World's Best Squirrel Trap: A Little Modification of a Live Trap is All it Takes

- What is the best squirrel trap?
It's hard to beat a wire cage live trap with some good bait in it. We use Safeguard and Tomahawk brand live traps made of wire. We are not paid endorsers.
But, to make them the world's best, Ryan shows a couple of very simple modifications in this video.
Wrapping the traps with duct tape and adding a bait platform are two very simple and inexpensive modifications that will make a big difference.
And after you catch that first one and get some natural squirrel smell in them, you're squirrel traps will be the world's best too. - Навчання та стиль
very smart idea from someone who obviously knows what he is talking about. I am wrapping my trap with duct tape now!
OK! So first of all...thanks for the tips and for making this video. I was using a similar trap and never thought about using one door and duct tape. Last night I used duct tape like you showed, and put the bait in the back of the cage...This morning there was a furry intruder caught in the cage. I had tried for a few days and he kept triggering the cage and not going into it. This method worked like a charm! Thanks again, and keep making nice videos! Peace!
Thanks!
Thank you!! I was never able to catch a squirrel in my small trap. As a matter of fact it has sat in the shed for years while I did manage to catch them in a large Havahart. Ran across this vid while browsing and waiting to catch a renegade skunk that's been a terror(got it). Duct taped, used a piece of white syrofoam for bait bench, set out this morning and it caught one of the two squirrels out there this morning inside of an hour! Big trap was sitting right beside it. Just outstanding!
edit: And another this evening!
Thanks for sharing your success! Good job to you.
He's correct! As a handyman I've done a lot of critter trapping...
👍
Thanks a lot for the great advice ..I'm gonna try using all your tips...
Thank you so much for this post. The red squirrels that are so persistent to chew into my home were impossible to get rid of. I tried everything. I tape wrapped my trap that previously didn't work and got awesome results !
My single door trap was purchased at my local farm supply store. About 20 bucks.
Bait with apple chunk at the back of the trap and small apple pieces leading into the trap. Can't wait till spring to see if it works on the chipmunks as well.
Glad it was helpful! Well done.
Great tips thanks for sharing your knowledge.
No worries!
Nice pick up
We need to see more of your videos on a regular basis
👍Well done thank you for the wisdom
Great tips. I had them get into my porch roof already and had to take the whole ceiling of the porch out. Found a nest full. Now they got in again into my attic. They chew right through the cedar. I wasn’t sure if it was on the roof or IN the roof. I have limited access but I saw it today. No idea if its just the one or what.
Expert
thanks
You're welcome!
"The squirrel was sleeping inside and it didn't set the door off and that surprised me and that's why it's the best squirrel trap in the world" ......haha not the best way to advertise is.
Anyway, interesting idea about the duct tape. 👍
Method to the madness
I’d like one
"The best set is a reset." Right on about not cleaning and wanting odors.
Right?!
Great videos. I have major Squirrel issues in my attic. Tall house. Entry/exit thru gable about 40ft up. You think I can convert a Havahart 2 door trap into something like this? I already have three which is why I’m asking. Thought about keeping them locked open and inserting a one way door. Just don’t want to have to go up the 40ft to install. Lol
Ryan,
Practically all two door traps can be used as one-door traps. Havahart traps can be used as one door traps just look at their video here: ua-cam.com/video/LHvaQnvdTlg/v-deo.html
Putting a one way door trap over the entry/exit hole at the gable vent is highly recommended. Just a one way door (squirrels not caught and removed) is not recommended. Squirrels that get evicted almost always chew their way back in. Trapping them looks something like this: ua-cam.com/video/gSd2puXO6g0/v-deo.html&feature=emb_rel_end
The high up work is not fun but it also means it is not as easy to tackle for the average homeowner. Needless to say, be careful.
Don't forget to replace/repair/cover the damaged gable vent after the trouble making squirrels are out. A damaged vent will attract other squirrels, raccoons, or birds.
Thanks for watching.
Ryan:
How did you make out with this ??
A way to lead the squirrel into the trap is to smear bait on a path to the entrance of the trap from wherever they are coming from (e.g. a favoured tree; hole in a fence; bird feeder; ...).
I'm using a similar style trap to the one shown in your video and have caught 1 squirrel in it, though there is still another 1 squirrel about that is not going into the trap, I know this as I it is still digging holes and burying nuts in our garden.
Would I need to relocate the trap to another part of our garden or do something to clean the scent of the previosu caught squirrel from the trap in order to catch the other one?
TIA
Two thoughts here (from my own experience). Contradictory, I'm afraid, but there you go - make of them what you will.
On the one hand, yes, as the video says, in general the scent of squirrel will attract others. Inquisitive squirrels will want to investigate because of the general squirrel smell - "It seems like other squirrels have been here before me, so it's probably safe enough". Therefore the argument would be, don't clean it out and I wholeheartedly agree with this as the general rule.
However, in your specific case, you've been trying to trap two specific squirrels in a set area, namely your garden. It might be (and I say "might" because I don't know, of course) that the first squirrel you trapped was the dominant one. The big bully squirrel who constantly beat up the other one and took his food.
In that case, the second squirrel might be thinking, "I'm not going any where near that - it doesn't just smell of squirrel, which would be OK, but specifically of Big Bully squirrel and every time I've tussled with him I've come off worse."
In which case the argument might be - do clean out the trap!
Who knows? You can but try it and see!
I made a trap of a 4 in PVC pipe and squirrels are scared to get inside the dark pipe, getting in just partially and come out. After I bought open cage trap I caught the squirrel in couple of hours.
Pro Tip: Change it to 1.5x speed and it will still sound normal. My fellow Texans speak as calmly too.
Interesting
@@Frontlineanimalremoval Thank you! I caught my first squirrel and re-homed it! Previously, they kept using the side of the trap to eat the food. Now, one and done!
I caught a few without tape, but it's a commercial building. I put peanut butter that has a strong smell. They come inside the building now because it's getting cold. The place where the trap stays is dark when there are no people working in the building.
Wire trap just like yours. I've got large and small squirrels so far never failed. The trap is mounted on a shelf and fastened with screws. It does not move at all. Then I release them about 2 miles away in the woods.
When you release grey squirrels in the woods,
do you usually get back to the building before they do ?
I'm just curious.
I relocate them to squirrel heaven.
Need to go minimal 20 miles away to release. 2 miles is nothing for a squirrel.
Explain how do you despatch the caught squirrels?
Carbon dioxide
Just curious why you like Safeguard and Tomahawk over Havahart and others...?...Thank you...🐦
Higher quality overall.

