Today, we will compare cold war era Russia's interceptor MIG-31 with United States’ air superiority aircraft F-15 eagle and would try to determine which aircraft is more capable in terms of performance, maneuverability, avionics and firepower.
1. Quick Facts
The MIG-31 is a supersonic interceptor aircraft used by the Russian and Kazakh Air Forces. Known as Foxhound in the west, the jet is one of the fastest combat aircraft. The MIG-31 first entered service in 1981… On the other hand, the F-15 Eagle is a twin-engine, all-weather tactical fighter aircraft designed for air superiority and high speed interception. The aircraft was introduced in 1976. The F-15 has phenomenal air combat record of 100 aerial victories.
2. Performance
The MIG-31 is powered by a pair of turbofan engines capable of producing 68,000 pounds of thrust combined. These engines can push the aircraft to maximum speed of Mach 2.83. With maximum range of 1,900mi, the jet can conduct combat operations within the radius of 900mi… Similarly, the F-15 is powered by 2 turbofan engines, generating 58,000 pounds of thrust combined. With the help of these engines, the aircraft can gain maximum speed of Mach 2.5. The F-15 comes with ferry range of 3,450mi and can combat within the radius of 1,221mi.
3. Maneuverability
The MIG-31’s design was based on cold war era doctrine to intercept and destroy enemy with incredible high speed, altitude and rate of climb instead of maneuverability. Its airframe can only sustain 5Gs maneuvers. An aircraft’s maneuvering capacity steadily decreases with altitude. On the other side, the high thrust-to-weight ratio and low wing loading provide the F-15 outstanding maneuverability. Wing loading is the ratio of an aircraft's weight to its wing area. The lower wing loading combined with higher thrust to weight ratio allow the jet to turn tightly without bleeding the speed.
4. Radar & Avionics
The MiG-31 was among the first aircraft equipped with passive electronically scanned array radar, which can detect fighter aircraft sized target from 200mi of range. The radar is capable to track up to 24 targets and attack 8 of them simultaneously. On the other hand, F-15 eagle is equipped with the APG-63 and 70 radar, which are capable to lock both low and high-flying targets. These radars can detect and track its opponent from 205mi of distance.
5. Firepower
The MIG-31 is outfitted with 8 hardpoints to carry a combination of missiles and bombs. For long range engagements, MIG-31 is armed with R-33 missile capable of engaging high speed targets within the distance of 190mi. The aircraft can carry R-37 hypersonic air-to-air missile with operational range of 250mi. On the contrary, the F-15 can carry 13 tons weapons payload on its 9 hardpoints. For shorter range engagements, the aircraft is armed with aim-9, aim-7 and radar-guided medium-range air-to-air missiles. The aircraft is capable of shooting aim-9x high off-boresight missiles.

The Mig-31 Foxhound was mainly designed for high -altitude and BVR interception not for dogfight and there is no point to make a comparison between two aircrafts different in size, power and capability.

The Mig 31s comparison is actually the F 14 and Phoenix missile combination. The Mig 31 was designed to take out B 52s and B-1s just like the Tomcat was intended to shoot down TU 22M backfires before they could attack US carriers. Both the Mig 31 and F 14 carried long range air to air missiles that work well against bombers but not so much against other fighters.
And why was the Phoenix program closed? (no insults or banter, just wondering)

Like over Ukraine, the MiG-31 has shutdown airspace access to all Ukrainian pilots from well within Russian airspace. Nah, wouldn't work. There's very good reason why the Blackbird became a RECON aircraft only. It's pretty much the exact same good and bad sides as caused the MiG-25 to end up similarly.
And big problem, the west doesn't have any true longrange AAMs since the Phoenix was retired. The latest model AMRAAMs are trying to pretend they can mostly do it, but their limitations from being designed as mediumrange pretty much kills their chances.
The Meteor is the closest you can get, and while good, it still can't compete with the missiles the MiG-31 carries, or perhaps more correctly, it cannot compete with the powerful MiG-31 radar providing the missiles far superior guidance than any western fighter can manage.

As was found out with the fighter that ended up the Blackbird, that's not nearly as much of a good idea as you would think. Titanium has good sides, light and strong. And bad sides, like that it cracks more easily than steel or aluminium.

Considering what a major success the Su-57 have been last year, it would be no surprise at all if it was produced in larger numbers, pushing the PAK-DP even further into the future. Essentially, the Su-57s have shown to be capable of doing almost everything the MiG-31 does, and often better, thanks to its amazing sensor suite, only downside being the ability to not carry potential future larger longrange missiles.

