Crystal Wood Spirit Walking Stick making
Вставка

- I made another walking stick build, but this one has a citrine crystal embedded into the top just behind the wood spirit carving. Also included is a paracord handle and added some wood burning details into the walking stick. The wood was very light in color so it was finished with a dark walnut Danish oil and added 3 coats of polyurethane finish. Hope you enjoy the process and let me know in the comment section what you thought of the carving.
Thanks for watching.
So far the best video I've seen. Thorough step by step, easily understood discription, of how to work on each part of the stick.
I was hoping to find such a video as this, but almost quit looking. This was great - very helpful. Thanks for talking like an adult without endless time spent (wasted) on obvious things. Refreshing.
Awesome to hear, glad the video worked for you. Your comment made my day. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
Great job. My aunt used to make wood spirits. Our shop just started making walking sticks and canes we have not done many carvings. Thanks for sharing.
nice, glad you enjoyed the video! Check out some of my other walking stick videos and let me know what you think! Thanks for watching
Awsome work
Thank you!
Very nice. I like working with crystals and walkingsticks.
Thanks! Yes this one was different from my standard sticks, but it turned out great. I just recently got 2 crystals and plan on carving them into more walking sticks soon
That is brilliant mate
Thank you!!
That spoke shaver sure works better than my Buck 110.
Once I spent some time filing down the plate and sharpening the blade it works pretty good. But straight from the store I was frustrated with it. Thanks for watching
@@JasonHedrich My pleasure!
Really a fantastic job. What a nice inspiration. 🤩🤩
Thank you very much!
Just started making sticks, 2 so far, learnt a lot from this vid so Thanks.. great looking Walking stick, Thanks for sharing, Subscribed
Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for taking the time to comment!
I have a stick and a crystal I would like you to work on for me
@@brandonduplantis1627 everything is possible... where are you located?

@@brandonduplantis1627 might be a little pricey shipping stuff from here in Montreal, Canada 😀
Well done. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed the build. It was a fun project
@@JasonHedrich loved the crystal. I’m just starting to get into this and as someone who already loves crystals I am definitely going to experiment with this. What sort of adhesive did you use to attach it?
@@robertblackmore703 yes, it was a challenge as it was such an irregular shape but I took my time and eventually made the wood conform to the shape. I used 5minute epoxy and it has held up great. With all the edges and faces, there was plenty of surface area to hold it all together.
@@JasonHedrich thank you again for your advice and for sharing your skill, which is considerable. I really appreciate the input. Best of luck on your future endeavors. Sincerely. 🙏🏻
Hello!
Very nice 👌 👍
Thank you!
A gorgeous work of art Jason.
I would love to carve like you. What must-have tools do you recommend to the woodcarving newbie?
Thank you very much. I started with just a carving knife, one chisel and a hand saw. The spokeshave really helps to shape the stick, and those you can get used or from a big box stores. Hope that helps
Y haces magia con eso ho que espuro adorno se mira bien
Thank you for your kind words! I appreciate it
I think you should add Walking stick / "staff" to the title because it helps with the algorithm, I've searched for this type of video and wasn't satisfied with the results. UA-cam recommended this, so found it by chance.
That's a good point, thank you! Glad you did finally found it and hope you enjoyed it
So awesome man. Really love the videos. I'm new to this and want to get into a new hobby. Subscribed
That’s great to hear! Glad you enjoyed the videos. Thank you
a lot of this build is pretty straight forward but would have liked you to film the gluing/epoxy of the crystal since that part is a bit more unique. would have been nice to see that process in more detail. still liked/subbed
I’ll make note for next time. The glue up wasn’t all that complex… seeing I took the time to match the wood to the crystals shape, I just applied 2part epoxy and held the crystal in place with tape until it dried. I’ve seen some attached with thin copper wire as well, those look good too… maybe the next one. Thanks for watching
@@JasonHedrich what epoxy did you use?
@@tanisbrisingr9919 I used a 2 part, 5 minute epoxy.
I love your work bro👍☘️ I’m trying a staff based on this vid right now. But I’m not doing the crystal.
Thanks from Steve in Belfast eh!😂👍
Thanks so much! Good luck with your build… can’t wait to see how it turns out.
Some sawdust and glue will fill in the holes from the crystal. Use like plaster and sand back.
Yes that could work. The epoxy did fill most of the space so the fit was fairly seamless but good tip nonetheless
@@JasonHedrich I'm suggesting this not in place of the epoxy but so that the crystal looks more like it's growing out of the staff.
I would have done the wrap with a tan colored leather> With time it will take on a patina of its own.
I’ve been thinking of doing a leather wrap… possibly on one soon. Thanks
I have a stick in a crystal I would like you to work on
Great project and results, think I would like to try it. What is the name, brand and how to locate the large chisel you used after marking the stop cuts? Thanks and keep the projects coming.
Thank you very much. The chisel is a Pfeil, the type was a 3/30 and I purchased it here in Montreal at “Langevin & Forest” which is a wood supply store, they have a great website so you’ll be able to find them there. Thanks for watching

