If this wasn't cut off so short, I have no doubt it would be considered the greatest guitar solo of all time. It's easy to see where Stevie Ray Vaughan got his inspiration from. If only Jimi had stuck around longer, he was just getting started blowing our minds.
I can't believe people are doubting this is Jimi. Clean your ears out, go and listen too a few live tracks of Jimi then come back and listen again. Right from the start you can feel Jimi's spirit in the music.
Well this version of +Little Wing+ by the master himself is about ten times as beautiful and ingenious the the version of Eric. Jimi just varies the tone of his guitar all the time from beautiful mellow sound to overdriven high distortion but very often it sounds also just sweet and very beautiful . What a difference to the recorded version Jimi really sounded so much better than all the guitarists of his time and yeah he eclipses todays fellows too. Love Jimi R.I.P. Jörg Jendis
Butterfield had a three day gig there. This is from tapes of an after hours jam session! Common practice at this venue. When BB King played there the same year Clapton turned up to play! All of this occurred after the public had long gone!
Awe, those were the days at Cafe Au Go Go... Saw Paul Butterfield Blues, Richie Havens, Howlin Wolf, Ian and Sylivia, Judy Collins and many more. It was a close and personal place to be to hear those great musicians work their magic.
Gigs at Café Au Go Go, New York and jam with Mothers of Invention Frank Zappa: I thought Hendrix was great. But the very first time I saw him I had the incredible misfortune of sitting close to him at the Au Go Go and he had a whole stack of Marshalls and I was right in front of it. I was physically ill. It was so packed I couldn't escape. And, although it was great, I didn't see how anyone could inflict that kind of volume on himself, let alone other people. That particular show, he ended up taking the guitar and impaling it in the low ceiling of the club. Just walked away and left it squealing. - Jimi Hendrix - The Ultimate Experience - Johnny Black
I listened to this very recording this morning. Whilst listening, I pondered and ruminated over his passing so young. Whilst tragic, I feel he was frozen in time with his creative achievements and in some way spared the ignominy of fading and withering away like the rest of us.
"Be respected as being new, and probably a decent change or a help for the human race or whatever, instead of keep carrying the same old burdens around with you." -JH It seems as though Jimi would have fought "ignominy of fading" tooth and nail for as long as he could.
Very very few people are geniuses....Jimi was a GENIUS! To be that creative and to create a cultural shift before the age of 30, well that's pretty damn amazing. There are only a handful of these kind of people in the Arts and Sciences. In music in the modern ear certainly you can point to Elvis, Dylan, McCartney/Lennon as people who were ahead of everyone else and had a couple of semi truck loads of "it"! Jimi was there standing should to should with them.
Quite obvious that it's Jimi... As for the other musicians, since it has been mentioned in the description about the Paul Butterfield Blues Band playing I'd say that was a fair bet... This is New York 1968, Hendrix was in New York in '68 recording Electric Ladyland. Members of the Butterfield Band play on Electric Ladyland, It is well known that Hendrix would jam with anyone and then invite them along to the studio, particularly during this period... Thanks for sharing :-)
Recorded on March 17, 1968 at the Cafe Au Go-Go in New York, these half-dozen largely instrumental jams feature Jimi Hendrix playing with Paul Butterfield (vocals and harmonica), Elvin Bishop (guitar), Harvey Brooks (bass, though his name is misspelled "Marvey Brooks" on the cover), Herbie Rich (keyboards and sax), and Buddy Miles (drums).