While the MiG is faster...by a little (the F-15 can sprint for 90 seconds to M2.5) it can't hold a candle to the Eagle as a flying machine. Many years ago the Russians lost their Chief Test Pilot in a MiG-31 accident where his fuel indicators went haywire and he thought he was running out...but it was almost fully laden and when he tried to turn to final (again thinking it was light of fuel) he stalled and crashed. For high altitude interception I'll give it to the MiG...but everywhere else the Eagle wins hands down. Good video!

math-challenged or hearing problem maybe? the 31's 190-mile AAMs have almost twice the reach of the f-15's 100-mile AAMs. The chicken would have to survive six 31 AAMs before firing its first AAM (but the 31 would never allow the chicken to get close enough for that). And the speed of the 31's AAMs is nowadays well above 12 mach compared to 6 mach for the chicken.

MiG31 has much more powerful radar, so it can fire the first missiles and whoever fires first usually wins. So MiG31 on 1vs1 would have big advantage.
@@teemuvesala9575 incorrect… regarding single most powerful radar… the PESA radar that the mig 31 was equipped with can scan a largar area faster than the pulse Doppler arrays used by their nato counterparts, however, PESA doesn’t determine the radar contacts location as precisely as PDA or AESA for a weapons lock, and since it ran only a single band at a time could be jammed much more easily by ground units or other aircraft, where as PDA can scan on multiple bands to accurately determine the radar contacts precise location.… basically the mig 31 has a more powerful radar that can scan larger areas, faster engines, and longer range missiles compared with its predecessor the mig 25…it still can’t dogfight to save its life… its a jet designed to intercept subsonic nato bombers to prevent them from entering soviet (Russian) air space to deliver their deadly cargo… hence its designation as an “interceptor and reconnaissance fighter”…never designed to go toe to toe against dedicated fighter jets… it would be annihilated in a battle against an F15 which is designed to hunt and destroy enemy fighters, hence it’s designation as an “air superiority fighter.” Hence why the mig 25, a similar craft to mig 31, had a lackluster 8 kills vs 8 losses in air to air battles against other fighters and the F15 has a peerless 100+ kills vs 0 losses in air to air battles. In a hypothetical battle, the mig 31 would lose against F15 every time because it was never designed to battle other fighter jets.

Russia have done longest intercept in history Air to Air at a range of 400KM with Su-27, the F15 or any US fighter wouldn't even have a chance to get near a Russian fighter to even have a chance to use it's missile or technology, Russia have best and longest Air to Air missiles with a variation of models at over 500KM distance since 2002 possible even 1000+KM by now at Hypersonic speed, US best Air to Air missile defense can be used at less than 140KM only, US fighters have 0 Chance against Russia long range hypersonic Air to Air missiles, type of plane or technology wouldn't even matter if the other fighter can destroy you from so far at Hypersonic speed. Plus Russia is making missiles now that are Hypersonic with Nuclear as fuel, no other country even has a missle that has a Uranium/Nuclear as rocket engine fuel, so the range is limitless by now. (Russia's Skyfall missile that can circle the earth for years with unlimited range!) + 9m730 burevestnik and others. The one that has better Air to Air missiles will win, forget about the fighter.

For everyone who compare Dogfight capabilities. Mig31 is BVR interceptor. F15 is air superiority fighter. You should compare him to su30 or mig29 in that aspect. End if you think mig31 can be joked around with check the growling sidewinder's take on mig31. He and he's friend were flying f16s against it. You will be surprised.

The F15 is definitely the superior fighter jet of the two. For it's original (interceptor) purpose, the M31 is more specialized. Two different designs for two different purposes. However, I see the awesome beauty of both jets.
I would say that the mig-31 would probably beat the original F15 a/b in a long range engagement, but that a modern F15 will beat any mig-31 any day in the week.
The mig-31 is a long range fighter, it has a huge radar with range up to 200 km, it has r33 missiles with 120 km max range. So i would say it would be able to spot and lock a early F-15 before it could do the same. Really thats what it was designed to do, long range kills. And since the soviets only had the mig 23 which the F-15 turned to dust it was necessary.

the mig can track 24 targets and attack 8 of them but how does it expect to fight a 8v1 fight? Especially against the newest f-15s, and technically the mig would be fighting 1 or multiple f-15s and trying to dodge surface to air missiles which would be impossible with poor maneuverability

The Mig 31 and most other of the Russian aircraft use rivets for the paneling of their aircraft, hence reducing its stealth capability and the overall aerodynamic capability of the aircraft.

