I always remember Wilma Rudolph. I was a young girl during the olympics, when I saw Wilma she got me. This was in Germany. She fascinated me, her strengths willpower and this black young woman. I was always glad when the blacks won. My teachers couldn't understand me why I was so excited when the black sportsman was winning. I knew why and still do.
As a kid anytime I watch a soccer game on tv. I root for the black player and I always want him to play good and each time that player looses the ball it hurts me. lol 😂 I still like to see them fo good so we both on the same boat I think
Such an incredible piece of history and film. It was an honor to get to see this wonderful part of our lives and the beginning of Denzel Washington 's career. Thank you so very much.
This is probably my 5th time watching this, and it is still an excellent and enjoyable piece of history. I think Denzel’s wife, Pauletta is also in this movie. The young lady from Temple who Wilma met on her first day there and she said she wanted to play basketball with Wilma.
🙋🏾♀️ remember this story my mama told me about the story I’ve seen several movies about Wilma. I grew up in the original black panther party. We talked about her. I am so proud these elders, black people who pave the way for me and all of us. I always think that and I always contacted myself in a positive way because of the, if it wasn’t for these black trailblazers we wouldn’t be who we are in doing what we doing black people in 2024. Thank you Wilma. We love you and always proud of you”🥰👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 R.I.P,
Wooow. My teacher showed us this in the middle school library back in the day. (RIP Mrs Penny DeBerry). Its a delight rewatching it. "Sorry coach," and our star is born! ❤
Thank you for this film, from which lesson can be learnt: like listening & tenacity & loyal love. And Thanks to Denzel Washington for true commentary of other film Gladiator 2 that (a) Absolute power corrupts & (b) History Repeats itself if not learnt from it. May God bless you all.
Yes, I'm thankful for having Denzel in our lives. Hes such a good actor and person. I'm always listening to his quotes on Facebook. He's very inspiring. We'll miss him when he retires, but will continue to watch his movies. I also want to thank his wife for hanging in with him all of these years, it has been great to have you as a couple. I pray that you all stay together til the end of your days together. You both are appreciated. ❤
Thank you for sharing this movie. I love history of Black people being told and not hidden. We need more of our stories to be told. Knowledge is power.
Love and much respect for William Rudolph, read and knew about her in books, she's the main reason I ran track in high school, and enjoy running and jogging.
Simply a great film, telling a great story. Grumpy old white guy, I still had to pause the movie too often to wipe my eyes. 😎😎 {Certified Old Curmudgeon}
Great Documentary great cast 🙏 Changes things. God is Awesome And worthy to be praised!!! These typed Of movies should be part of schools History and curriculum and added to ALL SCHOOL. WILMAS ADVERSITY TO A VICTORY 😍😍💜💜🙏 💎 😇 AMERICA YOU WILL NOT FORGET THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF MY PEOPLE
Thank you for sharing Wilma. It was both educational and informative. I thought Carbon Copy was Denzel Washington's first movie, and I believed that I had seen them all until I came across this one that my 53 years+ memory could not recall.👍🏾
🙋🏾♀️ she wrote a book you notice when she won they wouldn’t friend me to the black Americans back then, like they are now notice no one Creek congratulated her of the other teams as a matter of fact, no one congratulated any of the United States teens back in those days. No maybe they did it off camera but if you notice the original footage, they didn’t go to congratulate her or the other team mates African-Americans but that’s all right we did and we’re still proud of her all of them.
I love this movie. Have watched it several times. As an older gal now I appreciate it even more than I did when it first came out. I guess as one ages the goals and dreams of others becomes more valued. What I never understood is why she never answered her daddys question... when are you coming home?
Never saw this before now but learned several years ago when a friend here in Detroit posted about being the young Wilma in this film that my grandfather was in it. I was shocked when she listed the cast. He played the doctor. I was very young when this came out. Miss him so much.🌺
I live in tn now for 7 years I found out about Wilma when my daughter did a project on her. And I have been working on Wilma Rudolph for 6 year at Walgreens as a black woman from Georgia this adds to my history
Saw this movie when it initially aired on NBC decades ago and thought Denzel was so cute and wondered if I'd ever see him again. Few yrs later saw this guy on TV show St. Elsewhere but didn't connect him to Wilma for a few years just thought he was a cute actor. Never dreamed he became as huge as he has. "Carbon Copy" was also a cute early film of his too.
Absolutely wonderful film with outstanding performances and a great lesson in perseverance. To see Denzel as an Italian prince watch Much Ado About Nothing with Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson. Kenneth cast Denzel as the prince with the attitude of, "Ya, he's black, so what, he's perfect for the role" and he was. In regards to the presentation about Gladiator 2, I've always thought about America as comparable to the Roman Empire, an essentially adolescent society running roughshod over the world, caring about nothing but profit and America. Your Coliseum is the Football Stadium and you measure the value of everything by the metric of football. Athletes are your gladiators and you greatly overvalue them but I'm sure you'll grow up eventually, that's if there's still a livable planet to grow up on.

My sister knew Richard from a mutual friend, during the time of Richard's popularity and fame... She was invited to watching the filming of this and meet Diana and Billy but her mutual friend (her boyfriend) was too jealous she said. (and he didn't 'let' her go watch...) She had met Barry Gordy as well.. He might have been the one inviting her or Richard... Richard 'saved' both my sisters another time at a party that was getting really bad fast, and sent them to his limo and got them out of them out! My sister isn't around anymore.. I always think of these times when I see this, and the message about heroine. My sister played this a lot for me and Diana did such a great job that I was surprised and sad for her, that she got so little recognition.. My sister said Diana lworked hard for this movie and observing addicts while on heroine too, for her role.. I always had a lot of respect for her in this ' assignment' and her work.. I will watch it again sometime and know the message in this was powerful, and it still is.. 🖖
It’s a shame we as a country nearly eradicated Heroine then went an invaded Afghanistan made a deal with the Northern Alliance who the Taliban was restricting from cultivating the poppy fields and we let them do it and armed them and installed Harmad Karzai as president of Afghanistan and poor America is addicted to Heroine again. What do you mean Cicely Tyson did not remember Denzel? Where is this coming from?
I thought Denzel's first movie was "Carbon Copy" with George Siegel?
First acting role is this movie. First Hollywood was c copy
Carbon Copy 1981, this was 1977 and technically a TV Movie although TV movies back then were a bigger deal then we consider today.
And I thought Carbon Copy was his 1st movie.
I since learned- I was totally Wrong.
Did she have her baby before the Olympics?

Denzel had some big front teeth. 😅
So "Carbon Copy" was not the first one?
This preceded Carbon Copy but was a TV Film not a theatrical release.
This is not Denzel’s first film. He had a small role in Death Wish, 1974.
A speaking role?
