There are a lot of things to pay attention to in order to stay safe while sleeping in your vehicle. Like you can see living in a vehicle is not all sunshine and rainbows. There are many rules, regulations and you will have to get creative. I know that some folks won’t agree with me and will tell me to park in places that are legal but the truth is that in many counties and towns living in a vehicle is illegal so, no, I will not comply. Because of this reason I do get tickets sometimes and I thought that it was a good idea to share my experience to hopefully help others to navigate this broken system. Hi Lidia 👋 I was born and raise in California, but I just had it. I still love California but the laws and regulations killed me, I moved out to Georgia and love it. I only pay for my vehicle registration yearly on $20 dollars. 1 acre of land and 5 bedroom and 3 restroom. And have animals and fruit trees, I love the change. Bought my house $340,000. I suggest move out of that crazy state things are getting worse for the people out there. We'll. GOD bless you always in everything u do out there.

@moonmilkman5157, true u should feel free sleeping were u want to sleep but the problem i have living in a Van or Car is that what if the Vehicles breaks down depending on what the issue is do u have enough money to pay for it plus as you get older your body will age and cannot put an orthopedic bed in your Van or Car; another thing is people u have no idea who is nice or who is bad. u may run across a career criminal who may be nice but is Wolf in disguise and dealing with extreme heat or if your in the North extreme cold. this is where a house has the advantages. you have to go to some public place to wash your body.

What makes me upset is that nothing is being done about the cost of living skyrocketing while the wages stay the same. Yet it's a "problem" when people choose to live in a vehicle because they can't afford $2000 rent. Or because they don't want to be a slave to their rent or their debt! You can't do nothing about the cost of living and then also make it illegal to be homeless. On a more positive but trivial note, that butterfly bikini is so pretty and unique lol. I love it

When I read the comments from the USA, then I'm glad to live in Europe, ok I live in Germany, where the weather annoys me and in winter, but luckily I can go where the sun shines in winter. We are caught up in the social network here. I'm glad we have that here. Of course there are still people who suffer from poverty or are homeless because they have alcohol or drug problems or can't cope with the obligations of life or simply don't want to leave Berlin, for example, but can no longer afford an apartment there. Of course, I also think that some social benefits are misused, such as the high child benefit would be better invested in better free education with modern, future-oriented schools. I know that Americans don't want that, they are brought up very differently from an early age than Europeans.Germany offers a comprehensive social benefits system designed to support individuals in various life situations:
Health Insurance: Mandatory for all residents, covering medical expenses including doctor visits, hospital stays, and medications.
Unemployment Benefits: Provides financial support based on previous income for those who lose their jobs. Long-term unemployed individuals can receive Bürgergeld (formerly known as Hartz IV).
Child Benefits: Monthly payments to families for each child to help with the costs of raising children.
Parental Allowance: Financial support for parents who stay home to care for a newborn, compensating for lost income.
Housing Allowance: Assistance for low-income individuals to help cover rental costs.
Social Assistance: Support for those unable to support themselves, including elderly and disabled individuals.
Long-term Care Insurance: Provides support for individuals who need long-term care due to age or illness.
Pensions: Workers contribute to a pension system and receive monthly payments upon retirement.

I only did it for a year and a half, but used to sleep at the chain mechanic shops a lot. I'd get free WiFi, and if anyone ever questioned it, which they didn't, I'd say I was traveling and having car issues, waiting for them to open up. The cops can't do anything when you're on private property unless the business calls. Make sure they don't have anything posted, though.
Twice, I had people try to enter my vehicle after I fell asleep with the doors unlocked. That was scary af. 10 years is a long time to be in that cycle, Lidia. It's only get harder, too, especially when you're in an obvious camper van. Hit up the Long Beach boat auction. You get a liveaboard sailboat for as low as $400 and just rent a slip. That way, you have an address and you're secure.

Talk about hypocrisy when residents complain about the homeless living on a street, yet also take issue when they’re in an enclosed vehicle that they own. I agree, if someone is not littering or loitering they shouldn’t be harassed. People need to quit being so selfish and have empathy for others who may be struggling. We own our private properties but city roads should belong to everyone. As long as the vanner isn’t causing any trouble, leave them alone. Having their vehicle towed only causes a greater issue for all. I live across the street from a city park and have seen many vanners park there for a night. I always bring them food or offer items I no longer need. If only more people would step up and do the same.

