I watch a lot of videos on model building - this was one of my favorites! Low key - straight forward techniques. Really enjoyed. Plan on taking your ideas to my work bench !!
Thanks John and good luck with your projects!
That is some ridiculous talent there sir. You did a great job keeping the sexiest airplane ever built looking great.
Thanks itildude!
I absolutely love your videos. They're so calming yet very informative. I also enjoy your modelling techniques, they're simple and effective. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Pete! I agree, the simplest techniques are the ones that can make it enjoyable for everyone of all skill levels.
@@MaxAfterburner By any chance do you have a video on spraying basics or can you recommend one you know of? Great build. I also think your techniques are really smart. I love the Tomcat and want to make this kit but I have not made one in 30 years and am afraid I will make a mess of it.
Thanks Chris V! I know there are a lot of videos out there on airbrushing techniques, but I can't say I know them very well to recommend any one in particular.
The F-14 looks like a cross between a retro spaceship and a sports car and i love it
Tomcats! 😃
Nice looking Tomcat build. The YF-23 gets my vote for next build. I haven't seen too many builds of this kit.
He made a video 1 month ago on the YF-23 and I also wanted to see a YF-23 build
The authenticity of that paint work for the fuselage is insane.
Some people may see a plastic model kit
I see someone who is an artist with a serious eye for detail.
I tip my hat to you, Sir
Thank you very much HvyMetal4Ever 😊
Very interesting and effective use of a black first coat. Seems to be a great choice for this particularly dark grey Tomcat. If you haven't begun your next project yet, I vote for the Phantom II in camo. Nice work!
Thanks Coriolis Effect! I also have you down for the Phantom/camo!
Coriolis Effect Phantom ll F4-D
I just *love* Tamiya kits! Much as I enjoy watching this, it fills me with a painful wistfulness: 🤥 I want to *build* these kits, not just watch someone else!
Wow--
Surgical precision
Beautiful model
Thanks Studly!
Some serious skill there! I would have just sprayed it with a flat grey colour lol
A decent airbrush is the key, rztrzt!
@@MaxAfterburner hi there👋😁
Hello Victor!
Muchas gracias, GLADIO.
Have really enjoyed watching your skills increase from build to build and your editorial skills have also improved a lot.
As for the next build, continue with the navy trend and go F-4
Thanks tanitatt, I sure wish I knew then what I know now about the video software I use to create the presentations. There's some things I would love to "fix" in my older videos.
You know I was in the Marine Corps for 8 yrs. I called for fire from jets, just like this one. And I am totally amazed how close you got it to look like the real thing. Great job.
Thanks for the comments James and thank you for your service!
Wow, that is a very amazing build. I love the F-14.
Sorry, that I am really really late. But, I think that you should build the A-7 Corsair 2, In the Air Force camouflaged colors.
Again very stunning work on this build. Congratulations
My uncle used to fly F14s for the navy off of the Kitty Hawk. Needless to say, I thought he was the coolest uncle ever.
That's great, he must have some fantastic stories!
Great Tomcat and nice paint. For the futur, Bismarck please !!!
Thanks Zoe40 User and I have your vote placed in the Bismarck column!
I applaud your attention to detail and meticulous model building ways.
Well thanks very much KefirTView!
You are one extremely talented model maker!
Thanks SlyFox211!
When I watch these I initially think “man this is cool maybe I’ll get inspired to do one” when I’m finished watching these I get reminded I have no talent 😂
Phenomenal man. Really.
Thanks Devin, you can do it! 😀
i was about to search for something then i saw this in my home page
never clicked on a video so fast
btw i would love to see f2b build
Noted :-)
Thanks for a very informative upload. I have just started modelling again since I was a teenager and some of the little touches you have employed have brought back a lot of things I used to do, so thanks for jogging my memory. If anyone is interested I gave up model making when I joined the RAF in 1979 to work on the real thing, and after leaving the Airforce work stopped me restarting my childhood hobby, now in my mid 50’s I am just starting out again and have not lost any of my enthusiasm,it is truly a timeless hobby. Airbrushes were not readily available then, and those that were on the market were either to expensive or very poor quality so I did it all by hand, it took forever to hand paint an Airfix 1/24 scale Stuka dive bomber, but very satisfying. Thanks again I have remembered a lot of old techniques but learnt some very handy new ones, especially the weathering and washing as again these were not “invented” in those old days.do you have a specific tip for giving the impress of weight on the wheel assemblies, I used to file a small flat on the bottom, but that wasn’t ideal if I wanted the wheels to rotate on the axels. Any tips gratefully accepted.
