Awesome video! i’m 16 and run xc and track, i have literally not stopped listening to the podcast since i discovered it (aka my parents are annoyed i won’t shut up about it) and i would just like to tell you how much you and megan have pulled me through bad moments in training and even just in school in general. i turn to the podcast in any mood, at any point of the day, whether i have had a good workout, a bad one, or even just a bad mental day. after facing bad coaching and the comparison that comes with being human the podcast always brings me back to what is important: the love, gratitude, and appreciation of those around me and what i have accomplished. thank you so much for all you have done for me and i can’t wait to see you crush western states! GO FOR THOSE BIG DREAMS AND KILIAN BETTER BE SCARED, HUZZAH!
We are so damn proud of you. High school can be so hard (it was hard for both of us), and the way you are navigating that journey is inspiring to us. Just know that no matter what, it gets better, and the future is SO BRIGHT! Keep us updated ahead!
@@MountainRoche there's room in this space for everyone. These videos showing behind the scenes provide so many insights and nuggets of knowledge for all of us - from back of the packers to the elites. Thank you both so much.
Fun episode guys! I'm in the Leadville 100 this year and after watching this and other podcasts with Roche, I've decided to go all-in on breaking your record David. I've already been stretching out my stomach for 55 years (I mean "GI training") and I've nailed that 12-min/mile (or more) warm-up/cool down. I think when I add the nose strip and some super shoes, I've got this!! :) Seriously, it'll be my first 100 and I am a fellow biology geek and really love getting into the science of anything that'll help. Great stuff
Speechless, I've listened to you and Megan for a few years now, and it's been crazy. Do you know what I find the most amazing thing? You have replied to everyone's comments! That's why people look up to you, all that talent but humble. I have never wanted someone I didn't know to succeed this much. Go do it, Coach, were all rooting for you.
I am not an ultra athlete nor do I have aspirations to be. But I learned about you from watching other channels where I was trying to learn to just run casually for my overall health- starting at 55 yo and a history of HATING running. I love your story of “coaching someone when you never ran an ultra means you are unqualified.” Such nonsense. I usually don’t comment on videos but I just wanted you guys to know that your impact is beyond the small community you believe you are impacting. Thank you for all you do and keep posting videos! They are more valuable than you know.👍
This means so much to us, thank you! Your start at 55 is one of the most inspiring things I have ever heard. I am going to channel that energy into everything I do ahead!!! YOU ROCK!
Hopefully Allie doesn't issue a copyright claim haha! She inspires me so much and I watch her videos on every uphill treadmill session to get motivated. It's so cool when an athlete I coach and friend can also be one of my ultimate life inspirations!
I like running, but am nowhere near the level that any of the advanced training talk on the SWAP podcast would make a difference in my performance, but it still has made a huge impact on my life. I'm a naturally anxious and fear-driven person, and just kind of basking in David and Megan's optimism, vulnerability, and love for a couple hours during my long runs on Sundays have been better therapy than I have ever paid for. Can't wait to see more video content like this... maybe the only content on youtube that actively makes me a better person.
Thanks David. 65 year old fan girl here. Just wanted to say you really are a top bloke ! Have used your free ultra programmes for awhile now with great success…love them. But thanks to you and Megan , really upped my previously fucked up fuelling regime, and what a game changer , even for this older, slower gal . I’ve also been inspired to stop being so half arsed about scheduled faster sessions as well. Your willingness to share with us mere mortals the workings of the inner sanctum is truly selfless and so very appreciated. Looking forward to travelling the path to Western States with you guys. Go well. Cheers
I don't comment much on UA-cam and rarely read comments but glad I had a quick scroll of them! I'm 68 and trying to restore previous health and fitness levels so that I can run regularly again. Just started a 5K training plan. Congrats on doing so well and for the inspiration!
Awesome episode! Love seeing how the science comes into actual practice. What a fun, insightful training video - and so relatable as a time-limited parent!
Oh David, you’re a legend! This video is a masterpiece - brimming with heartfelt emotion, especially at the end. It resonated deeply with me and I’m certain runners everywhere. We see and appreciate everything you do. Thank YOU!🙏🏻
This means so much to me, thank you!! We are going to really show the nitty gritty hard parts of training and being human, and this message will help motivate that. I appreciate you so much!
I love how you are so open about your training, your nutrition and the entire process. There is so much to learn and I love your energy and enthusiasm. I saw your podcast with Rich Roll and it totally blew me away. You are an extraordinary athlete and an amazing human. Thank you so much for taking us along for the ride!
You are so incredible, thank you. My hope is that when all is said and done, I'll be remembered for lifting people up helping humans move forward with our understanding of what's possible!
This is beyond inspirational. I hope these mad scientist ideas get you the win at Western States! Thank you for sharing about your life and insights into training 🙏
You are so fantastic, thank you!!!! My only shot is to figure out answers that maybe other people haven't fully tried yet. Either way, it's going to be a wild ride and we can't wait to share!
Hi David, your videos, comments, and observations about running have made me improve my running over the years. I watched them without knowing the caliber of athlete that you are, I only knew how great of a coach you were. I was born in Spain and I am a big Killian supporter, but in this year's WS I will be rooting for you. Let's go David!
Oh my gosh this means so much to me. THANK YOU! It's ok to root for Kilian though--he is one of my heroes and favorite athletes in any sport. I appreciate you so much
Really connected with your attitude towards racing and using love as your key to success. Being able to compete is a gift and being healthy enough to express the love you have for those around you and the sport of running is no small thing. I'm a personal trainer/endurance coach and am always grateful for the opportunity to share my love for sport and foster that same love in those I work with as well as the people that are close to me. Props to you for making the best of training with the stressors, I find myself doing much the same between my work schedule and personal training pursuits. Good luck in your build!
I bounce around at a 12:00 min pace without the ankle weights. 😭😭😭 I love to see how unmanicured your roads are! My neighborhood has similar roads and now I know when I run, I’m training like a Champion.
Just found the podcast and am bingeing it all through my first marathon prep. The podacast is amazing that this video/vlog adds so much to it for me. Thank you both for all you do!
I discovered your content and podcast in 2022, and since then, your content has continued to motivate and inspire me. Your mindset and positivity have fueled a journey of self love that has transformed my life, and your training plans and insights have led me to achieve goals I never thought possible. It's been an absolute pleasure to watch you take off, and I can't wait to see you crush it at Western States this year!
David is not a man, he's a freaking machine. Watching him crush these training paces saying "thinking about Killian" was actually chilling. I'm training for my first 50k at ridiculously slow paces, but I am still doing training blocks with VO2 max intervals at 7:30 pace. I wish you luck destroying the competition at WSER and this is great motivation to follow along during my own journey.
