I do them similar to the way you do. Except my back foot is back there but my back left foot is positioned a little different. Also switch to me is a little easier for me. I learned heel flips first, so I do a lot of heel flip tricks easier. I'm the opposite lol. Nice varial heel you do too.

It's gonna feel weird at first but try to squat a little bit more instead of bending over when popping. Thats why it's going behind you. You are not centered above your board. Hope this helps a little bit.
@coryeet yeah I really struggle a lot at my Regular Heelflips. Well I can do them but 5%, only switch heels I can do them normally and 50% of the times nollieheels. So every time me and my friends play game of skate they always do Heelflips (normal) so I have the first letter. My Heelflip doesn't go behind me. It follows through with my flick but if I do them with light flick it tends to under rotate. And if I really flick it. It will over rotate or get bodied by primo. And majority at the time I have to jump really far up to my front just to catch them. But I really don't want that. I just want them near and underneath me like my switch heels.
One of my favorites! Got one perfectly off the propped up grates around the trees at cecil in philly last week. Jisy need to get it over something next. Then I sprained my ankle doing a stupid fakie heel.. any tips for people with reoccurring ankle injuries?
These are one of my favorite tricks to do but I have recently had issues with them. As soon as you said the thing about popping more straight and more powerfully I remembered that was the exact thing I needed to help learn them the first time. Thank you so much for reminding me, I'm sure I'll be back to nailing these in no time (plus you saved me having to troubleshoot them myself) - You're the man!!!
Im trying to relearn these use to have them on lock but I think its the shape of my baker deck not really use to the full shape yet plus its heavy with indy standards

For me this trick is all in the front foot. I have to use my front foot to push the board around while doing the heelflip.
