      Don't worry about it too much... honestly they don't bite that hard when playing they might very rarely bite you a bit too hard .... but if you train them like this guy showed you it will be fine. My former girlfriend has always kept ferrets and she has quite small hands and she does just fine with them. Just be aware of their health issues, and that they don't live as long as a cat or dog usually.

    My ferret got to be really old, he lived 13 years! He was the best, I miss him a lot. We rescued him when he was about 5 from someone who kept him in a small wire cage and had him in a harness that was way too small. We kept the cage but took the door off and just put his sleeping stuff in it so he could get away from the dogs (who treated him like he was a puppy, they got really depressed when he died) I've wanted another one since, but I've since had kids and I'm waiting to get one until they're a little older. When we threw out our couch we found his stash of socks and shiny things inside the bottom of the couch a few years after when we moved 😂

By the time we rescued him he was set in his ways and wouldn't eat anything but cat food, which is normally not the best to feed them but is better than most other pet foods. We ended up just buying him one of the more expensive brands after reading through the ingredients and vitamin levels and everything. They do make specialized ferret food as well, though. You'll have to research different brands because I'm sure that, like any pet food, some are just cheap fillers, but you should be able to have a perfectly healthy ferret on a diet of mostly that. I'm not an expert by any means and the recommendations for any pet changes over time as more information becomes readily available, so definitely do some of your own research as well. Chicken is a pretty cheap way to go in at least giving a cat a partial diet of meat. Hearts and legs and such are cheap split into feeding sized bags and freeze. Each day move one to the fridge to be ready for the next days feeding. You'll see an incredible difference in the cat, health skin coat will be better along with their energy levels over dry. On a good note though, when they are happy and playful you will hear them make a "dooking" or "clucking" sound its very cute and you know they are having a good time when you hear this.

      I want one and am watching educated people talk about having a ferret, I was wrong with this guy. You can't pin any animal limbs while holding them, it causes health issues for the animal in the long run and in fact shortens their life. Have your arm under them so they feel more comfortable. It's animal basics 101. And absolutely no holding any adult animal by it's scruff unless it's a newborn. If you don't have the basic care rules for animals why own a pet in the first place. Even service animals and emotional support animals require that basic care.

I didn't think much of it, but they were telling me how to train them and both of them were grabbing our ferrets and trying to hold them by the tail and hissing really loud into their ears.
    I told them that whatever they do is their business, but I won't be selling them one to someone that does that kind of behavior to them. It's one thing to train, it's another to abuse.

    We have been rescuing ferrets in Texas for 15 years and have had over 35 ferrets in that time. Wanted to mention a few things. First, that weird noise was your ferret "hissing" they do that when they are irritated. Apparently he didn't like you grabbing the back of him. Other noise they make is they will "churtle", this is when they are having the time of their life and playing and are "really happy". One other thing you will see but only rarely, is you might see your ferret wag it's tail. Like I said it will be "very rare" but it's really funny when they do it. One point you missed is people should never own just one ferret. They are social creatures and a human can't give them all the attention they need. If you have two or more ferrets than they play with each other and are a more stable ferret, and happier. Three things all ferret owners should keep is a bottle of Caro, Ferretone, and Ferretlax. Also a bottle of Bitter Apple helps for a bad biter, usually any time we have had one it stopped the ferret from any "bad" biting within a couple of days. Another note is ferrets have a short life span compared to your regular dog or cat pet. They usually live between 6 to 8 years but are considered geriatric at the age of 5. Our oldest ferret however lived 11 years. Always keep an eye on your ferret, especially if you hadn't seen him/her in a while. Ferrets go from healthy and playful, to not healthy and dying within a short period of time. If your ferret is acting sick you need to get them medical attention RIGHT AWAY or else they can die very fast due to their high metabolism. Don't wait a day or two like you would your cat or dog hoping it will clear up because in most cases it will not. One other note is ferrets sleep VERY HEAVILY. You can pick them up, they'll be limp and look dead and won't wake up. This can be scary, but they are just sleeping. We actually have one ferret who sleeps so deeply, he goes into a sort of hybernation, his breathing slows WAY down, his gums become pale and no matter what you do he doesn't wake up, then later he just pops awake! Honestly that boy scared us the first time it happened because we had no doubt he was dead, and he WASN'T. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Ferrets are AWESOME and so are ferret lovers. I FORGOT the most important thing! NEVER buy a ferret as a pet for your kid. Absolute majority of ferrets we have rescued was because a parent thought a ferret would be a great pet for their child, and it is NOT!

