Thank you so much for this. I made 6 traps last summer by using this tutorial and I caught a total of 423 ground squirrels last season. The first day in one of the traps I had a total of 12 when I went to check on it. I am making 4 more and getting rid of these little devils once and for all!!!
Thanks for the detailed and concise instructions. I live in South Florida and these squirrels are just a menace. Every year they devastate my mango and avocado trees. Well, with your video, I've found a sure fire solution to humanely reduce their numbers in my area. Off to getting the supplies to make at least two traps. Thanks again... Cheers!
You made a GREAT VIDEO! I use to own the Squirrelinator Trap and it caught hundreds of squirrels but it was cheaply made. The cage would bend and rust, just a real piece of junk made in China. It is also $80. Yours is HUNDRED TIMES BETTER, WELL MADE. Easy fun project that most people can do that costs less than $50 for the first one and much less for any others that one makes as you will already have the tools and clips and left over cage wire. Thanks again for making this video!!!!!
EXCELLENT instructions for an AMERICAN MADE Squirrllanator trap, I knew this could be done but I was in too big of a rush to get rid of as many of these tree rats as possible, so I bought the SHY NA produced ones THINKING I was buying American made ones
Same. No quarter for the bastas. If this cage doesn’t work, I’m becoming a Bio Engineer to develop a weapon against squirrels. They are from the pit of hell. It’s my job to return them.
I’ve helped my dad who is a construction worker with decades of experience. While working with him I’ve seen the complete destruction of houses. Chewing holes everywhere in the roof, chewing through the a/c lines going into the house as well as shredding the ductwork. There was one house that he nicknamed/called the squirrel house because there was 15 squirrels they removed from the attic. Afterwards they had to completely redo electrical, ac ductwork, insulation, the ceilings, the eaves as well as patch spots on the shingled roof. They were pissed & started chewing other areas trying to get back in, so we sprayed the outside of the house down with cayenne pepper hot sauce, they decided to move elsewhere. He also had a house that burned down & it was determined it was wiring in the attic that was damaged from squirrels.
Yessss an excellent trap! Thank you! So far I’ve caught every single one of the squirrels that I’ve seen in my yard - a total of 9 in 7 days. I made it 5” tall and used 1”x1” wire though because the critters here are super fat. Thanks again!
Yeah, they priced themselves out of making money, the Havahart single door is $74.99 at the local hardware store, this trap in the video looks easy enough to build.
Hey, i was making this myself and realized that rather than cutting a hole in the top for a door, i can just turn the whole cage upside down to let them out. :-)
Update... squirrel population is on the decline. Hopefully I will get to enjoy some eggplant, cauliflower, broccoli etc... rather than feeding the squirrels.
Fantastic! Just Brilliant! Would have to spend 400 bucks to buy 6 of them. Damn expensive and not worth the money! Rip off! Am going to making them this weekend for sure! Many thanks.
@@SoatMon Ordered the 10ftx3ft wire mesh from Home Depot ($25) and 2 lbs J Clips and Plier from Amazon for 35 bucks. Will be building them this weekend.

This is strange but happy. Around our place every so often when the squirrels get to be so many a family of hawks moves in. Problem solved! They weren't there last year but hopefully they will make a visit this summer again. The come an stay for about 6 weeks then move on. What a deal! Hope you are having enough work at your place of work again. We just take it a week at a time. Stay well and safe, be careful and thank you for the video.
I'm jealous I wish a hawk would come and get mine. I caught six in my trap and I think my problem is solved... for now. I think the hospital is going to open back up the first of May. Hopefully this is about over.
Thank you for the very informative and well presented video. I am going to make one of these based o your design. It looks like it will work very well. Thanks again for your time in making this video and sharing it.
Thank you! I am going to build 2 of these this afternoon. It'll be my secret project. The wife thinks these vile creatures are cute. The dog and I and have a different opinion. I will catch and release but it will be many, many miles away from the house. Stay safe and thanks for posting.
My wife HAD the same opinion until these rodents helped themselves to all her cauliflower and broccoli from her garden last weekend. Now I’ve built 2 of these. An old timer at the farm supply told me he knows for a fact that squirrel will find their way back even relocated 12 miles away. He suggested sautéed in butter with onions. I’m not so sure about that one.
@@itsasickness4939 Here is a easier method. Roast whole over wood fire, then chop into pieces and add chopped onions and spices for a great gravy based stew.
Ahh! I was looking at the ratinator trap and trying to figure out how it was made but could see the door mechanism clearly, but found your excellent video showing PRECISELY how to build one! Great video. One suggestion for holding the doors closed...How about using those rods you used for the handle? Just make a bend or loop at one end and weave them through the grates. Just yank it out when it's time to release the critters.
I don't know if it will catch rats I caught 6 squirrels and no rats even though it was left out over night but the corn I baited it with wasn't gone either. I guess you would have to try. If they went into it I don't think they would get out but that's just a guess.

If you have had wiring chewed in half on several of you vehicles as I have you will soon change your opinion of squirrels.
Amen

It worked great. I caught six and haven't seen anymore yet. Thanks Howder!
I didn't need the side doors to cover the entrances. I quickly quieted them down, once I walked up on the cage..
I was wondering what would be a good bait that you all are using?
I'm thinking sunflower seeds.
I think sunflower seeds would work great. I used whole corn. Whatever they are used to will work.
Nice job. Does it work properly?
Yes it works great. I caught all the grey squirrels I needed to move. (about 10... not all at one time) :)
@@SoatMon can you make me some of those?
Great video! What gauge is the wire mesh you are using?
Thanks! Sorry I'm not sure what gauge it is.
Going to try using this for the mongooses around here
Awesome, let me know how it goes!
It's easier to release the squirrels if you put the release door in one of the corners. I make the trap doors 2 inches longer too.
Thanks for the suggestion, I can see how that would help for live release.
Would the wire gaps be too large to trap chipmunks? If so, what dimension welded wire would you suggest for them?
Probably. I would probably use 1/2 by 1 inch wire for chipmunks.
@@SoatMon we'll give that a try, thanks for the great video
Nice work ty
You're welcome Ricky!
I believe it's too short. My squirrels, if even interested, reach in from above and feast with no trouble. I have the Amazon version of this trap.
I know lm kinda late on this but could you use hog rings instead of jclips to fasten it together?
I wouldn't as wire panels would move around alot and possible keep the doors from closing behind the squirrels.
Thanks for this information. I have a question. Which gauge wire fence did you use? 14 or 16?
I don't know but either would work.
Thanks
dude, where's the rest of your finger? Combat wound from the squirrels?
LOL! I don't know where it is, I haven't seen it in years.
Does this trap work for ground squirrels only or for any other breed of squirrels?
I didn't use it for ground squirrels, I used it for grey squirrels that live in trees.
@@SoatMon thank you!

Rat/squirrel... same thing. Try it.
@@jagboy69 true but rats tend to be much smarter.
So you just copied the Squirllanator AOK .... so what was YOUR total cost??
For grey squirrels I made mine 6 inches tall. Worked better.
This is my thinking
Could this be changed into a rabbit trap.
Possibly but you would be better off with a regular trap like a Havahart trap that they sell online and places like Tractor Supply.
what gauge is the wire
Sorry I don't know. As small as it is I don't think it would matter.
You can also get better, and easier to use, J clip pliers online.

I make my traps no wider than 18 inches on one side. Easy to dunk into a Rubbermaid trashcan.
