Fun fact: Draken International, Private Adversary contractor still fly Ex New Zealand Airforce A4s, fully upgraded, for the US military services. A testament to how well it does in a turning fight even against the current generation of jets.
another fun fact, the Australian navy A4G depicted here may have been one of the ones purchased by the RNZAF and upgraded to A4K 'kahu' model .... then decommissioned by an ugly hippy witch Prime Minister and eventually sold to Drakken .... all the single seat A4ks obtained by Drakken are all former A4Gs 😎
The A4 is a deceptively good dog fighter. It might be an "attack" aircraft by name but it is a dog fighter in spirt. There is a reason the Navy used the A4 at top gun. It's really freaking good.
Growling Sidewinder do you know there's a radar auto acquisition mode on the f-5 as well as a lead computing gunsight? Just I haven't seen you try and use it yet.
A-4E is such a fun plane to fly... I keep putting a server room out there with 10 A4s with missiles and guns for dogfighting, only had a few takers but the laughter and smiles are great!! Really a pilots game rather than tech.
I posted this vid in the “Friends of the RNZAF/RAN A4 Skyhawk” page & a former RNZAF member said the following “This looks very reminiscent of many of the Kiwi A4 v F5 dogfights fought out of Butterworth thru the 80s-90s. This one doesn’t appear to have a hard deck. Reminds me of a similar ‘no holds barred’ dual near the Thai border at a time when the F5s were flying real CT missions. Of course nobody would ever break the deck, but there were some pilots who would never give up either. The two aircraft were closely matched but the A4 had an edge when the fight slowed down and in rolling scissors.”
That's cool! I honestly would have thought the F-5 would win in most circumstances with pilots of equal skill. But that's just based on intuition and the fact one had "F" in its name and the other has an "A".
4:20 That rolling scissors was epic, but he was kinda given the kill when you couldn’t turn, after he rolled out. I’m not sure if this would work, but you could try and pull hard up, or hit the deck, it might counteract the advantage the Skyhawk has with regards to maneuverability
Jambo! Keep em' flying, even if you have to 3-d print the spare parts yourselves. Convince Northrop that the Tiger isn't anywhere near a natural death, and the may yet revive the TigerSHARK, but under the more modest desigination of the "F5 G", as it should have been in the beginning.
@@kbreezy004 i think he meant that kenya has. We also have quite a lot modernized f5 with bvr capability on Brazil. Very cost/effective plane for non warmonger countrys
I saw the Blue Angels perform in A-4s in the early 1980s. They did stunts all over town the day before an air show at the local airport. So much fun to watch!
Hey GS, try using the lead computing sight, it helps a lot at situations where the target is right in front of you and is turning. Overall, nice video! I’m glad you’re making more videos about the F5E-II, this module certainly deserves way more attention. I think it is my favorite in terms of flight model. It can do any maneuver while still not limiting your input whatsoever, unlike the F18 that feels like someone else is controlling the stick.
Man, this was a match I wondered about for some time even before you did the F14 vs videos beforehand.. And damn, this was way cooler than I thought it'd be.. From 4:14 to 4:32, the way the camera rolls is so damned cinematic, the A4 pulverizing the ground in round 2 was just.. So.. Good, to the eyes.. As always, a great watch man! 👌👌👌
I agree! I think the Gen 3 fighters are the most interesting to watch dogfighting as it seemed like they were actually still designed with gunfights as a primary design consideration. Gen 4 fighters are still really interesting, but it's more about the utilization of missiles. Still interesting, but different. 🙂
Two of my favourite light attack aircraft as a kid. Dude, this was like watching Santa and Spiderman throw hands in an alley, kinda traumatic. Cool to watch, though.
Well, that’s pretty easy. One is an attack aircraft while the other is a fighter. I would bet my money on the fighter any day. I have flown a full sized F-5 simulator and been behind the stick of an A-4.
I caught that in the video with the doors opening for the guns. I never have noticed that on the F5. That gives it like a mafia feel to it. Wow :) If he was carrying so much extra speed at the top of the circle in round 3 I wonder if he shouldnt have carried it more into the vertical?
A novice observation.. if you have a aircraft that does not turn well, use it as an energy fighter. Get in, get out, go vertical. The reason the (Actual Pilot) in Mirage went vertical (in earlier video) at merge is to gain altitude to trade for turn speed. Actually I would recommend going vertical on merge for all gun fights. It gives you more options. BTW.. I just subbed and belled. :)
A bit of a different take on the fight at 10:00 Even though the A-4 is a little more nose high, the paths of the fighters describe a "plane" - essentially a flat disc - tilted up about 30 degrees above the horizon. At time 10:48, the A-4 is losing what is a pure position fight, as the F-5 has gotten inside the turn. The A-4, with an energy advantage (speed), needs to get "out of plane" with a higher nose position to avoid the snap shot. Instead, he digs back down (10:52) into the F-5, thereby staying "in plane" and giving the F-5 a planform to shoot. Instead of digging nose low, he should have gone nose up, getting "out of plane" - while at least providing a "knife edge" shot and getting him above the plane of the bullet stream. At that point, he had a 50 knot advantage, which would have been apparent due to the angles the F-5 generated, which had to be at the cost of energy. It was an opportunity to transition from a position fight the A-4 was losing, to an energy fight it could win. At the snap shot/overshoot, the F-5 is at 190 kias. An F-5 at that speed is done climbing for the most part. An A-4, 45 kts faster can still go up to start a rolling scissors. If the A-4 had gone up just prior to the snap shot, the F-5 would have been committed nose low due to it's low airspeed. Generally, I think an A-4 in a rolling scissors has an advantage over an F-5, especially if it starts with this kind of (total) energy advantage.... 40 knots (kinetic) + altitude (potential). Interestingly, this fight tended to stay in a single plane, rather than generating out of plane maneuvering when there was a fighter with an energy advantage. It seemed both fighters had an inclination to put the lift vector right on the other one, and that tends to keep the fight in a plane. "Using the vertical" is really the ability to escape, vertically, from a plane of motion using your energy advantage, when the opponent doesn't have the energy to do so; rather than just pulling nose high if the other guy can as well. An A-4 Vs. F-5 is a fun fight!
Great idea, me like. 🙌 to Longshoot. And yes two suprices. I dont know why but F5 is hot. Oboy i wish that the big "AA" could apear in DCS. Great show.