    • @alenabuhler7510
      @alenabuhler7510 8 років тому

      absolutely agree on all of these. additionally, lots of people get ferretvite as a treat, but it shouldn't be used that way. it is sweet and should be given more as an appetite starter. Ferretone is much better. I haven't heard of ferretlax or Caro though. what are those?

    • @spawncap9009
      @spawncap9009 8 років тому +1

      +Alena Buhler Ferretlax is a laxative sold for ferrets. Caro, is Caro that people use for cooking. Ferrets can have sugar level problems which can make them stop eating and drinking, and they generally just crash (go into convulsions which is dangerous for a ferret). Rubbing Caro on their gums can snap them right out of it. We learned this about 5 years after rescuing ferrets, I think we learned of it by looking in a book we use to look up information all the time in called "Ferrets for Dummies". It is an invaluable book. After rescuing ferrets for as long as we have that poor book's cover has fallen off and the pages are torn and used from all the time we have referenced it.

      I think you meant "Karo" as in Karo Syrup, which is a thick, light simple syrup that you can buy to make desserts or add to drinks or even baby formula. It is used often when infants have hard stools, too. My son and daughter in law had 3 wonderful ferrets for years and they had to do this with the little girl because her blood sugar would always drop quickly. Very interesting video, though and great reply.

I rescued a ferret that was the only ferret in his house and I can see a huge difference in his mental health now that he has other ferrets to play with. I have 3 ferrets. They do everything togather, they sleep,eat,drink, and play togather. They also do not stay in a cage. My house is ferret proof , which takes takes a lot of work.

    This is one of a few videos out there that actually have great information about these little smart fellers!! Sean or is it Shawn hissed at you because he was getting mad/frustrated! We have had ferrets (first one then multiples) since 1994. We currently have 3 "boyses" They can be soo much fun to let them out of the cage to play!! Toss them around and they start jumping up and down and backwards then all over! (war dance) Then they make quiet clucking noises (duking) which means they're happy! I have 4 ferret tips. 1: Wash their bedding frequently. This greatly cuts down on the "gamey" smell which to me is less than 1/100% as bad as going into a bathroom after someone else drops a deuce. 2: The only ferret toy they always use are plastic "tunnels" which are like dryer vents. 3: Supervise them like toddlers! Had one pull up a floor vent and go into the furnace duct work!! 4: Child proof all of your lower cabinets!
    Snoopy, Kirby, Stinky, Bandit, Binky, Winnie, Scubi have went on. Cinbad, Yoda and Augie are the boyses. Each ferret has their own personality! Some are escape artists, some are great climbers, some are trouble makers , some are just big shits, some are lovers!

If I were going to get one ferret; I have a lot of health issues that make caring for a pet for hours consistently, frequently difficult. Would it be unfair to get a ferret if I would only be able to spend a few hours a day with them, kind of like a cat? Would it be best to get two ferrets at that point? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Also, what’s the most humane/ recommended method of buying a ferret? Thanks in advance! 🖤

He potty trained instantly and roamed free in my house. Food, water, litter box, his needs were very basic more so than with most pets. Besides having a gold fish, ferrets are about as simple a pet to care for as you are going to find...

      2 hobs, 4 gills.
      Smell totally depends on your cleaning routine. I've noticed that different substrates have different odour control properties. I throughly clean once a day then poop scoop/pad change in evening. There are natural cleaners (homemade) that are effective in odour and bacteria control.
      Diet can play a part also but that more to do with poop smell than their musky wiff.
      I rarely bathe mine, it stresses the ones that dont like it too much. So its proper bath/shower twice a year and a pet form of water less shampoo once a month. Fresh bedding once a week, kind of goes without saying really...i change my own once a week as I like a fresh bed so I'm sure they appreciate it also, i know my nose does🤣. So again I say it depends on you pretty much completely. But please please please be careful if you want to mask the smell rather than take steps to eradicate. Candles, sprays and mists all leave deposits that are inhaled by us and animals that's on the house. Natural solutions are available again homemade and premade that are more suitable to your ferretdom and wont harm anyone. If you do use candles, soy candles are the way forward in that. Dont forget to place them up high. "When they seek, they shall find!"Peace

