The echo of the electric saws in the background gives it an ominous feel to it. One thing I’ll admit, even though it’s sad that it’s going, at least it isn’t being allowed to rot. They’re doing it right; sell off what you can and scrap the rest.
This is so sad to me. Went to my first wings game in second grade, my dad has come home from work and surprised my mom, brother, and I with jerseys and tickets. That night just flashed before my eyes. Simpler times. All just memories now :/
During the 80's and into the 90's....I probably saw over 700 games at the "Joe" having had season tickets. Of course....I also remember my family having season tickets in the 70's for the Red Wings and going to games at the old Olympia Stadium. You might say....I'm on my third building now. LOL
Nothing like the feel of an old school arena. The new ones have better amenities but the old ones have a certain character. Thanks for posting another great vid!! Merry Christmas!!!
I worked for a guy who contracted for demos, we usually stripped theaters but occasionally did larger venues like this. I remember we were one of several companies that took out the seats rails and carpets in the old Kingdome. It was one of my first jobs as a young man and was awed by the place, they later went on to imploded the building. Yes this triggered that old memory, LOL. Cool place dude, it's always a shame to see these historic places that have so many good vibes associated with it get torn down but that's progress I guess. Glad you guys get there before it's totally gone. Hey Merry Christmas all! :)
Should've worn suit pants, shirt, tie, fluorescent vest, hard hat and carried a clip board and you could've gone anywhere without having to sneak around. Edit: Disregard that it seems one of the contractors or a stadium employee was cool enough to give you a tour!
I went to one of the final two games there... I've been to about 4 at the Joe and 2 at little Caesars arena. The Joe had a crazy electrifying vibe. Something about being in that building made every game seem 10x better even if the game itself was a dumpster fire. LCA is a great arena but will never replace the feeling of walking up the two story steps and staring at the Joe Louis arena sign. Too pass through those doors knowing what has been accomplished in that arena during its lifetime. For me it brought anxiety. A good type of anxiety. Brings a tear to my eye.
TML fan here. As A kid I used to work at Maple Leaf Gardens selling popcorn and Coke and peanuts. This brought back some awesome memories of all the hidden corners the public never see. I loved The Joe. And the best of all the old arenas was Chicago stadium. I was there too.
I was there for five days as a kid when my Dad attended General Assembly for the Presbyterian Church of the USA back in gulp...1980. I wandered the corridors and ramps and checked out the closed concession stands and etc. I can’t imagine a 9 year old wandering around like that now. A good memory.
I am so stoked! RnK All Day was in my town, at JLA!!! You did a fantastic job on this vid. Instant favorite. I've been at the Joe when it was rockin' and it was quite a thrill. Great job!!!
Still a nice looking building, though there were lots of bottlenecks in those single-concourse arenas. Parking issues clear up quickly when you have an orderly exit that a single-concourse building just doesn’t offer. Plus the views from box level were kind of lousy. And did they maintain the roof at all??? That’s some next-level neglect.
They could NOT have stayed another 20, tf?? I worked there during its final year and walking around back stage during the ohl farewell to the joe, the whole lower bowl was cracking and falling apart literally. They metal stairs in place were so shotty. They desperately needed this move into LCA
When they're walking around the concourse areas take a look at the floor. Even where there aren't puddles there are stains on the flooring and concrete where other puddles have been. Place leaks like a sieve, and that really cuts the lifespan of a structure like that because the roofing and wall iron rots right along with the reinforcement in the concrete.

I’m an oiler fan in Edmonton (don’t laugh) and I agree that the old buildings carry something special. The joe and northlands were both very special buildings and even though both cities have new beautiful buildings you ca feel the difference when you walk into the rink in Edmonton.

Its always awesome to hear demo saws in the morning, glad you were able to get in bro, good look at somethin ive only got to drive past before it falls in on itself. Stay safe n till next time, PEACE!