This is my first comment on UA-cam! Just wanted to say congrats for your family and thanks for everything you share with us. I think it was in one of your podcast where you said that "Shoot your shot! Who knows what might come next?" I think about this every time I am assaulted by doubt, and I share your wisdom (😉) with my interns and younger co-workers (the older ones are too cynical for such a positive message 😅). So thanks again for sharing the love, bring it on, shock the world! Ow, and one last thing : those are beautiful words to describe how parenthood has changed your life 🥰
Thank you so much for watching and listening!! I have to constantly remind myself of that advice, and I definitely haven't always lived it. You are so wonderful!
Appreciate the play by play! I can't wait for the next one and thanks for taking us along with you! "Lion"el would be so proud! Now you and Megan can cuddle and watch your videos too!!
Absolutely incredible. Shooters shoot! Call the shot and let the chips fall where they may. Thank you for taking us along on the journey. Excited to see you chase your dream.
HECK YES!!! You will never land the vault unless you first think you are going to land the vault. I might have to lie to myself a bit to get there :) THANK YOU!
Love the podcast, long time listener. So happy you’ve decided to record this journey and post it for us to follow along. Excited to see the growth. I’ll be mimicking the workouts(best I can) hoping for some growth of my own.
cool to see you here on youtube now, you've been a great inspiration on my own little journey my zone 2 pace is still an abysmal 13 minute mile, but seeing how far we can truly go (literally) is such an amazing thing. its what keeps me heading out the door, to test my limits, to see what kind of crazy things we can accomplish despite how hard life is best of wishes
I love this!!! It's all about pursuing our own personal limits, wherever those are. And if you do that enough, you might shock yourself too (like I did to myself this year!). THANK YOU!
Awesome video and workout! I've followed you since you were a regular guest on Ginger Runner Live teleporting in from a dank basement somewhere with one 40 watt incandescent bulb.😄 You've come so far since then and I couldn't be happier for you! I'm a 63 year old guy still going at it as hard as I can and I've learned so much from you and Megan, your interviews and podcasts, your book, and all of those Training Tips articles. I can't say how much I appreciate the knowledge and the attitude towards running and life that you've shared and the sacred cows you've sent to the metaphorical slaughter. (Lungs with feet and VO2max obsession, MAF and endless slow distance, etc.) All the best! I can't wait for episode 2.
So proud of you for your parenting journey!! I think the main thing Megan and I tell each other is that we want to model for the kids that it's meaningful to chase any goal, whether in running or something else!
Currently building up over the next year for my first ultra next January. First learned about you through another short film and love your mentality. I love to see how you navigate being a father and training. Thank for sharing that part of your story as it is an inspiration for me that I can pull this thing off with a two year old of my own. Congrats on little Ollie and will be following your journey!
Let's go! Great energy David. Your example and your emphasis on 15 years of aerobic base building really helps somebody like me who doesn't get instant results from running. Realistic expectations, gets me excited for the next 15 years. Good luck
David and Megan, to be honest, you are my inspiration in the last couple of months, it is so great, that you are sharing your knowledge and love with us. Thank you!❤
"That's gross; we're not using that." 🤣 I love how "normal" y'all make this type of training appear -- usually the pros seem too specialized to emulate, but you guys are nailing the inspiration zone every time! Keep it up!
Yay I love this so much. I’m excited to follow along. Thank you Roche family and Cody for this cool new series. And congratulations on the new addition to your family, David and Megan! Shooters shoot!
I’ve been SO excited for this! David, you and Megan and SWAP have become my absolute idols in the past few months as I’ve began to get really into the running/trail running scene. I am PUMPED following along yer journey and am roaring for you shooting your shot!! Absolute legends your whole team of Megan Leo Ollie and Cody here (plus everyone who loves you guys!)WOOHOO AND HUZZAHHH
i am so excited for this series! i just wanted to say that although i really thoroughly love the goofiness of the podcast, it is also fun to see a completely different vibe shine through in this video! It really works well here and the editing really brings this all together 😊
Woah, sodium bicarb in 2 SIS gels followed by warm up in ankle weights! That’s some extreme training! 👏👏👏 I listen to the Swap podcast every week but seeing it on video brings it home.
amazing stuff. Thank you for sharing your journey and being so honest and open about your training. Your steady zone 2 running looks so fast already but seeing you at the intervals is just pure insanity. Cheering for you and your young family. You guys rock!!!❤
Absolutely love this David, definitely my #1 Freetrail pick for Western States! Also incredible video by Cody Bare and loved the format. So freaking cool!
Ever since I heard David with Rich Roll I’ve been binge listening SWAP pod episodes. I’m an older cyclist, took David up on his offer to email him for HRZone chat to pinpoint my Z2. Super responsive and down to Earth. I’ve been able to glean a ton of info from David and Megan. Super inspiring. Huzzah! Is right. Thank you! (Watersconstr)
Thank you so much Sam! Cody is the brains behind everything--just so impressed with how he has shot his shot this year as a photographer and now videographer. Inspiring as heck!
I just want to add how awesome David and Megan are. About two years ago, I had some big changes in my life. Those changes led me to embrace running as a way to get healthy. I will never forget my first run -- a 1/4 of a mile in tennis shoes with me throwing up at some point. I started reading the Happy Runner and emailed David and Megan to thank them for the inspiration. Since then, I have reached the point where my training runs are 8 to 10 mile runs with sub 7 minute average mile times. My mile PR is faster than it was as a teenager. The unimaginable to me 2 years ago -- 20+ mile training runs -- have proven to be a normal thing I do on Saturdays. I am even now training for my first ultras. I mention all of that for a few reasons. First, David and Megan inspired me and I guarantee I am not the only one. Thanks guys. Second, what David is doing, we each -- in our own way -- have the capacity to do things we thought wasn't possible. You just have to dream and then take the steps towards that goal. Third, and lastly, the training is the journey and also the lifestyle. Embracing the work is an awesome feeling and can change you in ways that you may have never considered. I wish all of you a wonderful 2025.
@@MountainRoche Dude, thank you for kicking butt and inspiring me and others! Love, to me, is the merger of admiration and consideration. If that is right, then there is nothing but love from me and many runners for what you and Megan (and the kids and the dog) are doing. All the best in 2025, and keep showing us that hard work, some science, and love can bring out the best in all of us. Oh, and this is a great reminder that I need to get a bucket hat!
I absolutely can not wait for westers states! So excited to have a look into your journey. Congratulations on all of your success! And huge thanks for being such a big inspiration to a mid to back of the pack trail runner at 42yo! 🤣
Great job David and Cody. Thanks for taking us into your training and your life. Talk about "no secrets" though...feels like you're giving it all away.
David, this video is fantastic and the cinematography is beautiful. I’m so here for this! Sending love and awesomeness your way, thank you for the information and inspiration you utter gem.

