The movie is good but edited to include things that are part of Savannah history but not necessarily related to the story. Thanks for showing Danny's final resting place. Love Johnny Mercer and Savannah GA! I've been to Bonaventure Cemetery. Did you tour the Mercer House? So beautiful inside with amazing oil paintings some as large as 8 ft mounted on the walls! The house is privately owned by a family who reside in a section not open to the public. I read the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, never seen the film. Book is amazing! 😃
Unfortunately, I was there too early in the morning, before they were open and had so many other places to visit that day. But loved seeing the outside and the neighborhood!

As a native Georgian, I have visited Savannah numerous times. Many of those visits included the Mercer-Williams home. Many years ago, I stood on the very spot on which Danny died. Late March is the best time to visit Bonaventure as the gigantic purple azaleas which cover the property are in full bloom. Spectacular!!!!
The Minerva quote is really appropriate for the upcoming Halloween season: "To understand the living, you got to commune with the dead." The events of the book/movie made me think of the Sir Walter Scott quote: "Oh what a tangled web we weave/When first we practice to deceive."
This was one of my favorite book to read. The movie is really good. You learn so much about people and what people will do for their needs. Mandy, Clint Eastwood's daughter portrayed John Cusack's love interest in the movie.

We LOVED visiting Charleston and Savannah! I have been to this cemetery, of course, as it was a great movie. So much history and tons of really neat anecdotes! Beautiful! I enjoyed both the book and movie. I have a Birdgirl statue that I put on my patio every year. Its my understanding that the original was removed from the cemetery years ago due to increased tourist traffic after the movie was released. Thanks again for another interesting visit!
Hi Becky, yes they removed it and it's now in a museum in Savannah. I didn't have time to go and see it, but the cemetery visit was really interesting, even without the statue. Although it would have been better with it. :-)

Thanks for sharing, Steve! I was there in November 2021, not too long before you were. I haven’t read the book or seen the movie, but I did go to the graves of Johnny Mercer and Conrad Aiken. Among my other stops in Savannah was the square where the bench was situated in Forrest Gump.

In the book it mentioned Danny thought he would have a giant headstone in Bonaventure cemetery if he died in Mercer house... He did get either. But in a strange way he got his wish, since his simple headstone would actually be the biggest draw to the neighboring Greenwich cemetery.

And when I came across your videos looking up more info about the true events from the book and film, I decided to take a look. If you are interested in other graves, I got one for you. She's not really a LGBT icon, but if you aren't familiar with her and your ever back in Colma, look up Big Alma Spreckels... The God Mother of San Francisco. She was a bit of a wild woman and brought fine art to San Francisco. She built the Palace of Fine Arts, the Legion of Honor and other museums. Coined the phrase "Sugar daddy", her husband was the heir to the Spreckels sugar fortune, and the popular myth is that's her on top of the Union Square plinth... Besides Charles Howard, she is one of my favorite San Franciscans because to me she represents the old SF spirit (which i desperately miss, so don't get me started on modern sf transplant culture lol). Speaking of the Legion of Honor, here's a creepy cemetery story... When they moved the cemeteries out of San Francisco to Colma, a lot of the graves just had the stones moved, not the bodies and many of those bodies were dumped in mass graves under Lincoln Park, where the Legion of Honor sits today. There could be as many as 10,000 bodies under the park... So, in a way, Big Alma's Legion of Honor is one of the nicest and most art filled tomb stones in the word... But it's not the only one in San Francisco... The other is the Asian art museum in the civic center... But that story involves body snatching, turning human remains into soap and selling the soap to unsuspecting San Franciscans... lol Sorry I went off on a tangent.
Yeah, I'll probably be changing it again soon too. I was going to delete it--it's just too difficult to have two channels--but I may keep it to upload a video every now and then. Going forward I will be focusing mostly on the other channel.

No Mercer ever lived in Mercer house, it was built For Johnny Mercers great grandfather but he nor Johnny ever lived in it, and Before anyone comes at me Ive lived in Savannah all of my 56 years