The F-15 has the capability to shoot down satellites, so the fact that the Mig-31 can climb higher wont do it any good.
If the Russians also arm the 31s with such missiles sure it can shoot down but the Russians already have S 550 satelite killer missile

They're both nice fighters. But that's as far as it goes. Though Mig-31 may climb faster to shoot down opponents from above the F-15 can easily avoid its missiles and respond with one of our own. Remember that the Mig 31 is not maneuverable as the F 15 thus can't avoid missiles that easy!

the terminal agility of the AAMs of the 31 will decide if it kills first; the 31 will see first anyway with its new radar but even if the f-15 saw first, its AAMs have half the reach and it'll have to defeat the full long-distance AAM ordnance of the 31 long before it can shoot a single AAM.
Mig 31 is an interceptor fighter. f15 is a heavy multi-role fighter, the classes are completely different. f15 should be compared with su35.
It's like comparing oranges and apples. The F15 is a dedicated air superiority fighter with some versions redefined for ground attack missions. The foxhound is purely a higher altitude long range interceptor.
F-15 record was established in the Middle East. If the US was up against Russia, the Mig-31 would of put the Eagles record in the negative. You actually need a combative enemy to prove your Eagles worth! Something Russia hasn't had the opportunity to prove
They both have advantages n disadvantages over each other, so in each fight it will depend on the circumstances n conditions I think but I know so little about fighter jets maybe 1% at most

F15 without question. The Israeli F15s defeated Syrian mig 25s which are “predecessors” to the mig 31… though overall it’s really the same jet.
They are not even close to the same thing , the MiG 25 didnt even have a Pulse-Doppler "Look Down" radar while the MiG-31 has hyperaonic missiles and the Zaslon-M , the most powerful radar ever mounted on a fighter jet

@@ebenitez2011 similar body does not mean anything. The MiG 31 and its predecessor are interceptors , not meant to dogfight my guy. They have 2 different roles. And let me be clear , what the MiG 31 would do against an invading force? Kill Awacs and tankers from 400km away and leave the F 15s to the Su 35 or other air superiority fighters. Imagine having all this and you just loose your Awacs without even being close to engaging the threat. The R-37 missiles are no match to anything with its speed and range. What the conflict of the discussion is that the mig 31 Will not dogfight the F 15 and its not a relic like the MiG 25 , which didtnt even have PD. Now the Zaslon itself negates any dissadvantage from being PESA vs AESA radar by being very powerful (in wattage) and having the biggest dish than any aircraft ever.

The mig 31 can’t outrun an aim 120 amraam which travels up to Mach 4… in a BVR engagement it’s toast.

The amraam 120 has a top speed between Mach 4 to 4.5 depending what sources you quote… the mig 31 can certainly fly up to 80k+ (service ceiling), but it doesn’t maintain this height, traveling w/ nose down to do a top down attack/interception of the enemy… it’s top speed is anywhere from Mach 2.8 to 3.0… So I completely disagree with you, and Amram 120 Can and will catch up to MIG 31… amraam 120 is also more agile then the mig 31 specially in head on situation.
@@ebenitez2011 the missile doesn't burn all the way to the target. Once the missile is out of fuel every move the MiG 31 does the missile drains unretrieveable energy to follow. The MiG can manoeuvre and regain the lost speed until the missile is trashed

In any fight if you can take the higher ground, you will win. For 15 to win this battle it must engage Mig 31 in a dog fight otherwise its not a competition.

How is soviet doctrine all about high speed intercept and not maneuverability... of the Su27 is soviet era and it was one of, if not the most maneuverable fighter at the time?
I often hear, that actually the russians were and still are hyper focused on maneuverability.. as for USAF doctrine they focus on high energy.
The MiG31 was a thing all on it's one... there's no western analogous to it. It was made to intercept the supersonic spy and bomber planes.
Then they were adapted into a BVR platform against other fighters, and most recently adapted to Air-to-ground missions.
How does it fare against the Eagle?
Simple, the eagle has a better radar.. but the difference isn't as high as most think.
The eagle will likely see the foxhound first. That being said... without a longer range missile, as the USAF doesn't yet have a long range AA missile, the Foxhound has an advantage in range, and it will use it to press the Eagle back into a defensive position.
I know that the best Ukraine has is soviet era Su27.. but even if they got an F16 or even F15.. without the right weapons it would be the same, as most of VKS's Air to air kills have been made by Foxhounds far away from the frontlines.
If they fight it wont be about stats...stats do not transfer to combat in the sky. They both fit a system and work with many other weapons in that system, not alone. If you are fighting a Mig 31 you are also fighting s400 and its very long range radar, you are fighting a50 and many other weapons ...If your in the 31 you face AEW, F35, while you search for 15 you have stealthy 22 could be close. one v one is just for you tube and video games.
No competition here. The F-15 is undefeated against all other aircraft. No other platform can boast that.