That was pretty darn good!! Selfishly, I am excited to see your training in action as I am definitely a visual learner. Even though I have heard you talk about the stuff you did, it now clicks better than ever before. I am so excited for episode 2!!🎉🎉
David, I've been in several sports for 30 years, and I can tell you 37 is often a peak performance year - I've seen it repeatedly - and the year Dads have kids often are peak performance years. You got this! Just remember Mark Allen's words "Undertrain and over prepare" - I think that lines up sort of with your philosophy.
“It’s going to be fun to flow in Z2”
Proceeds to take off faster than my Z5

I'm a 63 year old guy still going at it as hard as I can and I've learned so much from you and Megan, your interviews and podcasts, your book, and all of those Training Tips articles. I can't say how much I appreciate the knowledge and the attitude towards running and life that you've shared and the sacred cows you've sent to the metaphorical slaughter. (Lungs with feet and VO2max obsession, MAF and endless slow distance, etc.) All the best! I can't wait for episode 2.
So proud of you for this journey!!! What an inspiration, 63 and freaking rocking it. Thank you so much!
loved the comments at the end about your experience of parenthood. i often feel guilty out training on long runs thinking im missing out on the kids.
You are so awesome!!!! So proud of you for the ultra journey. Cut yourself slack and remember it's all about consistency! YOU GOT THIS!
Let's go! Great energy David. Your example and your emphasis on 15 years of aerobic base building really helps somebody like me who doesn't get instant results from running. Realistic expectations, gets me excited for the next 15 years. Good luck
HECK YES, I love this!!! One brick at a time. Brick-stackers rise uppppp!
David and Megan, to be honest, you are my inspiration in the last couple of months, it is so great, that you are sharing your knowledge and love with us. Thank you!❤

