See, this movie has a VIBE... aaaand that vibe is EXTREMELY disturbing. Not only did Jiggy basically ASSAULT a woman, but Picollo did the same thing to his WIFE, and his DAUGHTER. That last scene about 'abuse positivity' made everyone in the room go silent and cover their mouths. Coming from personal experience, that scene was SCARY.
I saw the stage show back in the 60's when I was very young. Performed by our very excellent light operatic society. I thought it was magical, perhaps you have no imagination and a corrupt mind, it was written in far more innocent times.
I've always loved this movie, first saw it when I was a young boy and fell in love with a very young Shirley Jones. The song "If I Loved You " is a deeply moving and lovely ballad filled with wondering about love. I highly recommend this old musical, it's reminiscent of a bygone time when actual love songs were written and sung.
@@thecornerkid402 I can imagine that. At least you made a forty-minute video about it, which was very entertaining and hopefully made it worth the agony!
It's a fable. It's musical. Beautiful music. Beautiful story. ( See earlier mention of fable), somewhat of a happy ending (see fable again). Songs that have been sung since the opening and will continue to be sung as this score is considered a classic of musical theater. It has been reprised many many times and will continue to do so. Might I suggest some coffee and view again as something that is not factual.
Well, the story is based on a much older play, previously non musically filmed by Fritz Lang (the proverbial....uhm, demanding....extremely talented and influential German director). The music/ songs of course they're great......taken in it's time it's all quite revolutionary.....and nah of course it's not supposed to reflect current values and morals. Then again - are we gonna censor- chide every western Hollywood ever made because of the way they portrayed the "glorious(?)" west? Every blackface musical ? Rock Hudson for playing the world greatest heterosexual lover ? Times change, morals change, movies change. And Phil Spector....He Hit Me (and it Felt like a Kiss). yup masochism.....it's a thing.

What exactly is beautiful about the story?

I was in this show when I was 14. It's soooo cringe.

@@SpamtonHasJaundice that would require watching it.
I like some of the songs but I've never liked the movie or the story.