Thanks DJ Phantom! Modeling has and continues to change and be more innovative than what we experienced in our early days. I don't know how you would simulate the weight on the wheels if they are to be movable. The only thing I can think of is to try and find very malleable rubber than what is normally out there.
Would love to see a F-104 Starfighter build man!!
Wow, now that is brilliant...I would pay good money for a model like that. The enjoyment and passion that went into it really makes it worth every cent!
Thanks Beat89 Widmer!
amazing work
Hi Fionnuala, thanks for your kind remarks!
sir, you made me relive my childhood. i would stay up late to watch my dad building his models. while building, he would educate me about the planes. 🥲 im gonna share your channell to him.
Hi Ahmad, that's a great story! I'm glad this video has brought back great memories 👍
Awesome tutorial on the F-14 detail, you go that extra step and explain what you are doing rather than having just music. Keep up the good work!!
Thanks Steve, much appreciated! 😄
An Amazing build, as always. It's fantastic. In the video, you mentioned the units migration from the F14 to the F18. You also shared one reference photo that had the units F14 flying alongside a unit F18. Maybe you should build the corresponding F18 and display them together. Regardless, I look forward to the next project.
Thanks EchoNine! That's a great idea for the Bounty Hunters homage of the transition from the F-14 to the F-18. It certainly would make sense as a side-by-side comparison. Mike Alpha X-Ray.
If you want a real piece of aviation history find decals for VFA-41 “Black Aces”. This was the squadron that was involved in not one but two incidents involving the shoot down of Libyan MIG fighters once early 80’s once again late 80’s.....apparently the Libyan AF didn’t get the memo. Both incidents resulted in zero damage to the Tomcats but total destruction of the MIGS!
That squadron transitioned to the F/A-18F Super Hornet in the 2000’s not sure quite when but. If you can find the decals for both aircraft and same squadron that would be a rare exception to display both aircraft with a factory fresh paint scheme
Google the incident and you will see what I mean. Ironically the first actual shoot down incident occurred approximately a year after the “Final Countdown “ movie was premiered.....the second one was about three years after Top Chef, Top Plane.....Damm it Max now you got me saying it.....”Top Gun”
True fact: my first fleet squadron was in the opening scenes of “Top Gun”. The A7E Corsair 2...almost three years before I joined or even knew what the squadron was.
True fact #2. The USS Enterprise (CVN-65) used in Top Gun was also the carrier used in “Hunt for Red October”
Bonus: During the filming of Top Gun the director found a sun angle that was perfect for the movie. The Captain of the Carrier told them that the turn would cost about $25,000 and put them behind schedule......the onboard producer cut a check right there and gave it to the Captain.
Love the "Turkey". Looks like a nice kit, nicely done.
Thanks Bill!
"top chef" LOL Good one, buddy! Hahahaha
Thanks Jordan, "Maverick" was well known for his mastery in the kitchen X-)
Canadian viewer: Really nice build. Subtle and restrained weathering. Well done.
Thanks cdpgbc 1966, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I work with someone who is French-Canadian and I get a kick teasing him "aboot" his accent here in the U.S. , ay :-)
I assume it comes with a Danger zone LP included.
I have no interest in building models, but this is still one of my favorite channels to watch. Just amazing.
Thanks Lance, I'm glad you're getting some enjoyment out of it!
You know what would go well with this and the F-18....... a Prowler or Intruder
There seems to be a consensus forming with those two jets in mind!
I mentioned Phantom above but I want to change my vote to Prowler or Intruder. 😀
Amazing, amazing, amazing. I started this kit early July. I love it. It is incredible to watch your skill. I am up to step 26 right now. I bought a small compressor and a few inexpensive (master) airbrushes. I'm getting better. Thanks so much for this amazing video. It seems your video and editing skills are on par with your modeling skills..thanks again.
Hi Kevin, glad you enjoyed it. Best of luck and fun for your Tomcat build 😃
FULL BUILD V-22 OSPREY by ITALERI 1/48 scale model aircraft
Ronnald Esterson Terson I hate people that demand you tubers to do stuff, because most don’t look in the comments for model suggestions
That's some VERY impressive modelling skills.
