like you say at the end. if i can do it, you can do it. Well my wife did her first oil change on our dodge caravan. i was there to guide her and this video help her out alot. thank you vary much for your videos.
I agree, the van was scheduled for judging at this summers Concours d’Elegance on Pebble Beach. He Ended up only taking third place because of Eric’s oversight 🥉🏆
Excellent video! Thank you very much for sharing. First time I have seen an oil filter that went into a housing like that since the days of my '65 MG Midget! The location of this one is much easier to deal with.
Hey we have a 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan rt, and I looked it up and it says you need 5.9 quarts of oil. Can I just put in 5.6 quarts of oil, #1 model. And I have an issue with fueling, after $10 it’ll stop fueling at every $0.10 to $0.40 cents, please let us know how to fix it and where to fix it in Springfield, Illinois thank you,
Wish I saw this earlier today I bought a fram filter from Walmart that they said was the right one but I guess that's why I never found it. I unscrewed that housing but thought it was a fuel filter
In case no one noticed the tire pressure light was on unless he crunk it up on the lift just dont make sense your supposed to check your tires every day before you drive if one looks low then you break out the pressure gauge not knocking you I like your videos
Had a friend who drove his Plymouth duster 1972?....approx. 160,000 miles with no oil change, he would just add oil when ever it would get low, ran great. Oh ya he never changed the oil filter either. cant imagine what the inside of that engine looked like. I have never seen a oil filter like the one you just changed, kind of cool to be able to see inside of it. Guess I'm living in the past. I guess pretty soon they will get rid of carburetors also :)
Eric's got to make some money !!. Wish they made the screw on type with a formed bolt on the bottom, Hopefully the same size as the oil plug, so to use 1 wrench. Really I would like a house mechanic to do it all for me to be honest. But if I lived close to Eric, I would just take it over in the middle of the night and drop it off. Then call him say every 15 minutes to see if he had it finished yet :) Bet that doesn't happen to him much :)
It might be better too if you just had my cell number so you could call like sunday morning to see when it might be done on monday then call monday right after I start it and add a bunch more things you would like done... add after it is all finished see if you can come back later in the week to pay for it :)
Great Eric you got it done so fast... I'm going to be out of town for a few days, so just you know park it one of those empty bays till I get back, should not be but a few days. I'm so lucky to know such a pleasant mechanic,Oh question did you use the good wax or that turtle stuff.Happy Customer,CharlesPS, If you want to use it to chase down to Napa to get parts, or go get lunch feel free. Just watch 1, 3, 5 gear kind of wants to jump out, or just you know hold it in gear, that's what I've done for the last 5 years.
Have you ever seen black plastic shavings from the threads on the filter housing? Definitely plastic and definitely saw some stuck on the threads of the bowl.
I noticed you didn't check the oil dip stick for a level check or take off the oil filler cap. Would it be a good idea or are those steps a waste of time?
Very nice and thorough video. Thanks. On my van, every morning, or even later in the day, when I start it up, it sputters and sometimes dies on me. After restarting, it's fine. If it manages to keep running (doesn't die) for a few more seconds, again it is fine. It will be fine for the rest of the day, unless it sits idle for maybe 12 hours or more. Any ideas on that problem?
Informative video, thanks. I had a question: I noticed that the air filter had oil on it from the fresh air hose above it for the engine. Is that normal to have oil coming out of that hose, or would you say that's an indicator of a PCV issue?
Is it bad or ok to blow compressed air into the engine through the oil fill hole on the valve cover to help drain the remaining oil during an oil change?
Handy Daddy I wouldn't think it would hurt as long as you were mindful of the surrounding dirt. I would be mindful of the valve seals too. I don't really know how much extra you will get out is all...
I've noticed on a lot of your videos, you use a tripod that you move between cuts. But on others like this one, you have a camera person. Did you recruit Vanessa do be the camera woman?
be careful tightening those caps, those housings have been a problem with leaks, they can crack if overtightened. With these I use a short ratchet and go very easy on it. You just have to get the cap flange flush with the top of the housing, the o ring gets squeezed between the cap and the housing.
awesome Video. do you recommend putting Lucas oil with the engine? and yes how much oil and how much Lucas? I have the same car with 74k miles. i use synthetic oil what do you recommend ? thanks so much for your help
oil filters don't usually have a oil pressure relief valve. that's typically controlled by the relief/regulator built into or on the oil pump or its housing. there is an anti-shypon or backpressure valve in the filter. it's job is to keep the oil from draining down to the sump when the engine is shut down. past testing on farm and pencil filters had the highest leakby. meaning less oil on top to help inital. lubricate on startup until the pressure has built up to operating pressure.
Bert, that's not true. actually the oil pressure relief valve opens by pressure not RPM or Speed. it's typically just a ball held onto the valve seat by spring. and typically set between 65 and 75 psi. some are set differently by manufactors design. but 65 to 68 (ish) psi - is the normal setting.
Sad part is my uncle has one of these vans and he was telling me that ever since it was brand new it has burned more oil than a Wankel engine; and that Chrysler "knows about the problem".
Do you know if there is a difference between the 2011 vs 2012 vs 2013 Dodge Caravan engines? Or are they all identical? The reason I am asking is that the manual on 2011 and 2012 uses 5W-30 oil and the 2013 manuals says it uses the 5W-20 oil. I have cross reference the block, heads, and cranks, crank bearings between the years. All uses the same part numbers. Is there any reason why they recommend 5W20 on the 2013 and onward? Would 2011 and 2012 accept 5W20 and run just as well or better go with 5W30? Or will there be issues if a 2013 on 5W30 vs 5W20?
In my personal opinion, the move was probably for fuel economy. But there's a common problem with the rockers becoming oil starved at cold idle. So the move down could have been for that.
@Hong Kong User I was using castrol 5/20 fully synthetic until I notice on the filler cup says 5/30, now I use Mobil1 5/30 synthetic and didn’t see any changes whatsoever, I believe Pentastar would run in both oil without problems
i have a 2012 dodge grand caravan 3.6 flex fuel with 52,000 miles. What kind of oil should I use. Regular? Synthetic? High Mileage? and that is the difference between them?
Miguel Romero I don't normally ever use synthetic, just plain Jane dinosaur oil. Never had any problems, and my truck had over 300,000 miles on it, original motor.
I think Motocraft 5W-20 semi synthetic is a good choice for the 3.6L flex fuel dodges. Its cheap and my 2012 Dodge Journey with this engine runs like a watch on it. with 4K to 5k oil changes. I let the local Ford Dealer put in my in their quick oil change garage. also Used the 5W/30 Semi synthetic Oil in my wifes 2.4L 4 Cylinder Avenger with 121,000 engine ran fine with no issues. I think Ford specs their oil pretty hard since they would be responsible for a lot of Ford engine warranty work if they specified a crappy oil.
I think you should call my local dodge cervices place and tell them wtf is is wrong with them, i just got oil change on a car and they did not re fuil the liquids