Brilliant video, what wood is it your using?
Thank you
Thanks for the comments! Not sure on the wood… I find them already down in the forest, usually no bark or leaves left so I can’t tell what type it is… this one was very light wood, which is why I decided to stain it. Fun build overall and the client was happy so that’s what counts.
I didn't notice you doing any sanding... when I make a walking stick I have to sand it like crazy, how do you not have to sand your sticks?
oh no, there are hours of sanding... but it is rather boring to make the viewers watch me sand so I cut it out of the videos. Thanks for watching :) I'll try and explain it more in the next ones
@@JasonHedrich lol... ok.. I understand...I was hoping for a shortcut...
@@grassyknoll4702 I've found that taking shortcuts in woodworking only makes firewood :)
@@JasonHedrich great point!
What kind of glue do you use to glue the stone to the wood? I'm looking for something odorless. Ideally natural. Thanks
I use a 2 part epoxy... Probably not the natural adhesive you are looking for. I have seen others use thin copper wire to mechanically tie the stone to the stick... That might work for you
How can I order a tree spirit walking stick from you?
Thank you very much for the interest, please write to me at jhedrich73@gmail.com and we can discuss this further
Have you tried driftwood for a walking stick before?
No, not yet. Haven’t found a piece of driftwood that would work… I’ll keep looking
I got a driftwood stick and need to reinforce the areas where the cracks are at got anything that could be of use horizontal and up and down
@@soranightstorm9262 I've found that adding epoxy works well as it gets in deep and fills all the void. You can color it and it makes a nice addition to the sticks
Hey great video and carving! What type of draw knife is that you're using to remove bark? Or is it some type of plane? I've never seen one like it. Thanks a lot and keep up with the videos!
At the start of the video, to take the bark off I used a spokeshave, made by Stanley. Works well to remove bark and to trim down sections of walking sticks. Hope that helps.
@@JasonHedrich great, thanks a lot, just what I need!

Such a great and informative video. I could never be as good as you but it gives me some ideas to start . Thank You So Much !
What type of wood is this stick made from? It turned out fantastic………
thank you very much, yes I think it came out very well. I'm not sure the type of wood, I found it in the forest so I'm not sure. It was a hard wood so maybe ash or maple
@@JasonHedrich BASS WOOD? There seems to be no grain
@@rossandersen942 not sure, basswood carves a bit easier than this piece did. But maybe…
Where did you get that wood carfing tool at the beginning of this video?
That’s a spokeshave, I think I got that one at a big box store. But you can buy them online as well.
@Jason Hedrich awesome, thank you
What kind of dermal is good for carving?
Thanks
Rex
Rex Carr, I think you are referring to a Dremel? If so, to start, you can go with any rotary tool and see if it works for you. The Dremel 4000 is a great tool for around $120CAN and can definately get you into the thick of it. If, and when you want to upgrade, FOREDOM has some beautiful, high end tools with more power but will set you back a little bit more in cash.
wish u could work on a beautiful stick I found and recreate this masterpiece for me
Thank you very much! Glad that you enjoyed the video!
Where do I get a microplane like yours?
I got mine at Langevin & Forets here in Montreal. They also do shipping so they might be able to get it out to you. The wooden support I made out of a scrap piece of cedar 2x4
Did you dry the wood first
yes, always let the wood dry before carving it... otherwise the wood can check and crack right through your carving
@@JasonHedrich thank you
@@shawbriggs6469 happy to help
I do not know my wood types very well. What kind of wood is it?
I’m not 100% sure either. I found the stick in the forest, the bark was off and no leaves so a bit tough to say what it was… it came out nice however
@@JasonHedrich That it did.