    • @onthethrottle7104
      @onthethrottle7104 Місяць тому +3

I don't think it hypocrisy, residents don't like either one, meaning they don't like people living on their streets or in a van in their neighborhood. We homeowners get penalized by homeless because our home values decline and we can't sell our homes when a would be buyer can see there are homeless everywhere around the home you worked hard for and there are crappy looking vehicles with people living in them or just people living on the streets. Also, people living in a vehicle or on the streets need to poop and pee, and that stuff ends up around our homes. Then their trash ends up around the neighborhood. Noise also starts up, and I can go on and on. Today's generation is about no job and living off of everyone else dime and then they complain when they are being held accountable. Get a job, work hard, save up and get an apartment or live with roommates to get by. Is it tough, maybe. But that's the whole point about working hard to get your own condo or home some day, it doesn't happen overnight so don't expect it to happen over night, put some effort into it. A person used to be able to go down to a beach in California and it was clean and there were very few homeless that nastyied up the place. A family could feel safe and get a sense of how amazing and clean the country was. Everyone was respectful of the laws and each other. Not any more, it's full of filth and it's disgusting with trash, people and their crap strewn out all over, stink and nasty. This all stems from the attitude, "why can't I just live here in the streets or in a park or on a street." Stop fighting everyone because you want to live on the their street where they pay a huge amount of taxes and home fees and they work their ass off while you sit around in your bus all day! This isn't really meant for you Therealbe, I'm just replying since you mentioned hypocrisy with people that own homes. Sorry I don't mean to offend you at all.

I long for the 80s when everything even the beaches was okay to park overnight. I finally left California a couple years ago because of all the restrictions. When I first moved to San Diego in the 80s you could camp overnight on Fiesta island and along the beaches and no one bothered you. The last few years I had to work a graveyard shift and try to sleep in the daytime to survive. I hear now they are clearing out the homeless from everywhere so stay safe out there. I imagine things are going to get harder to live like you do again.

I agree w/you Lidia. You are living a nice, clean and quiet life. Your van is spotless, probably cleaner than some houses. What difference does it make if you are parked and sleeping in your van w/the windows covered, or parked and visiting someones apartment, house, or place of business, you're not bothering anyone. You're also nice and brighten up people's day as you travel, you are a ray of sunshine in an often gloomy world, what could be better than that?

Hey Lydia, I am a 33 yo living in my 22ft Coachmen Catalina Sport (95), and appreciate your vlog. I am based in Coeur d'Alene ID currently and have lots of experience stealth camping. I agree with you on your points, especially giving other stealth car campers (or really for all overnight parking situations) their courtesy space by not parking nearby whenever possible. As for the national forests and public lands, I recommend that people get the federal public lands "Annual Pass", as it enables free parking in all national forests, BLM lands, DNR and more. In WA state, where I have the most experience, there are many state parks that allow 14 day stays; the state parks in WA are nice since you can legally toke up at your campsite (given you are not in sight of minors). Anyways, wishing you all the best 💚

I have to be honest I’m very torn on this one. Would I want a bunch of people living right outside my house? And on the other hand, people should be allowed to travel freely and pull over in their vehicles to sleep. I think cities should designate parking zones for long-term van dwellers.

    • @The.Hawaiian.Kingdom
      @The.Hawaiian.Kingdom Місяць тому +13

A designated place would be nice, but it creates a liability for the state if people get hurt or ra^ed on those premises.
I live near a Walmart that stopped allowing people to park there overnight & that resulted in people who tried to go there but were kicked out parking in my neighborhood instead. It actually worked out great for us, there were no home invasions or break ins or car thefts because there were people out on the street sleeping in vehicles outside our houses… I felt WAY safer with them there. There was an older man who parked on the corner in his van for around 2 years, never moved (aside from when he had to leave to restock), never bothered anyone… he ended up passing away in his van and that obviously got the attention of police as to people parking in my little neighborhood and the cops started coming around kicking them out. I miss them being parked out here.
Obviously if there’s people who are trashing the place, that would be different, but that wasn’t our experience at all. The people who parked here would scold others if they saw someone doing that & they did that because they were thankful to us for not calling the cops on them.