Any situation where there are multiple of each opposing each other, the MiG-31 automatically wins. Even the original datalink from the 80s was better than what the west managed for 2 decades after, and the upgraded current version is simply just superior.
The F-15 is a fine aircraft, but the MiG-31 simply takes many of its good sides and turn them up to 11, or more like 20, while simply dumping the things it's not focused on, like agility.
If you want an aircraft that is superduper good at flinging longrange missiles at targets before they even think they can be seen, MiG-31 is by far the better.
IF however you want to have a decent chunk of the above ability, but instead of getting all of it also wants better overall air to air ability, including dogfighting, then the F-15 is better.

Yeah, that was copied from the Soviet missiles after German reunification showed how inferior western shortrange AAMs were leading most notably to the desperately rushed development of the 9X version of the Sidewinder.
The ORIGINAL R-73 from 1984 had an 80 degree offbore sight.
The latest model however has a 150 degree offbore sight and more importantly, a lock after fire ability, allowing it to literally attempt to shoot at enemies right behind itself(that extreme lock after launch is really ineffective, but having the ability is a nice addition).

Only thing that competes with it is the Su-57, because yikes, 3 frontal X-band radars and at least 2 K-band radars in the wings, all cooperating for maximum effect? And even THAT combination radar isn't automatically better than the raw power and superb software of the MiG-31.
(whoever did the programming of the -31 electronics must have been a certified genius... It's GOOD, when 4 decades later, noone has managed to code something truly better.)

Im going with reality. The F15 has a perfect record in actual combat missions never having been shot down. Russian jets like all Russian military equipment is based on 18th century thinking that bigger is always better. Pilot training and skill, finesse is what matters, however. Any fool can step on the gas and go really fast in any machine that moves. Races however, are won in the turns.

You are comparing apples and oranges since the Mig-31 is unlikely to engage an F15, that role is for the SU-57 which will be around assuming any NATO combat with Russia will take place within their integrated Dome radar and missile system that can detect all NATO aircraft, including the F-35 some 300 km away and direct missiles from the ground, ships and fighter aircraft onto the target. In this situation, the Mig031 will be flying well above the altitude of the NATO jets, as it is in Ukraine at the moment where it releases its missiles from within Russian air space before turning away to avoid anti-air missiles. This allows it missiles to benefit from the kinetic energy gained as it falls to the altitude of the target so making it more difficult to detect and avoid by forward searching radar. This aircraft has been responsible for a major share of the 411 Ukraine jets shot down so far in this war.

Could you please run a simulation of two or four Phoenix missiles, launched from two F-15s, scissoring against a Kh-47M2 air-launched ballistic missile in the final 200 miles of the Kh-47M2s flight. I wonder if the Phoenix can turn in to a kill radius of the maneuvering Kh-47M2. ? I believe Poland has some F-15s.
Phoenix missiles were an F14 weapon, not an F15 weapon. F15s used Sparrows during the Cold War and then started using AMRAAMs.
Phoenix missiles never shot anything down and were crazy expensive. It was only launched twice in combat with no kills.

Israel and the US Air Force put an end to that question 30-40 years ago when their F-15's went up against the Mig-25 Foxbat (Mig-31 & Mig-25 basically the same aircraft), they both blew the Foxbat out of the sky, even an Iranian F5 Tiger Shark downed a Iraqi Mig-25. The Mig-31 is an ancient cold war relic, where as the F-15 has been highly modernized over the decades making it still the most fearsome air superiority fighter on the planet (aside from the F-22 that is)

The hypersonic missiles you aare talking about are nothing else than normal missiles that can achieve hypersonic speeds. It has almost no maneuverability whatsoever and can easily be shot down if not massed. Russia cannot mass them because they neither have enough operational jets nor the missiles themselves
