IF Buddy achieved a peak of mastership, it was 1967. Of all the incredible performances, his work on the Away We Go broadcasts was PHENOMENAL!
At this time I was a soldier in viet nam and serving in the u s army I was fortunate to come home and was stationed in Atlanta Georgia my big welcome home present was to see and hear fantastic buddy rich and his dynamic big band

Being a drummer myself, I have to acknowledge the fact that Buddy is playing all this amazing stuff " In A Suit!" Try it! I can barely get through a gig in shorts and tank top! Lol!
As drummers we all know his extraordinary talent was not his solos, of course they were amazing however his ensemble chops were dazzling, the fantastic interplay on the cymbals, never intruding on the soloists and breathing with the ensemble as if he'd personally authored the charts even though he didnt read music. He possessed an audiographic memory, he'd listen to the band play the chart one time and then record it on the first time he played it, having at that time memorized it for life. Art Tatum and Harry James possesed the same gift. This particular band featured here is from 1967 and were showcased on the Summer replacment show for Jackie Gleason that year. The band personell was a whose who of terriffic LA musicians including Chuck Finley, Ollie Mitchell, Pat LaBarbra, and Jay Corre to name a few. Would certainly love to see more of these entire episodes digitally remastered. The show also srarred Buddy Greco and George Carlin along with some fantastic guest performers.

I can certainly see why buddy rich was so highly regarded as a drummer. The problem is that in his own band that drumming skill had no obvious use case. Rather his skills were only ever showcased as far as I can see, essentially as show pony party tricks on TV shows. Admittedly the drummers paradise of rock music hadn't been developed when rich was active, but nonetheless it means his drumming was never an integral part of a broader artistic expression. He just had a showband and did elaborate solos in the middle of tracks that didn't really require it.
This last bit is maybe a little bit unfair but you came across to me is a bit of a wanker

Easier to watch the original clean Black and White clip. The colorized version with all the flashing is horrible. Don't try to fix it if it's not broken.
BTW... those are VOX drums.
Big ego.. lots of flash and no soul .. was an asshole to his band members ...move over buddy you're no Elvin Jones or Max Roach.