I think a good law would be you cant sleep in your vehicle more than 3 consecutive days at a time in the same place. This would prevent some of the run down homeless tweaker rigs from littering up the streets. Also having designated areas that you can park would be a good idea. Moreno valley has some streets they totally tolerate Rigs and people actually live and work from them. Once the trash starts then the ticket start. As long as your mobile and not in the same place that would make sense. housing is just too expensive and something needs to be done. CA especially is making laws that make building costs go up a lot. Requiring low nox heating systems, Low power use AC and low not water heaters, fire sprinklers, increasing building codes for stuff that makes no sense, all these things make the cost of building a house $100,000 more than other states. Creating more homeless. (legit not drug using heavens) The democratic government might seem like they want to help but all they are interested in is MONEY.....Dont be fooled. They want the ticket revenue and registration cost and property tax......That is the honest truth and that is what they really want. All the other agenda they TALK about is just smoke and mirrors to get your vote.

I know it's not available for everyone in their particular areas, but should be for most ... I have a membership for KOA (Kampgrounds of America), and I swap back and forth between rest areas and those primarily, along with free national forest parks and such. There are a LOT in most states. You will spend a tad more on gas since you will move around a little avery few days so people don't get pissy with you... but I have found that works really well. I usually spend no more than 2 days in a row at the public rest stops, whatever I feel like I can afford that month at a KoA for a day or two at a time (they vary wildly across the US, but are pretty cheap throughout the Midwest especially) and national parks. Both (or at least the KoA) are nice because you will get power hookup, bathrooms and showers. If you are truly just living Van life wherever - it's pretty easy to find these things within a radius that lets you go "to town" spending less than a buck or two in gas when you want to go stock up or just have a coffee. Probably more if you're driving a gas guzzler, but regular vans just a few bucks for the 10 or 20 miles it might be.
One of my favorite spots has a KoA within the west side of city limits. A rest stop about 8 miles outside the other side of city limits, and a full service national park about 4 miles south. The park is free through the winter, and $6 a night through the spring and summer. Time limit of 10 days concurrent, but you can literally just move spots if available lol. Just some ideas to save people ticket prices. I used to be upset about the whole 'passive resistance' thing, but it's a helluva lot cheaper to just avoid the fines and not give the jerks my money! Use the parks as much as possible to get my money's worth for at least a small portion of my taxes. Some of them a super nice. Great video!

Rest areas on the interstate are good places to stay. You will find them about every 90 miles. Also Walmart parking lots are save areas

    Hey Lidia
Thank you for this video. I can’t agree more. You and all van lifers deserve respect and privacy. Thank you for telling the world to respect and protect our parking by making the site better than when you arrived. 🤩

You can always find a truckstop. Any size vehicle is cool. Plus you can get a hot shower.

A friend of mine had his vehicle towed. He was living in it. Now, he has a bike and lives in a tent, barely. We live in Waikiki.

Agree with you, so hypocritical of cities and states to ticket people living in vehicles but not folk living on the street, especially on the West Coast. Stay encouraged and strong, thank you for sharing. 🙏🏻💪🏻

I agree 100% People should be free to live in their vehicles. It makes no sense that they ticket us and force us to move from a parking spot.

No one should be homeless. It is 2024 ffs. Mankind is the only species that is expected to pay for food and shelter. We live in an upside down World. Excellent video again. You answered a lot of important questions.

I just came across this vid....yes i agree, people should be able to park where ever they want in public areas with out being fined....and with the high prices of rent for some living in their vehicle is their best option. I wouldnt say park in front of someones house, i wouldnt do that so i wouldnt want someone doing that to me, maybe ask if its ok for a night or two....i would be open to someone asking if they could park in fron of my house for a night or two so long as they didnt leave a mess.

It's crazy. You own or paying for the vehicle
It's yours. NO ONE should try to put you in more of a situation to be out on the streets. Prayers

This is the first time hearing this I never knew it was illegal to live in your vehicle and and I think you're right they should change the law. And to be honest I'm the type that I probably would never live in my vehicle
