pull...
I agree, it’s not the best premium card. High annual fee, mediocre signup bonus, and a 4x earning rate that isn’t even as good as the Gold’s 5x. I’d consider the regular Amex Platinum with a stronger set of travel benefits as a better choice.
Thanks for continuing to make this great content! Always good to get the insights from someone who lives and breathes this stuff to take some of the guesswork out. Just checking, but I don't see anything recently about this - seems VISA and AMEX are doing the most in this space, right? Is Mastercard doing anything interesting in your opinion?
Mastercard lags behind the other two but they're making some plays of their own. Here in Canada, the HSBC World Elite has risen in prominence in recent years, and they've secured the Aeroplan + Chase partnership in the US. I'd love to see them make more moves and compete more fiercely.
I have a question? Let's say a person is travelling and wants to book a flight ticket with EMIRATES with the use of points and I do know that for some airlines the points that you do earn from your AMEX card can be transferred to the airline ticket on a ration of 1:1. Is this also applicable on Scotia AMEX card?
Start with a secured card from one of the Big 5 banks (I think CIBC is the most friendly with newcomers), and then after six months to one year of building a solid credit history you'll be able to get an Amex 👌🏼
@@PrinceofTravel Won’t I need a Canadian Tax Payer number to get a credit card and build credit history ? Or I won’t need it while I’m a student and still be able to get a card?
@@PrinceofTravel Thanks Ricky. Applied the Momentum Visa. Feel it is a good card for primary usage(not only for getting the bonus) due to its generous rebate ratio and good insurance coverage. Please recommend other cards in this "primary use" category.
Can i get the scotiabank gold amex card as a international student? If i can then what are the requirements? and after how long can i get the card after going to canada as undergraduate student
Hey Ricky, so sad that I applied for the Scotia Gold card in January and got 25000 :(. I already got the sign up bonus, and already redeemed it for some travel. Do you think if I cancel it right now, and if I applied again in august, will I be able to get the sign up bonus again? One more quick question, how do you manually enter the Scotia Gold for Amex offers?? Thanks again Ricky. Keep it up!!! You're Awesome!!
No guarantees obviously, but I haven't heard data points of Scotiabank strictly enforcing their eligibility terms, so it's something you could try. For the Amex Offers you need to look for the manual registration link for each offer, which is often circulated in online forums, our Facebook group, or our Discord chat. Then you can enter your Scotia Gold Amex number and it typically registers successfully!
We carry both these cards already and always pick amex first then visa to gain more points. Also great insurance, rental benefits, and the front line with amex is fantastic to have.
Hey man i Had a Question Right Now i Have the Normal Scotia Momentum Visa Card the 1 With the 39 dollar Per Year How Can i Upgrade to The Infinite Visa Card and Will They Even Accept My Request Of Applying For the New Infinite Visa Card??
You should be able to give Scotiabank a call to upgrade to the Visa Infinite. You probably won’t get the welcome offer though, you’d need to submit a new application for that
Ricky, I have an important question. Is the Scotia Gold Amex Card eligible for less (limited) Amex offers compared to non co-branded Amex cards like the Cobalt and Gold?
Hey great video! I got Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite in January because of free lounge passes as I hoped we would be able to travel sometime later this year. This offer on Scotia Amex Gold looks solid esp the 5X categories. Do you think if I apply for this, will I be eligible for SUB since I hold another credit card from Scotiabank currently. Has there been any DPs where people have been able to get the SUB regardless of having a Scotia credit card within the last two years?

I definitely got 5x points on Scotiabank AMEX Gold at restaurants in Hong Kong. This was back in 2018
2018 was before no foreign transaction fees, so maybe they changed it
I don’t plan on getting the cash back card but it’s really good and honest of you for mentioning the GCR sign up bonus. 👍
