This would drive me crazy if a whole audiobook was recorded like that.

May not be phase on second listen. Vocal is bouncing left right and center. Many clicks and background noises. All of which may be intentional or just rotten mixing.

Agreed that's what it sounds like, but I think it's done through mixing/electronically. Possibly trying to make an AI voice sound less like a computer generated it.

I pressed the mono button on my speaker controller and it didn't cancel, so it's not out of phase, I think the voice is actually stretched back and forth on the opposite sides. Or maybe recorded / AI generated twice. And it's probably intentional because it goes to the centre on certain phrases.

It is out of phase ... but there is also a very short l-r and r-l delay at work, so it won't cancel in mono.

I have some budget vinyl records that were originally recorded in mono but re-issued in stereo. Well, how did they do that? A more crude way of how it was done in this video. One method is splitting the frequencies into left and right channels. Another is just to quickly alternate the mono recording left and right to create an echo stereo effect. One video on my channel was so bad, I went back and did a quick remaster to make it more tolerable for people listening on headphones.

Sounds out of phase to me which will mean in mono it will be either very phased or inaudible.
Is it deliberate? It could be; stereo listeners will get the sound from around the room not coming from one particular place and perhaps they’re not aiming at mono listeners or wanted to sound a bit spooky.
Do I like it? Artistic license excepted, but I’m a bit of a purist, I don’t like aftermarket effects but when it comes to an advert effects are ok.
Whilst I’m on the subject, if you’re listening to short wave or AM radio on an SDR when there is fading by setting your SDR to put one sideband on one channel and the other sideband on the other channel results in very little fading, though you do get the centre image moving around. Overall, it’s a massive improvement when listening to short wave radio.

It’s going for surround effect and is intentional. Listen on surround system- panned/phased voice plus slightly delayed center causes perception of 3 points of origin. Terrible in stereo, kinda cool in surround.

1.- The problem: time changes, amplitude and phase changes, between the left and right channel. I hear several changes, everything starts in time between the L and R channels, and in phase, monophonic, then you can clearly hear the sounds coming from the left channel first and then from the right, there are clear changes in volume between the channels and there are also phase changes, then again everything in time and phase, in MONO and so it repeats but starting on the right channel.
2.- It is deliberate, it is not an accident.
    3.- I don't like it

First of all, I would not call myself an audiophile because the music is my main interest, not the differences in gear. However, to get to a system which is capable of getting the best out of the recordings I have collected, I sometimes need to do the task of comparing different pieces of equipment. And I hear, people are called audiophiles when they are more interested in listening to how differences in equipment bring out different nuances in the same recording.
Yes, I can hear the effect on the voice. It moves back and forth from center to edges, and it makes the voice sound doubled, like 4 tracks, to varying degrees over the running timeof the clip. I don't know how it is created nor can I be sure if it was done on purpose. Psychologically though, it is very attention-grabbing, so it probably was done on purpose for the ad.
There is some pop music that has attention-grabbing elements in it that are not very musical, like the siren sounds in Christina Aguilera's "Dirty", and many more recent tracks I cannot name. I have never found the musical "Look at me!" approach of this kind of attention-grabbing through production to be particularly appealing.
Now, let's have an idea for a future video regarding voice:
I remember years ago at the train station downtown, they would play a test sound in one of the crowded corridors that had a voice talking, telling the passer-bys that they were trying out new techniques to make voice sound more audible over background noise levels of crowd and technical sounds, in this case, trains. Nowadays, when I turn on the TV or the radio, I get the feeling that the same techniques are being applied there to the voices with the goal to make them stand out and keep them understandable even when the speakers are placed in loud environments such as a car in traffic. How is this result actually achieved in voice production?

I kind of wondered if it was built from individual short samples by an AI...
So it found and assembled the correct words but didn't notice or care that they were recorded in different formats or even different rooms...
(Perhaps it was attempting to build the entire script from one word library but was forced to use some clips from another one that was less well matched.)
(I don't know if it was really sloppy or if it was deliberate and intended to be annoying and disjointed enough to command our attention...)

Some intentional flanging of the audio is being applied against the vocals. So the delay switches in between the speakers, creating a dizzying experience. It's bad on speakers, but even worse on headphones. I need to lie down...