For some reason from viewing games that the Joe Lewis Arena always looked older than it actually is. Still the best days of the franchise happened there starting in the late 1990's led by Steve Yzerman. It's now in a fancy arena but the team is so bad and really rebuilding now. Sounds like I'll need to prepare for my own documentation of the Saddledome in Calgary.
I went to Pontiac in '97 or '98 when that was abandoned. The security guard was cool, said just take your pictures and leave. The turf was still on but some sections were removed. Crazy seeing it and thinking about all those Thanksgiving day football games. Stirred up some great memories but sad at the same time.
@@Cowtipper4957 You're right, it's been years since I thought about it. My pictures are date stamped, it was '98, so the Lions still had several years left at Pontiac. It wasn't abandoned at that point. But it was definitely on its way out to be used for misc events. It was cool to see Pontiac and think about all those great childhood memories of Thanksgiving day football. 🏈
As a Coyotes fan I was raised in a family full of red wings fans so I grew up watching all the games they had and everything they are my second team but I'm truly sad that they closed this iconic structure before I could see a Coyotes vs red wings game there
I have so many memories of Joe Louis. As a Leafs fan I watched so many more playoff red wings games growing up. Even went to a couple Leafs vs Wings games and one where they played LA.........I remember after their first Cup win at the Joe the confetti poured down and “Oh What a night” by Frankie Valli blasted out of the speakers. Its too bad my family wasn’t Wings fans as I’d have many more fond hockey memories from childhood........... At least I have the Spitfires I guess.
Never been here but I know what it's like to have a landmark filled with memories get demolished. Here in Washington State for us it was The King Dome. Seattle Mariners. My childhood was spent there watching Mariners games. They televised its demolition. A lot of people were crying as it was coming down. This reminds me of that and reading through comments from people who have been here and had great memories, I sympathize.
So many good memories here. When I was a kid my dad got tickets to the games through work, us Steele on zug island. We would go to all the home games. And even the practices. I still have all the pucks I got too! So many good memories there.

The Joe was a great arena for concerts too. The first band to ever play there was Rush on the Permanent Waves Tour on Feb 19, 1980. The last was Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan.

Awesome new vid Rob! Loving the abandoned arenas! The arena definitely saw it’s fair share of memories! Have a good one!
I’m an oiler fan in Edmonton (don’t laugh) and I agree that the old buildings carry something special. The joe and northlands were both very special buildings and even though both cities have new beautiful buildings you ca feel the difference when you walk into the rink in Edmonton.
Damn I’m old. I remember when they moved to the Joe from the old Olympia stadium. Lots of good times at the Joe.
We have a Joe Louis (Jos Louis) in Quebec, Canada but it's a chocolate covered round/flat chocolate snack cake with a really sweet frosting in the middle. LOL Nothing better than stealth urbexing! Loved this video. You and Josh make a great team. Hope to see you guys collaborating more in the future. Merry Xmas and New Year to the both of you, and to all the RnK and Josh fans out there too! Let's wish it's a good year for us all.
And we pronounce it Joe Louie
Thanks for the fabulous video! Merry Christmas to you and your family ❤️🎄
They need to bring the red wings goal horn over to little Ceasar arena cause that pre recorded horn is horrible .
It isnt loud enough they need a New one
I’m a lifelong Wings fan and this was awesome to watch. Totally jealous! I was sad to see The Joe go, but glad it wasn’t left to rot and decay...
As a Red Wings fan that has never been to the Joe- this makes me a bit sad. Would love to do exploring here like this, very great video!
The Joe brings back plenty of memories, I enjoyed every game I went to there.
The large open vip area was called the legends club and it was the most dope hockey experience ever.
I miss Joe Louis Arena it was the best
Bob Probert and Marty Mcsorley back in the days were the brawlers. Great video man!
McSorley was a chickenshit punk. Bobby and Joey took care of him.