My favorite part is probably right from 8:57 on, where it's this weird G major to A minor transition/blend type stuff going on with all sorts of bends and arpeggios and the whole thing is just going crazy on the 2nd string... badass for sure!!
Keyboards here sound like Steve Winwood (of Traffic fame), which makes sense since Jimi was jamming with him in NYC around this time. Winwood played on Jimi's album Electric Ladyland (released Oct 1968 - note "Little Wing" above is Mar 1968) on the song "Voodoo Chile." "Voodoo Chile" is the longer version of the song "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" which is the better-known version. Note the diff in the song names: "Voodoo Chile" vs. "Voodoo Child" (both songs are on Electric Ladyland). New fans must check out Jimi's "Voodoo Chile" (long version) which drips soul and kills with Jimi's guitar. Winwood is also awesome on this. A must see/hear is Winwood and Eric Clapton doing "Voodoo Chile" on UA-cam (thank you guys for an awesome "Voodoo Chile" live!) As to "Little Wing" above (thanks for the post!) it could also be Jack Casady (of Jefferson Airplane fame) on bass here. He was also jamming with Jimi at this time, and he too plays on Electric Ladyland's "Voodoo Chile" (perhaps not only because he was great on bass, but also because Noel Redding was AWOL; with a bad attitude, as the story goes). At the time Jimi is said to have wanted to do a lot of music with Winwood and Cassidy; a good choice based on "Voodoo Chile." Lucky me, I saw Jimi 4 times, including Randall's Island (with a stage pass!), Woodstock, and the Band of Gypsies New Year's Eve late show at Fillmore East (thank you Arlene for taking me to the show!). Imagine: Jimi walks on the stage with a new, all black/soul band, say's "happy new year," and kicks it! (Not that it matters, but I'm white - rock is a rainbow.)
+Charles Abrams I can definitely see er um hear Jack on bass! Winwood? I'm doubting it. fyi Barclay LP labels in early 70's, at least for the French box with AYE, AXIS, & ELL inside, said "Sun Moon & Rainbow" on it. And while Eddie Kramer was admiring it in his lap, one day in 2000, he said "I wonder who this Sun Moon & Rainbow is?"
Jimi is a legend (although he wouldnt agree on that). I think he knew when he left that he had done enough. Maybe he could've stayed yea, but it doesn't really matter imo the music he left us will forever live on, and that alone makes him immortal.
"It’s all turned full circle. I’m back right now to where I started. I’ve given this era of music everything. I still sound the same, my music’s still the same, and I can’t think of anything new to add to it in its present state…" -Jimi Hendrix: 9.5.1970
This Is Jimi Hendrix!!!! There is no doubt. Brilliant Jam. The Jury is IN! Sorry, I've been wanting to write about this for weeks and I finally found out how to get comments working again. See my reply below to Mr. Durand-Wood for more.
I can't think of many folk that could take a nice mellow jam and tear the roof off the place but Jimmi at 8:21. That was amazing! I wish it hadn't got cut off.
Winterland Arena, San Francisco, Kalifornien, am 12. Oktober 1968 (2.-Show) und Royal Albert Hall, London, England February 24, 1969 sind auch sehr gut.
I have to imagine Jimi looking out at an abjectly terrified crowd around the 8:20 mark, considering tiny size of the venue. Only one man could blow a Marshall Stack cranked to 10 through a fucking Starbucks and it be allowed.
braxton hughes its worse than you think. EH has copyrighted Jimi's "image"and works hardcore like. When they got power they asked fans to bring them their personal recordings to sell to EH. Then they hoarded them. Also right after Jimi died his apartment was raided and tapes and stuff were stolen. Plus Alan Douglas was in charge for awhile and was irresponsibly chopping up and wiping parts of the master tapes. I have no idea how many reels survive from Jimi's portable recorder

