    The scary part is that I’ve flown that airplane as a first officer. All of NAM’s 737-500s originally served with Continental and were parked soon after the CO/UA merger. The interior of the plane hasn’t changed at all except for the seat covers. The didn’t even bother to take the old Continental ship number placard off the cockpit door…incredible.

    Hello Dear Noel, retired (by injury) Continental Airlines flight attendant here. The original seating in the mid 90's was a dark blue/black leather so these are definitely not the originals. Funny......as stews we LOVED the 500. 8 pax in FC and only about 100 in YC. The galley up front in FC where I worked was a dream....plenty of room for everything. We referred to it at CAL as the Barbie Dream Jet. As a fellow stew once said...."Love the 500. Just about the time you break a sweat, you're done." Happy travels, my friend. P.S. NAM is named after the Grandfather of the owner, Chandra Lie. His first name was Nam. He started the very first flight schools, crew training schools, and airplane maintenance schools in Indonesia. He also founded Sriwijaya Airlines. Both carriers fly old, previously owned, 737-500's but they are well maintained. One of the best Boeing maintenance facilities in Southeast Asia is located at Soekarno Hatta, Jakarta. Even Singapore Airlines contracts out to Garuda Boeing maintenance. NAM is not a airline with a Part 121 AOC. It's a Part 135 AOC Charter business. Thus, they must gain permission to fly that route from the Ministry of Transportation just days in advance. They can schedule flights, crew and sell tickets weeks in advance but they still must ask permission to fly just prior to departure.

    • @09shadowjet

      The maintenance facility at Soekarno Hatta airport is owned by Garuda Indonesia, not Sriwijaya Air group who owns NAM Air. In fact, Sriwijaya Air group had a fallout with Garuda Indonesia. Also, one of Sriwijaya Group's 737-500 (PK-CLC) crashed last year, cause of the crash? Autothrottle failure leading to pilot error.

      @@09shadowjet They stopped the partnership agreement with Garuda Airlines in 2019. At the time they owed over $100M to GM. To fly the airplanes they would have to be maintained at a Boeing certified facility in Singapore, KL or Bangkok. And because of the age of the fleet, the DGCA would inspect and verify all work. (25 year rule) I doubt they parted with GM. It's easier to pay the money owed than to take the airplanes out of service and fly them to KL, Singapore or Bangkok. But, I'll have to check it out. 😀

    Finally, someone from outside Indonesia reviewed NAM air. I myself flown with them once back in 2018 from Yogyakarta, the only things I recalled about that flight is the fact that the flight got delayed by 3 hours from the intended 8 PM departure time (so much for that 92% OTP, thanks to the 11 PM departure time i slept just after takeoff, and only woke up once the plane had arrived), got the snack on ground thanks to said delay (got a bottle of water and some bread), the fact that I flew on PK-NAL, and the cabin being very retro looking (interestingly they merely use seat covers, as i believe i recall seeing Velcro on top of the seats). Thank god you flew in Business Class, Economy is even worse. My colleague beside me could barely even fit on the seat, heck even Lion Air had better seat pitch i think. Btw, the in-flight service you got is exactly the same as in Economy, since Biz on NAM (so does Sriwijaya Air, the parent, on its -500s) is merely just a seat upgrade you can get for like 100 - 200k IDR iirc. In conclusion: only fly with NAM Air if you want to fly on their 737-500s, otherwise just book with other airlines such as TransNusa, Pelita Air, and Super Air Jet, all 3 are brand new airlines in Indonesia, you will be fine with Citilink and AirAsia as well.

It seems that a fairly large cohort from Air Canada corporate were on the flight and it quickly became a cocktail party in the aisles. I won't say the crew joined in, but they were obviously reticent to ask their fellow employees to return to their seats. Word finally got back to the captain and he requested that the cocktail party come to an end. At least the flight attendants kept up with their service priorities.

    Shades of Sempati, the airline I flew quite often between Jakarta and Bali for business trips to Guam when I was working in Bogor some 2-3 decades ago. They had the same lackadaisical attitude. Continental had a direct route from Bali to Guam (the only only U.S. carrier that had direct service from Indonesia to U.S. soil). That one was discontinued a couple of years before the Continental-United merger, which really broke my heart.

    Nice one Noel! Wow, didn't know that they still sell those seats as 'business class'.
    Anyhow, a 30 mins delay on NAM may be considered as an achievement. I flew them a few times in the past few years, all of them are delayed betwen 1 to 4 hours. One got delayed for five hours before we boarded and eventually DISEMBARKED since the destination airport is closed, and ofc the flight then got canceled.
    Today, they seems to operate two (or one?) aircraft only, with pretty high utilisation. Which ofc means high risk of disruptions. IMO, Lion Air is somewhat more reliable since they have more schedules, so in case of disruption you can be reaccommodated on other flights including either Batik or Super Air Jet operated flights.

    • @jjryan1352
      @jjryan1352 Рік тому

      How do you know if the delay is the airlines fault? It can be due to weather issues, flight congestion, lack of airport staff, waiting for connecting passengers, refueling, luggage loading issues. A technical issue with the aircraft is just one possibility.

      @@standard-carrier-wo-chan their strategy coming to bite them. before covid they're strategy is to operate cheap, that means that other than only 2 900er that they now lost all of their plane is second hand, okelah the 800 is modern, but the rest?, 500's, 20+ year old classic plane with technology that is far behind
      now, covid forces them to reduce planes and staff, then SJ 182 crash, not only in the worst possible time at the height of covid, also but also is now proven to be because partly the fault of the old and malfunctioning boeing 737-500's
      then as aviation and human progress continues, it would be probably much more fuel efficient if back then they order new planes rather than keeping old classic jets, had they order fuel efficient planes 5 years ago, the fuel efficiency and comfort would be of huge benefit now
      on a personal level, i and i'm sure many others just don't find them interesting anymore, like there's not much reason you fly sriwijaya unless you want to fly sriwijaya, their routes are limited and smaller compared to competitions