The Havahart model 1083 EZ-set trap is the best squirrel trap I have found.
I have disposed of over 470 squirrels with 2 traps in 6 years.
what bait do you use to catch squirrels, please?
Did you relocate them…to squirrel heaven?
@@Skrimpz562 I use peanuts and peanut butter
@@Skrimpz562 I use the sunflower seeds we put out for the birds as that is what attracts the squirrels in the first place.
What is the suitable baits for squerrel?
Nuts and peanut butter
Recommendations and modification advice well taken...enticing (tried peanut butter, peanuts, walnuts, apples etc.) them to go into the trap is another matter all together. Any suggestions? Our squirrels see the cage (camouflaged many different ways) and run the other way...
Sound like super wary squirrels. You could try to them to the trap again: Bait given freely outside but close to the trap. Once that is eaten regularly, the bait could be moved to the trap entrance. After they are comfortable with that you could wire open the trap and put the bait in right spot but trap is not going off. Once the squirrels are conditioned to the trap not being a danger, then let the traps function freely. Good luck.
You can only catch large numbers of grey squirrels during specific times of the year.
They prefer acorns to peanuts or peanut butter, so if there is an oak tree anywhere nearby,
you probably wont catch many grey squirrels in the fall when acorns are plentiful.
They have an insatiable appetite for acorns and will ignore peanuts when acorns are available.
I've tried vacuuming my yard of acorns but that is a waste of time because many more
fresh acorns will fall within 24 hours
In the winter, they are not active in northern climates and leaving your trap set outside
is usually a waste of time and energy, unless it is an unusually warm day.
I have my squirrel traps in very close proximity to my bird feeders
and that is probably why they are lulled into a false sense of security.
They probably think with all the birds chowing down relentlessly,
they have discovered the best free banquet in the neighborhood.
In the last 6 years I have disposed of over 470 grey squirrels but
I get most of them in the early AM in the spring and summer.
If you are a late sleeper leave the trap outside over night and
hope nothing steals the bait during the night.
If you rise early, put the trap out at sunrise.
Once it gets too hot outside they retire for the day.
I seldom catch any grey squirrels after high noon.
if you ever buy another squirrel trap, go with the Havahart model # 1083
EZ-set trap. That is the best trap for grey squirrels by a wide margin.
But you have to buy it online. Lowes and Home Depot do not stock that trap
for some crazy reason.

I have millions of acorns here in Indiana and Acorns are the last thing they will eat!
What brand trap is that you are using. I am not fond of havahart
That is either a Safeguard or a Tomahawk. We use both for that type of squirrel trap. They are good products.
@@Frontlineanimalremoval being delivered tomorrow. Going to mod it so.
The Havahart model #1083 EZ-set trap is the best trap for grey squirrels by a wide margin.
It can be set in less than 10 seconds and it is never set off by birds.
I'm pretty sure they have a patent on their EZ-set design which is why
no other trap uses that design. You can only buy that 1 door trap online.
What is the best bait for gray squirrels?
Walnuts and peanut butter
Tom Hanks has a side gig!
Yep, I saw the similarities also in Hanks younger days
the squirrels chewed my five bird houses and started eating the eggs and baby birds, I called the MN dnr and they said once the squirrels like eating proteen, do not release, they will only devistate another area of birds and the birds are more important
I would think the best time to wrap this with tape is when you have a squirrel that's been caught, in it.
Wrapping before is advised
What's the best bait to use?
Peanut butter with a couple of nuts in it is hard to beat
@@Frontlineanimalremoval Thank you, Sir. I was thinking peanut butter but wasn't sure.
This is almost theatrical, scene created, bait exposed on the platform, which is extremely funny to me, but if it works it works.
Do not live trap squirrels. When you "humanly" release them, they are beaten, killed by predators, starve, or go to someone else's place where they are summarily dispatched.
We don't recommend relocation for the reasons you point out.
