For those curious, Autocannon 5 [of any variant] spit out 50 KG of ammo per trigger pull [20 Shots per ton], while AC/20s drop 200 kg of ammo. In the case of Ultras and standards, these are solid slug, for LB-X, these are shotgun style sub-munitions and for rotary, many chain-fed smaller rounds. a 440 lb shotgun shell is what an LB-20-X Autocannon fires, that's enough to invalidate 1 metric ton of solid steel armor and then some. Gauss Rifles fire a 125 kg lawn dart [8 shots per ton]. Also when you hear "machine gun", don't think BAR. think Vulcan cannon. A clan MG weighs 250 KG and spits out 5kg of dakka in 1 trigger pull.
In the old Battletechnology Magazine from the 1980s, they had an article/articles explaining how & why the weapons worked. At that time it was said that BattleMech's (& Vehicle) special armor was excellent at stopping High Speed Kinetic Penetrators ie Tank Cannons, but would chip away & ablate off from fragments & slower blunt force attacks. Energy weapons would also ablate the armor. Auto-Cannons were descended from Anti-Aircraft guns firing fragmentation Flak Rounds. This is why you have big blocks of armor you have to scrub away & why Vehicles don't use Tank Guns anymore.
Hey I know it's been 3 years but you got some sauce on why mechs are 10x as big as a tank yet somehow weight about the same or less? What part of them is so light that somehow can't be put on tanks instead to make them basically indestructible.
@@HalIOfFamer I don't have anything specific. In the early versions of the game (80s up to the mid-late 90s), Battlemechs were described as being usually around 30 ft tall, ie they can mostly hide behind usual 2-3 story buildings. While vehicles need hydraulics, suspensions, drive shafts, etc. for movement, a Battlemech only needs a basic framework articulated skeleton around which Myomer fibers are wrapped like muscles. Myomer fibers expand & contract when electricity is applied & they act like muscles. The Fusion Power Plant produces the energy for movement & to power any energy weapons. Technically since all that is required for the Myomers to function is electricity, that is why Mechs can be powered by I.C.E. engines. Note that I.C.E. mechs can't use energy weapons because the engines don't produce enough energy. Anyways, that is also why the majority of Mechs (at least originally) are humanoid in shape & more bug like ones were unusual or rare. As years went by & artists either didn't know, or the Rule of Cool took over, & Battlemechs have been drawn as being bigger & bigger & bigger. It also didn't help that the Battlemech miniatures & vehicles are out of scale with the hex maps & building chits that were included in the early game. The cockpits are also described as being "in the head" but if you look at the early Battlemechs, especially the Japanese anime inspired ones, 1/2 to 2/3s of the pilot was in the Center Torso with only 1/2 to 1/3 sticking up into the Head, but if the Head was destroyed half the pilot would be gone also. I hope this helps.
I like the autocannons. There's just something about using a weapon with gunpowder and metal in a universe where lasers and particle beams are prevalent.
The main advantage of the energy weapons usage is that they no longer need to carry much ammo or none at all, in the case of laser or PPC's you just need a strong power supply & cooling system, high power energy canons can shred even the strongest mechs, during the Golden Age of the Star League Aerospace Heavy Fighters were apt mech killers, capable of taking down even the mighty Atlas just like our world gunship/choppers or The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II taking out tanks, the Star League had also refined the usage of conventional ammo but in projectiles ignition, fuel and components, the fact remains that while energy weapons are more effective at taking out heavy or fast stuff, solid ammo is still a must have,
I think battletech also has the railgun which falls under the ballistic category, subsection: really big gauss cannon. Used on and against capital ships.
Much like Oliver would utter....."Please sir I'd like some more". Your videos are both entertaining and informative in the extreme! If you are conducive to the idea, and time permits please continue with your efforts:-)
I prefer the PPC's. Specifically the ER PPC's. No minimum range which means I can get up close and personal with a very painful punch to any unsuspecting light mech. I use that paired with an lbx type AC 10 to make double sure light mechs are just victims. And on top of that the PPC's short out ECM (Electronic countermeasures) for a few seconds. Which means if I know there's someone trying to be sneaky, I can hurt them while making sure my team knows too. And that's in my 55 ton Shadow Hawk. Jump capable as well. When I'm controlling it, it competes with lights in agility and mobility. Just lower top speed. It is specifically modified to kill off light mechs. And if you see my heavy class mech it is a 75 ton Marauder that has less weapons than normal. I stripped the medium lasers out for additional heat sinks, swapped the PPC's for ER PPC's. And that means the very hard hitting thing I mentioned before? Now it has two of them. And the autocannon I have mounted changes between the favored lbx 10 or the rotary 5. Now you might not think it but I selected my variant very carefully. It is jump capable and still very maneuverable. Still designed to wipe out light mechs by the lance and can still snipe with the ER PPC's. All of my mechs are vicious at range. But the closer you get, the more they hurt, and the more you realize they were built to be ready for anything
Well done sir keep the battle tech coming! I do believe the Papa nurgal's bath is going to be nice and warm from all this dakka. Great way to hit the major weapon tech new players are guaranteed to run in to.
I prefer Rotary ACs, personally: A fuckton of firepower in a mini size compared to similarly-powerful ACs. And beam lasers too: simple. The SRM4 is my mssl system: no frills and a small scatter pattern. Useful.
OMG YEAH. RACS, SRMs and PPCs for me. I like to brawl with options for a constant stream of damage, and options for delivering a heavy blow with a single slick
Once in a game i took the customization a bit to far with my crusader i had 2 5 ultra atoucannons on each arm instead of missiles and lrm 10s in the shoulders needless to say i was dealdy at any range especially since i would grapple a mech the unload in it's joins or cockpit
Somebody seriously thought that waiting 200 years to use long-range missiles on the battlefield was by any stretch of imagination possible? we have this now and we are 5 years from flamers according to lore!

Tank cannons still exist in lower tech forces. They have -3 damage against armor.

"We're gonna be here till Nurgle takes a bath."
Depends on the bath my man XD
The vehicle flamer is a petroleum based weapon not a fusion based weapon, hence why it has ammo.

We are closer to this technology that expected, fusion engines are already being made.
