  • I have been having a few charging troubles with the old Land Rover, is it the battery? Is it the alternator? Turns out all that was wrong is a tinny little light globe (Part Number R232590) In this Video I use a multi meter to show a few quick test to work out what’s wrong with the charging circuit.

Most likely this is the same problem we are having on our IIA. Thanks for the vid!

Very good vid, informative and has encouraged me to try and track down the charging issue on my 2a.

I wonder if this may be a problem for my Sanderson forktruck as well... I will make a point of checking. Thanks for the vid.

Hey mate, I have the same later series 2a as you and were wondering where you got your door mirrors from. The ones I have are mounted up near the front of the car and are useless.
    Cheers.

Hey Zac, The one I have on The drivers side is off the Late Series 3 and early defender I think, it’s a lot easier to see out the back with. I had the up the front on the wings for a while but they were useless to drive with. I drilled some holes in the part of the bulk head where the windscreen folds down. I still haven’t got the passenger side one quite right.

I guess this was the best they could do in the late 60's, earl 70's.. But a really poor design even then, can't even get to the bulb easily and sooner or later it won't even start and your stuck out in the bush. Today many of us have replaced the bulbs with LED's. However, this won't work on the charger bulb..
What you have to do is get yourself a 25W 50 Ohm 5% Aluminum Housing Resistor (You could use a 5W, but it would be hot all the time, the 25W stays cool) and a diode put a IN4005 or IN4007 diode is in series with the LED as it can be damaged if the voltage goes high negative. The LED goes "across" the Resistor. The end result is you have what looks like a" bulb" to the Alternator. Or you could just keep a spare Bob with you! and all the tools to remove the dash. .Really a great video you made here, I's sure it helped many people. PS: 50ohm? The original bulb draws about 19mA, the resister will draw 25mA @ 12V, close enough. Don't over pay for these parts, should cost you well under 20 bucks, everybody selling overpriced Land Rover stuff.
Oh by the way, need a series 3 Alternator for you 2A (the one used)? The secret is it cheap (like 60 bucks), used on over 200 different vehicles, "they "won't tell you that. Search for " Backhoe 420 3-175". Example: www.amazon.com/dp/B07YN2C9LJ?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details.
Lucas does not make new alternators anymore (and it was a crap brand in the day) , but this model is still very popular on old cars and there are many new ones out there made by others, better quality too. But the don't advertise, the 2A, 3 market is too small. Just search for the "Backhoe 420 3-175" if you need one. Good luck mates! Edit: but you will still need an adaptor hardware set to mount the series 3 on a 2A. Land Rover North and others sell it.