You are amazing! I appreciate you so much!
"That's gross; we're not using that." 🤣 I love how "normal" y'all make this type of training appear -- usually the pros seem too specialized to emulate, but you guys are nailing the inspiration zone every time! Keep it up!
hahahaha you are the best! The next one is even more normal haha!

amazing stuff. Thank you for sharing your journey and being so honest and open about your training. Your steady zone 2 running looks so fast already but seeing you at the intervals is just pure insanity. Cheering for you and your young family. You guys rock!!!❤

Huzzah! Is right. Thank you!

You are so wonderful! THANK YOU! It means so much that you're following the journey and you care

You are such a boss Justin! Thank you!
You are WILD! I just turned 37 and I am completely questioning what I think of as a "steady run". Congratulations on Baby Ollie!
You are so wonderful!!!! The steady note is an effort, rather than a pace. So embrace your own personal effort! You are a boss!
Awesome video! Can’t wait to watch the next one 👏
Thank you so much for watching! You are so great!

You are so awesome! WOW what a journey. This is inspiring as heck to read. I can't wait to hear about how your journey unfolds ahead!!!!
They are amazing 🎉🎉🎉
That was awesome! Great work David & Cody!!
Thank you so much for watching! We appreciate you a ton!
I absolutely can not wait for westers states! So excited to have a look into your journey. Congratulations on all of your success! And huge thanks for being such a big inspiration to a mid to back of the pack trail runner at 42yo! 🤣

You are so awesome! That's SCIENCE!
Great job David and Cody. Thanks for taking us into your training and your life. Talk about "no secrets" though...feels like you're giving it all away.
Way more secrets to come! Thank you so much for watching!
It’s the ankle weights for me.

You are so wonderful! THANK YOU!
This is exciting. Looking forward to following your journey. Rooting for you!
Thank you so so much!!! You are amazing Paul!
I love that perspective! Thank you for sharing, you are a boss
so amazing David. Thank you so much. Huzzah!
You rock Tyler! HUZZAHHHH!!!