Their voice is kinda coming in and out of the centre channel - on my headphones it sounds as if it is coming intermittently from the centre channel and then it sounds as if there are just left left and right speakers angled away from me, maybe as if the voice is flipping from sounding 'internal' and 'external'.

  • @peters7949
    @peters7949 2 місяці тому

The left & right are 180deg out of phase,
    probably inaudible on headphones,
but if listening in mono, probably the channels cancel each other outs resulting in almost no Lucio.
I doubt if it’s intentional, more likely created by someone only listening on headphones who is far less talented than they think.
During my time at the BBC it was fe too common that internal on-line training videos etc suffered from the same problem.
Whereas the monitoring selector on broadcast mixing consoles we used, had the option to phase reverse one speaker to enable the Studio Manager (mix engineer) to check for issues like this.

I've recently heard of a new trend where music or whatever is panned and phased to give a constant state of movement around the listener. It's purported to give some sort of calming effect. I think it's just introducing the concept of what stereo can do to a whole generation or two who haven't been exposed to proper hifi sound

It seems unintentional. It sounds like a good voice recording was mixed with stereo woosh sound effects, then an automated "make it sound good" process struggled with the sound FX, causing issues with the voice track.

Ordinarily I use accessibility settings to sum the L and R channels and listen monaurally with closed-back headphones. Under those circumstances it sounds like band-passing, which suggests a Left/Right phasing issue. But no! After listening monaurally, solely to the left channel, I agree with VictoriaQ...'s explanation. It sounds like rapid auto-panning. I bet the effect could be reversed with a corresponding, phase-inverted auto-pan. Good one!

It sounds like one of those circle effects where the left and right channel switch around. I'd say if the mic was not spinning it was added on purpose. It also sounded a tad distorted at times, like it was clipping.
I didn't listen on headphones but on a iMac with stereo speakers. Let me fix that...
On headphones, AKG 141, it sounds more accidental, since the switching seems a bit random. I can still hear some clipping in the treble range?
Also it sounds filtered, maybe some noise filter to remove background sounds?

  • @TrainsAndWellbeing
    @TrainsAndWellbeing 2 місяці тому

    That's horrible to listen to!
It starts OK then some weird phasing and timing goes on. It's not a simply 180° phase variance either; it's like there has been a delay put in then run out of phase between the two delays. A simple out of phase would only make the dialogue sound wide, or unlocalised however this also seems to feature some kind of echo. It would take time and effort to produce this effect so I don't think it's accidental; perhaps attention grabbing by design?
It would be interesting to play it through a Dolby Pro Logic, or other matrix multichannel decoder to hear which speakers the dialogue comes from.

I can hear it, but I don't think it's mono in opposite phase. I suspect the voice would be audible in mono (though I haven't checked). It's not consistent. So is it stereo mics set up wrong, or is it an intentional stereo widening effect to make it stand out more, or make it sound more like user generated content, ie. less professional, so you thing it's a normal person who succeeded and trust them, rather than someone scamming you, which is probably what is actually happening from this kind of get rich quick from this bogus training scheme ad.

    1. It's terrible, Caused by inconsistences Phase manipulation effect and also it switches randomly from full mono to this terrible effect.
    2. I Tried it on Multi channel (Dolby, DTS and other processes) to see if there is any link to the original video visual: no link, on multi channel it switches to ambient speakers back and forth..
    3. It Seems that the video was heavily edited visually and parts of its soundtrack were recorded with this effect and other parts at mono.
    4. when The effect is on, It seems there is a correlation between the Voice Pitch and level of phase shifting (The higher The Pitch is the higher the phase shift is there).
    5. You do not need to be an audiophile to notice the bad effect. You may need to have some audio education to analyze what is going on.

That's interesting to hear, I'm not experienced with vinyl anymore, but I can relate to albums being re-released after 50 years using the original tapes, I did hear the vinyl 50 years ago but my hifi was more lowfi than hifi so when I got the cd versions over 35 years ago they sounded amazing, but on re mastering and re mixing in the last couple of years some have been a big disappointment to me and others have been a huge improvement on the first CD version, I think the actual re mix may have a bigger effect than I imagined...