The guitar as is any instrument a paint brush or a pen some use them well some stumble and make sour notes . Hendrix Jimi turned squanked notes into majik music like was never heard before at the time To me he was like Miles Davis on the guitar Listen to the album Electric Lady land free mind trip be well
oh my Jimi !!! this is the best jam ever!!! super-thanks to whom ever recorded this and thanks to whom ever posted it ! I just want to know where the rest of the session is
I WAS LIKE 17 when I was learning how to play Little WING by HEARING THIS song and more to know I'm playing Jams of this mastery to little babies and they dance by moving their feet in bed and standing up and "jamming" :)
Does anyone know what the earliest recorded version of Jimi playing Little Wing is? I personally love this version, quite raw which makes it even better. It has treasures of licks sprinkled all throughout. Insane solo at the end in the 9th minute of the recording has all sorts of cool licks in it.
Jimi is all but a god for he was just a human. Now saying that, if God performed little wing on a strat and didn't want the building to collapse, I think it would sound something like this. Definitely the best version I've found thus far.
It is a quite (technical) good version ... also the vocals are nice - BUT way too much sax and other additional instruments / sounds ... robs the simple brilliance and deepnes of the original ...
+daryle aron your comment made me think of a flying carpet bc that would be a free fun thing to do. Imagine Jimi standing on a flying carpet playing guitar flying over his concert audience!
The arguments going on here are silly. All I know is, this is the heaviest and eeriest rendition of Little Wing I've heard, and fuck is it awesome. King Hendrix delivers, once again.
Whoops! I just googled this show. According to allmusic.com Herbie Rich is on keyboards and Harvey Brooks is on bass. Sorry for the miss-info in my prior comment.
***** you can't tell when you are listening to Jimi, when you are listening to Jimi. So my suggestion for you, is to listen to more Jimi. Then get back to us. Let us know what you found out ok.
I must say something, from a reliable source, who plays hendrix is, and the other guitar that makes this high note that sounds milder is Robby Krieger, guitarist of the doors, and besides that .......... if ........... sounds like the black winged
i heard this recording a good while ago. in my opinion it is jimi. i have listened obsessively to A LOT of his recordings, outtakes, live stuff, bootlegs etc. the deep cuts ya dig? i believe that is john mayall on the harp. could be wrong about everything though so whatever...this jam rocks no matter who it is.
Hendirx did not play guitar he was guitar he was one with his instrument. You watch him and there is no sense of effort, it just poured out of him. Many folks always wonder who the best guitar player ever was. Many many names come up but you got to then ask why is EVERYONE of them every single one of them..... compared to Hendirx? Jimi yes you were a human full of all failing as we humans are, well until you picked up your ax, then you became a god! Thanx for your brief divine visit here to share the glory...
No doubt this is Jimi his style is so unique that's what makes him a standout!!!
If this wasn't cut off so short, I have no doubt it would be considered the greatest guitar solo of all time. It's easy to see where Stevie Ray Vaughan got his inspiration from. If only Jimi had stuck around longer, he was just getting started blowing our minds.
As a Hendrix fan for 44 years, This is Jimi Hendrix, no one played the guitar at that time like him.
I can't believe people are doubting this is Jimi. Clean your ears out, go and listen too a few live tracks of Jimi then come back and listen again. Right from the start you can feel Jimi's spirit in the music.
No one plays like Jimi.
Yeah... never delete this!!!!
never delete this
I heard this on acid for the first time. It was a surreal experience, the solo at the ending blew me away
Jimi was a genius , the best guitar player ever , almost every quitar player has copied him more or less
No words there will never be another like JIMI
min 8:20 listening to this solo should be the morning prayer of every guitarist. The rest is silence
8:20 on.... Think I replayed this last part 30 times when I first heard this.

No because I don't know you I do know him and then he was gone
My favourite solo ever at the end, just pure emotion and energy! Wish it went on for longer.
Whoever it is, it's amazing. I'm glad I got to hear it.

My favorite version of the song... Jimi went in on it this night.
CAN´T STOP listen Jimi ,medicine-sounds / god bless God
couldn't have said it better. UA-cam has brought his whole library out for the world to listen. What an undiscovered gem this is.
Very soulfull..
this is very excellent, great find.
Best song I've ever heard in my life

The man never played a song the same way twice.
There will probably never be another era like this (though we can always hope and pray).
I love this tune
Reaching through time to bend my soul. Whoever recorded this, thank you.
It might have been Jimi himself. He had a "suitcase" tape recorder for just such events.
mjimih . so that means there's more recordings that someone is just keeping all for themself....thats messed up

I once read in the Urantia book about "celestial musicians", I firmly believe this to be true and that Hendrix is one of them.
DAMN !!!!!!!YEAH
