    Space AT&T, and their bastard step child, Space Verizon ( Word of Blake), are to blame for most of the Inner Spheres problems. Once Blake died, and Toyama took control, that's when Com Star came up with the brilliant idea that the only way Humanity could reach enlightenment, was through Com Stars Ultimate Leadership. And they really didn't care how many had to die to do it.

      @@smokestriker1258 The houses did the killing, but it was Comstar that set up most of it. The only free pass that they get is for the First Succession war; they helped to start the other's. The Word of Blake on the other hand, they took it to a whole nother level.

      And the Amaris Coup / Kerensky Exodus is almost a reversal of the Horus Heresy, where Horus [Amaris] wins but is taken out by Guilliman [Kerensky] who fucks off to Ultramar [Pentagon Worlds] to create the Imperium Secundus [Great Clans] while the Traitor Legions trash the Segmentum Solar [Inner Sphere Succession Wars]

      The scary thing is, it could actually happen. Given enough time, power, and Kool-Aid, organisations like ComStar are not beyond the realms of possibility.

    • @dr.strangelove9815
      @dr.strangelove9815 2 роки тому

      @@TheAngrySaxon1 Oh yeah, absolutely. I think if people are to reach such an advanced state, the flow of data and communication from star system to star system would be a massive piece of leverage for organizations, just as logistics would be. If enough time were to pass, strife came and passed, and people revered the power of technology, which had the ability to maintain civilization, and the technology were to be beautiful in its complexity, I could see some quasi-technology-cargo cult appearing, funded by the massive business side of the organization.

    Maybe I should read some of the novels or something but I never understood how you mystify a machine. I realize operators can be ignorant of the various mechanisms, but surely the mechanics and engineers that maintained the HPG network weren’t swayed by the mysticism, were they?

    • @GrimDarkNarrator
      @GrimDarkNarrator  5 років тому +5

      The principle would be that, if you do something for long enough without questioning it, then the dogma becomes fact, even if it ignores common sense. Maybe not the greatest example, but think of any other religion at the time of its inception. Whether you're christian or muslim or whatnot, if you're reasonably devout, you just do the rituals nowadays, despite how nonsensical they may be from an empiric point of view. This generation might understand how a microwave works for instance. But if civilization starts to regress and fewer and fewer people actually understand how the microwave works, the masses will be left 10 generations later ONLY knowing that this magical machine warms food up. The warmth is the power of the gods as far as they know.

    • @dr.strangelove9815
      @dr.strangelove9815 2 роки тому +1

      I could be wrong, but, I think the quote: "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" resonates with Comstar. There are engineers, technologists and mechanics, but the sheer amounts of super advanced technology would be nearly impossible to master for one engineer, and the wonderous power of such technology would awe most, especially if reemerging from a lot of war where conflicts redirect time from study/research to war.
      On one side, there is a more practical aspect to engineering: established mechanics, equations which govern machine design and actual fabrication done by technicians. Then, there is the theoretical: creativity, invention, theory and inspiration. I think it would be hard to not be swayed, in some form, at the amazing potential of FTL communication/travel, the "lostech" and distant myths of the Star League, a golden age. Comstar may not have been "religious", they were more of a cult based around ideals and potentials, at least believed by the laypeople.

    • @Seriona1
      @Seriona1 2 роки тому

      Plus don't forget that the common era of Battletech which takes place after the fall of the Star League is a massive technological regress with them trying to catch back up to the tech level of the Star League. Comstar taking control of communications lead them to be arrogant enough to believe they were top dog regardless. That kind of arrogant can lead to zealotry regardless if a deity is involved or not. Like Alexander the Great, he was told by a lot of people over his years he was the son of Zeus even though he didn't believe it at first, he eventually believed it and thought he was a God until an arrow to the chest showed him otherwise. Comstar is the same with their HPG's.

      Generally speaking, most of the equipment/documentation/engineers who knew how those things could produced and maintain was nuked during succession wars. Repeatedly. As well as big chunk of infrastructure supporting them (universities, libraries, data centers etc) And after people who tried to pick up theirs scrap was nuked as well. And some nukes on top. So IS ended up in a state where a big chunk of knowledge either lost or could not be applied properly, because nobody have a proper equipment to do so, and only now kind of sort of trying to rebuild itself.