The end result looks fantastic.
Thanks DanRC! This one has been a success views-wise, it may be my one-hit-wonder! I'll have to see how the next project is received.
@@MaxAfterburner Can't wait to see it.
If this one is anything to go by, it will most likely be awesome.
Should have ordered 1/48 scale decals of the Jolly Rogers VF-84.
Ictpilot Ictpilot They are available with Tamiya’s 1/48 F-14A kit. The Jolly Rogers never used the F-14D to my knowledge.
Mark Sabo I’m pretty sure you’re thinking of the F-14B, which nearly identical. I could be wrong
Jolly Rogers with F-14 D? I don't think so! After all there is an Tamiya f-14A with Jolly Rogers decals OOB in 1/48 and the tool is good as this one. Can't see why he would do that.
@@LucienCressey I was just referring to the decals. I had ordered just a decal set decades ago for my F-14 model. Don't remember what brand it was.
A work of art as a watchmaker, i was so impressed with the handling of the spray paint and realistic end product just brilliant
Thanks Jon!
Go for the Tamiya F-4, go with Grey and Blue
Thanks Jeffrey, your support for the Grey F-4 is duly noted!
@@MaxAfterburner Just making sure, is that 1/32 Tamiya F-4 Phantom by any chance?
I'll probably stick with 1/48 scale
@@MaxAfterburner Is there one available by an 1/48?
@@chelseaK11 Ah Many thanks.
Man! The paintjob is really great!! That's looks real!
Thanks Tian!
Who else is excited for Top Gun: Maverick?
Watched it
F14 is my favorite plane. You have very strong skills. I loved model building as a kid. You are encouraging me to get back in it but learning to do it at a higher level. Thank you for sharing your ideas and skills.
Thanks Bruce, you can do it!
Imponente lástima k ya salió de servicio pero a esta scala esta super
When you were adding the black panel line wash I thought your weathering was overkill but the final reveal was impressive. Your skills are top shelf.
Thanks oot 🙂
EA-6B Prowler
Thanks, it's another suggestion that is making the rounds currently!
Another great build. Love the use of narration, provision of facts around the aircraft and the soothing music. It never ceases to amaze me that the grey body is painted black then morphs back into grey with the layering. I’d love to see an F-4 as an upcoming project.
Thanks so much gcm747, I'm happy that you like the overall format of the videos. I have your vote down for the F-4 and I will be starting my next project late this week.
F-100 Super Sabre!
Now that's a different request! Noted on the suggestion list :-)
@@MaxAfterburner Thanks! :-)
Stunning...no other word for it, love the authenticity you put into all your projects. I've not modelled for near 25 years, but am now certainly rethinking that...you've kick started the enjoyment I used to get in seeing a model go from many pieces on sprues, to a finished piece of work...thank you!!!!
Thanks again Tippo. The materials and kits have certainly changed over the years, it's almost a completely new hobby. 😄
How can such a small object bring such great satisfaction and joy!
;-)
Great build. Love the way you weather the Navy jets. Each one gets better. The dirt on that Tomcat is great. I vote Navy/ Marine Phantom.
Thanks WADIII Andrew for your continued support! The F-4 seems to be the winner already ;-)
Love your organized approach to modeling and painting!
Hi Fred, thanks, I'm glad you liked it. This was one of my favorite builds construction-wise and it remains by far my most popular video. 😃
Got an F14A coming in the post. Was interesting and helpful seeing how you tackled this. Looking forward to your next video
Hi Charlie, thanks so much and best wishes on your Tomcat project! 😃
Magnificent... here in Brazil we appreciatte your job.
Thank you Fernando 🙂
nicely done, i appreciate the commentary, the music, and the information captions on top.
Thanks Matthew, I'm glad you enjoyed it 😀
Great finish, your shading and layering technique is outstanding. This approach works as well on aircraft models as it does on tank models.
Thanks Daniel 😀
A1 Job..!! Love that Kit and TOMCAT..👏🏻👏🏻😍
Hi Carlos, thanks! Everyone loves a Tomcat! 😃
You’re definitely level 10 when it comes to this awesome!!
Thanks Dustin, you're too kind!
I really need to get myself this D version now :)
It's a great kit Scale Hangar 182, keep up your great work! 😊
Your talent is inspiring. Love watching people build models. As a mini painter, there are brushes out there that would allow you to do the needle work. I’m not suggesting this though if you like the needle, as the results speak for themselves. Amazing work!
