Very nostalgic! Always great to see these kind of insights into the media of the time. Like many, I wish I had kept all mine. Sounds was the best of the music broadsheets for me.
My favourite music paper! Sounds! Again different genre's mixed together as just music! Can 1980 be such a long long time ago? I used the indie chart for my disco back in the day! Had to mix it up back then! Love it Chris!
Hi Chris, another great trip down Nostalgia Avenue. 1980, that was the year i saw Adam And The Ants, a lot different from when i saw them 2 or 3 years earlier, slightly confused to say the least😂. Very energetic but didnt understand all that pirate and Indian stuff. Anyway, great video, Cheers.
Wonderful trip down memory lane Chris. By 1980, NME was my sole music paper of choice as I couldn’t connect with NWOBHM. It was all about the happy go lucky sounds of post punk for me in 1980 😀
Thanks, Chris, I remember buying this issue of Sounds, The Graham Parker and the Rumour five star revue was well deserved, an all-time classic, which I still have.Bruce Springsteen features on 'Endless Night', he is a great admirer of Parker.
Oh my, my music mag of choice late 70's early 80's. Still at school, just, lol. Yeah, as commented below, got that earlier Sounds heavy metal album too , as well as America strikes back. The former was much better : )) Was into hard rock and heavy rock/metal, so this mag was a no brainer. SO much i remember here. I think it reduced in size. I recall the paper being bigger earlier. Not sure when though, as unfortunately i haven't retained any issues. Must've chucked them out, and i kinda regret it now. Loved the adverts too, the shops where you had to actually write to them to order records etc. Fantastic nostalgic watch!
Morning Chris. That was a fun "trip"! Chinatown was my fave single that year, but that Ian Hunter 45 (We Gotta Get Out of Here / live tracks) was excellent too - imagine a heavier Blondie with Hunter/Ronson guesting. Am I the only person who loved the G-Force album?😄
Hi Pete. Good to hear from you again. Don’t have the G force album. I personally don’t care for it. Dirty fingers should have come out instead. Just about to do a Gary Moore video as it happens!
@@TheVinylOrchard: You too. That video should be good. It was fun in that era to see the parallel careers of Gary Moore and Michael Schenker. I like Dirty Fingers too. I think Tommy Aldridge and Jimmy Bain were on it, but no one seems sure.
Wow!.....weren't we fortunate in those times,a broad sheet music paper to lose one's self. Even though the NME had the best photography....it became a posers paper. Spotted the Q tips...follow on from The Street Band (toast was awful!) I used to buy them all,Trouser Press included. I must admit to overusing the pause button Chris! Lovely video, ian.
I was in heaven with the music weeklies. I bought all three each week..if I got the train to London I could get them on Tuesday! The covers were frequently works of art themselves. I remember when Sounds folded in 90? I was gutted. They put Nirvana on the cover in 89 which made be buy the album..which is now my pension plan! 😂
It's funny how we forget how important these magazines were back in the day and it was the only source for concert announcements, record releases and interviews with the artists and this was before MTV, muchmusic and the internet there was a time when this was your only source
I sent off for 'America Strikes Back' too. It wasn't as good as the 'Sounds Heavy Metal Album' that they offered before that (late '79 ?). I bought the Tygers of Pan Tang single, which I still have somewhere. I see the news that Yes were adding the 2 members of the Buggles to their line up made the news page.
So strange, but familiar, looking at this artifact. I had forgotten that Sounds tried to cater for a wide range of music cults and tastes. I suppose being 18 at the time I just ignored all the stuff that I didn't resonate with. Nice to see Totale's Turns at No 1 in the alternative album chart btw. I always used to enjoy the letters and the banter between members of the different youth cults and I also remember Gary Bushell being slagged off by many. Didn't he exercise his right to reply a few times? Just incredible how many good gigs it was possible to go to, although many of us, including me,. were on the dole 😄
I remember a reply by Garry to a letter by Mark E Smith. He called the Fall ineffectual manchester hippies. I did like his reviews, they were always good value. Dave McCulloch had been a big Fall fan for the first two albums but he was lukewarm about Totale's Turns and turned totally against them after Plastic Man and Totally Wired. He did that with every band after it looked like they could become more popular. Good writer though. I liked seeing the Witchfynde advert. That album was great, I'll have to play it later.
@@craiggerrard5117 I love Totale's turns. 'You call yourselves entertainers'? I also love the first two albums, though I went off them a bit later in '83 when the disappointing 'Perverted by Language' came out. As for Sounds, I agree with you about the two writers, though it was a long time ago! But Gary Bushell certainly loved to wind people up. The NME was more of a student paper, though I would sometimes buy the two together.
@ I honestly can’t remember them selling records. We had a couple of excellent record shops where I lived, they used to have those little kiosks with headphones in and you used to pick a 45 you wanted to listen to and they’d pop it on for you. Many a happy hour spent there 😃
I remeber buying Happy Trails by Quicksilver Messenger Service from there. I was probably only buying it because I thought it made me look obscure and knowledegable or something equally snobbish. I don't think Boots was the right place to impress anybody with this though.😁