Its always awesome to hear demo saws in the morning, glad you were able to get in bro, good look at somethin ive only got to drive past before it falls in on itself. Stay safe n till next time, PEACE!
So cool you could document this. Thanks RnK all day!
Ford Field wasnt built until 2002.
My high school won a state title in 2000 and played the championship game at the Pontiac Silverdome.
It wasnt always for hockey only. I saw PRINCE in concert twice here, Disneys Ice Capades, NWA...the list goes on and on
As a Coyotes fan I was raised in a family full of red wings fans so I grew up watching all the games they had and everything they are my second team but I'm truly sad that they closed this iconic structure before I could see a Coyotes vs red wings game there
I have so many memories of Joe Louis.
The commentary on this was nothing short of brutal.
very cool to see Bro, thanks for the tour, Merry Christmas Robb to you ,Kristy and your families
sad to see this i lived in monroe michgain 17 years ago and Joe Louis was open
myranda wilkins general custer
myranda wilkins it was interesting when they got to the top and all the guys were laying on the floor.
Michigan girl. So many games, events and concerts there, and I’m old as dirt! Thank you for this view.
The Joe was amazing! Even the nose bleeds seats were not that bad! This gave me chills!
Great video. Merry Christmas
i remember seeing stone cold drive a zomboni to the ring at the joe!
So many good memories here. When I was a kid my dad got tickets to the games through work, us Steele on zug island. We would go to all the home games. And even the practices. I still have all the pucks I got too! So many good memories there.
Wow so much energy, events and tales in this place. Some buildings should never be allowed to die.
Exactly like THE JOE!
The goal horn now sounds different than the one back in Joe Louis
What a remarkable soundtrack to go out on. Emblematic of not only the demise of the Joe but that of progress for the sake of profit at any cost.
I live right by there, would have loved to meet you guys if you are still in Detroit. There are too many abandoned places in this city, you guys will enjoy it.. just be careful.
As a Wings fan in California, this video let's me see what our old stadium looked like from the POV of a fan which I'll never get to experience. Thanks man.
Love the entro Robb. WOW! I’m kind of liking those Ominous sounds of those saws cutting up a piece of history.
As a sports fan, I’m sure there are many broken hearts out there.
What are the odds? You UrbEx pros find each other in the same places?
WOOHOOZIES!!! You guys got yourselves a guide. Lol.
Very cool looking bar. Amazing woodwork.
Have an awesome holiday.
Still Obsessed....pr
What a cool explore!
So much history in that building.
I live in Michigan I've been there numerous times sad to see it go
The Joe was a great arena for concerts too. The first band to ever play there was Rush on the Permanent Waves Tour on Feb 19, 1980.
The last was Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan.
1:56 I remember my first NHL game at the Joe, and I remember walking through those sorts of curtains. I’d never seen an arena that big. Glad to have had those memories at the Joe.
One of the most legendary arenas in hockey it is a massive shame that it came to an end, imagine how the legends feel...Fedorov, Yzerman, Shanahan about the old arena gone
Fedorov wouldn't give a shit about it
Love your channel Merry Christmas to you, Kristie
Great video thank you 👍👍
i’ve gone to that arena since i was a little kid, it’s always been packed. it’s weird to watch guys walk through it as the “abandoned” arena
As a Blues fan I despise the Red Wings but the Joe was a classic arena.
😭 The memories. I’m just imagining the long lines for the bathrooms and the smell of lil Caesar’s deep dish omg
Can you do the same thing in the Colisée Pepsi? The abandoned Quebec nordiques arena.
Demolition starts in may so in the meantime it’s empty no employees
I'm pretty sure it was already replaced with "Centre Vidéotron." I went to Quebec City a few months ago and didn't see Colisée Pepsi
@@TheVCRKing Centre Vidéotron was built right next to Colisée Pepsi before it gets demolished in may, after the land will most likely be used as extra parking
The VCR King I think they are around a hundred feet apart