Thanks Cereth Painting!
fascinating... i never thought of using a sewing needle as a brush.... my next kit will have much much more detail, thanks to you!
Hi Aidan, glad to hear you found something useful for your own projects! Thanks for watching!
That looks incredible..realistic weathering. Awesome build
Thanks Eduard! I think the "used" appearance is the most fun to create and look at.
@@MaxAfterburner what did you use for your panel wash and what did you use to remove the excess
That level of detail and effort you put in is amazing
Thank you Medarr!
I always find your videos so relaxed, engaging and professional at the same time.
Thanks, I'm thrilled you're enjoying them! It's great to read the positive feedback and that you're getting personal value from them.
nice build out, I still remember back when Hasegawa and Tamiya were still buying old worn out moulds from other companies, and sometimes buying a kit and after opening it not having the full kit, ( lots of times there would be a panel of parts for a completely different kit, )
Wow, that's kind of scary!
@@MaxAfterburner , yeah, in a way it was, but since I was doing a lot of kit-bashing, it came in handy, lol!
thats a beautiful piece of art you created.
Thanks yamete kudasai!
Only just found your channel (whilst searching-out 1:48 F-14 builds). Very impressive build etc, but more than that, is the presentation, lighting camera-work etc. Bl**dy good all around and very watchable even if I wasn't already a scale-modeller !!
Best from NZ.
Thanks so much Ian, I'm thrilled to read your positive comments, it means a lot!
When I was a little kid, my father and I built a 1:48 Tomcat from Revell. Painted it exceedingly badly, though, and your video right here gave me deep wish to try and find that exact model again and do it properly this time :D
Hi fredmachine, there are some sites out there that sell vintage model kits. Maybe you can find that special one and relive the memories!
@@MaxAfterburner Possibly. I think I found the correct one (Revell 4540, although it was first released in 1986, making it maybe a bit too old), but I'll make sure what it was when I visit my parents over Christmas. And then I'll possibly make it happen. I'll sure watch this video over and over again to learn from you :)
Once again you’ve created a masterpiece. Well done! I vote for a grey phantom next.
Thanks Cole, the F-4 is definitely popular among the voters so far!
Thank you for quick and detailed build. I vote for the F-4 Phantom II grey color
Thanks Gleber!
I think your Tomcat looks really great! And my suggestion is a Blackhawk helicopter.
Thanks Putuplasts! I think your Blackhawk suggestion is really excellent, I hadn't even thought of doing a helicopter :-)
Unreal...This is fantastic work. You have serious skills
Thanks michael_anthony 😀
Great work. I knew a guy who built models with that kind of detail when I was a kid.
Thanks Matt 🙂
This is a fantastic model and you did an excellent job.
Thanks, I'm glad for your comment, ssplintergirl!
Best build vid I've seen. Lots of great detail info. Only fault I could see was maybe how clean the canopy frame is. Looks like it's never seen weather.
Thanks very much Mat! I did a little weathering on the frame, but not on the transparency. I used a grey wash to bring out some of the screw heads, but it's hard to see on the video.
I have adopted a similar 3-color shading for all of my military builds, it gives plenty of control.
After trying to panel line my f/a-18c recently with Tamiya's panel line accent, I felt like it was a viable but somewhat tedious process requiring a large number of specialized q-tips to get good results (well at 1/72 scale anyways). I'm impressed with the results you got with pastels here with water cleanup and regular, non-space age q-tips. I know what I'm trying next time!
😇
@@MaxAfterburner When you do your pastel panel wash before decals, do you ever have issues with the decals not clinging down into the panel lines properly? I haven't tried it yet but was wondering if that might be a concern.
If the application of the pastels is too thick or aggressively rubbed on it can affect the decals. You can add another gloss coat prior to the decal step if you're unsure.
@@MaxAfterburner Okay, thanks! I'll experiment with it a bit.
Damn man. Well done. You done a brilliant job. I just bought this kit. Can't wait to start building it.
Hi Nathan, thanks! It's a great kit and I hope you have lots of fun with it 😃
Jeez Max, you took me back 50 years. I gave up modeling when real life called, but now I've got the bug again. My masterpiece was a BF109 that I really researched. When my dad saw it he couldn't believe I had done it, lmao. He was so concerned something might happen to it he asked if he could have it (he fought in WWII of course). I know he kept on his dresser at least until the Army got me, he passed and I never saw it again. I'm going to start shopping tomorrow. o.O Dude that is nice work.