Hoo Thank you for this video... It will help me for my first intervention in my Caravan 2012...I realy appreciate.... I'm from Quebec Canada...
Thank you so much you saved me a whole lot of crap. I would have never thought of looking for a filter there.
Right!?
A lot of manufacturers tend to hind little things like this to make you bring it in the dealership to get worked on only by them & it sucks
Awesome, in-laws just pickup a 2012 and now I know the in and out of the oil change. Thanks
A 7-year-old video to teach me how to change the oil in my van...thank you
Just bought a 2012 myself and it didn't come with an owners manual thanks for the video that filter would have had me scratching my head for hours

The video is very clear in explanation and demonstration. Thanks for doing good job.
I love that oil filter setup.
I really enjoy your videos. I wish you would be close to Brownsille, Tx so i could take my vans to you.
Great video. It helps to wipe your hands once in awhile so you don't leave oily fingerprints all over the engine compartment.

Your PCV could be stuck open. Need to be replaced every so often.

Handy Daddy I wouldn't think it would hurt as long as you were mindful of the surrounding dirt. I would be mindful of the valve seals too. I don't really know how much extra you will get out is all...
I wouldn't recommend it as a lot of times, compressed air also compresses and sprays water, which in effect would be putting water into your engine.
Stunning job Eric
You forgot “If I can do it, you can do it”. 🤪
No he didn't! He wasn't saying that trademark phrase this early in his UA-cam career. This is one of his earliest videos. Look at the date.
What is the material you have in the oil drain pan? What type of mesh is that? Can you buy that anywhere?
What do you do if the bypass valve goes flying out? At work we use an updated filter that doesn't need that valve.
That filter doesn't fit in 2011-2013 oil filter housing.
Checking the tire pressures with it on a lift? Shouldn't you do that on the ground, since I beleive it would affect the pressure readings?
+Ben Morris You would never have a gauge precise enough to see the difference in pressure. What pressure do you keep in your spare....?
South Main Auto Repair LLC 62 psi , damn doughnuts

Heard oil filters don't work at highway speeds, at higher ram's they open the bypass valve, is this true.
Bert Cochran Can't really say that it is

I'm surprised there's no washer or gasket for the drain plug. Is that correct?
Rodney Ninow most dodge vehicles don’t use crush washers they have a built in gasket on the oil drain plug
Was bored so I went through watching some old videos. What type of oil do you keep on hand for your oil changes?