Thanks Sean, I hope your rekindled interest brings back great memories of your father and the hobby.
Awesome video. Specially liked the historical facts you included while building the model. I will try to grab one of these and follow your steps!
Thanks Cylon six! I try to add another dimension to the presentation with the extra info. The Cylons were created by man. They rebelled.
Amazing work.....kudos to the efforts put to create this jet.....just sublime
Ramnath Iyer, thanks for the wonderful comments!
I watched the entire video, this was really nice. You are really good at detailing and coloring it, well done, I really liked watching. I also liked how you give info about jet and history as well.
Thanks so much for your kind and thoughtful comments Fatih!
Unbelievable paint job!
Thanks William, I'm glad you liked it!
Outstanding job. I cant believe they would make an F14 model without AIM-54s though. The jet was built as a platform for them.
Hi, they do have the AIM-54s (among a lot of other weaponry) in the kit, but I chose a load out configuration that did not include the Phoenix.
@@MaxAfterburner Ah ok. Once again, great work.
Hey Max. Nicely built F-14. The Marine Corps flew these as well. I was in the marine corps and got to see it first hand. They are an awesome aircraft.
Thanks James for your kind comments and especially for your service!
Tamyia is best build ever..
Nice build tnx
Hi Marcel, one of the best fitting kits I've ever come across for sure. Thanks for watching!
wow! you have an eye for details and amazing patience. great work!
Thanks Niranjan!
Beautiful job on the TomCat!
Thanks from "Mav" and "Goose" ;-)
I visited your channel good work on your techniques, presentation and especially your patience. There is never a simple way to obtain independent details without the nuances of masking or taping or painting or marking with ink and refraining from over doing it or breaking or loosing parts in process. 👍
Hi Maverick, thank you and cheers! 😊
Ur videos are so therapeutic for me, it's like my stress reliever, also I love ur voice!, I could fall asleep to it 😂
Hi TheDuke139, glad you're enjoying the "sessions" 😇
@@MaxAfterburner Do more please lol, ur my cure for stress😏
One heck of a build my man.... First time being here and wetness your talent and boy do I love it... I subscribe and rung your bell.... I'll be watching your old videos and your future videos...
Thanks TowMaters, I hope you enjoy the past projects as well as the future ones coming up!
Great build ! looks very close to the real thing !
Hi Joe, glad you liked the look of it! Thanks for watching!
Max....Once again you have outdone yourself. Thank-you for posting this video. You have given me the tips and confidence to do my build now. lol. Great video once again.
I'm very happy to hear that Edward! You can do it! Thanks for your feedback and have fun!
The VF-2 Bounty Hunters is probably my number 1 or most favorite Squadrons of the F-14s.
The "Fighting Two"!
Wow just wanted to drop in and say you have awesome scale modeling content. And also very helpful. I think one of the best channels out there! Thanks, this is really helping me out with my first kit
Hi Ramtin -s, that's great to hear and I appreciate the comments! 😃
Nice work. I am just about to start the Tamiya F14A. Thanks for the video.
Thanks, I hope there was some useful material that you can use for your build!
Prob best model I have ever seen
This guy puts too much I effort these vids
He earned my respect ✊
Thanks Kitty
Awesome skills, congrats! My vote is for the Bismark!
Thanks Fabio! The Bismarck is not far on the horizon ;-)
Amazing and mind blowing details 🤩😍❤👍
Thank you! Cheers! 😊
The VF-213 would have been cool even if the plane looked two new and clean.
VF and now VFA-213 was assigned to CVW-11 during the 80’s and 90’s. Of the two F-14 squadrons assigned to that airwing during my enlistment 213 remains and transitioned to the F/A-18F Super Hornet. VF-114 was decommissioned during the BRAC of 1993-94 drawdown. 213 was represented most recently at the ALL Female aircrew flyover for the funeral of Capt. Rosemary Mariner the first tactical fighter jet pilot for the US Navy. She was with the A-7 as part of a fleet adversary training squadron. I wish I had the patience for the intricate detail work like you do!
Bravo Zulu on a fantastic build! BTW - thanks for the tip on using a sewing needle for precision paint application!!
Thanks much Calvin 😉