    • @earthling1984
      @earthling1984  6 років тому +9

      David Guthartz - It is obvious to me you have some issues. You come in spouting about how great you are. Yet, there is very little you mentioned wrong in this video... You mention scruffing. Well, scruffing is a very well known and used technique. It works on many types of animals. Also, if you did any research you would realize this is how mothers, siblings, uncles, etc. would calm down a feisty animal. So, I guess you don't agree with natural techniques. I don't disagree that touching the nose can work too, and of course say "no", or some other word when bit. But, you seem very one sided. I guess it's your way or the highway huh. Also, ferret care doesn't really change all that much. Sure, there are new things that come out from time to time, but really, a species doesn't really change, nor do their care requirements, very much. Then you get on my case because I don't have a bell on my ferret. lol. Like, I agree that's a fine idea. People do this with cats and dogs too. It's a pretty common practice that I think most people know they can do if they like. I personally don't care to listen to a bell all day, and, have never had an issue finding my ferret. Again, each case is different. If you live in a mansion with 20 rooms, then a bell would probably be needed for sure. Also, you get on me about shampoo. Seriousy. I guarantee you there are shampoos labled, "Ferret shampoo". I have some myself! Sure, they may be very similar to cat and dog shampoo. Using a baby shampoo, or, even just water is fine too! But really, it seems you are just trying to pick any little thing to express how intelligent you think you are. Sadly, all I saw was a person with a big head and little to give.

      Earthling1984 - Major kudos for your reply. He's very firmly seated on his high horse as a "ferret knowledgeable" person. Some people just like to toot their own horn, sadly. I find it terribly amusing. I haven't owned a ferret myself (my dog hates small animals and has killed my guinea pigs before) but my neighbour did when I was younger and I learnt a lot from being over there. Everything they did falls in line with what you spoke about in your video (apart from them choosing to put a bell on her) so I have no reason to suspect that you're misinformed or mistreating your pets.

    Ummmm...first, that "weird noise" is a "hiss". With adults, it generally means they aren't happy, while with kits it can just mean they're having fun...kinda like dooking.
    Second, in my experience with about 10 ferrets, they are not very likely to bite. "Play nibble", yes, but not really biting for real.
    Third..."wild animals...not domesticated"? Seriously? In general, the intent and much of the information is helpful, but not this point. What exactly is your definition of "domesticated"?
    In my opinion and experience, bathing more than every other month at MOST, and usually only once a quarter is all that's needed to keep the scent down. Washing their bedding WEEKLY is key. Also, quality diet and proper litter maintenance contribute highly to their odor. My fur babies don't have a strong scent at all, and I don't use any sort of sprays to cover their odor either. No one notices their smell unless they really get their nose in the fur, and even then it's not bad at all...because I keep their bedding clean and feed a very quality diet.
    Speaking of diet...vegetables are an utter NO-NO. These guys are obligate carnivores, meaning ONLY MEAT is their diet. Not peanut butter, or fruits, or veggies, or anything else. Only a high quality kibble that is nearly pure meat or a raw diet should be fed to ferrets.
    Finally...I do get what your intent is here, and it's commendable. But there's also a lot of incorrect info being presented here. They certainly aren't for everyone, and are definitely more demanding than a cat or dog...but they're not "wild animals" that might crush your fingers.

    • @benlucid3063
      @benlucid3063 10 років тому +4

      Trust me, they certainly can be vicious biters. I had a little girl I got at 6 months, and I don't think she was handled much before I got her, and she would often draw blood when biting. She took a long time to stop biting, probably a year.

    • @KyleVick
      @KyleVick 10 років тому +2

      Ben Lucid Oh certainly...if ANY animal is not treated well they can be quite dangerous, no matter the size. But my point is that no one gives these sort of cautions with dogs or cats, yet both of these domesticated pets are individually responsible for a much greater instance of true harmful biting per capita (for each species) than ferrets.
      A dog can quite literally kill you if they were abused, mistreated, etc., yet who ever mentions that before getting a dog?
      Again, I'm totally a proponent of discouraging someone from getting a ferret (or really ANY pet) by presenting the harshest realities of everyday ownership of such an animal--if they still want one then they will likely be a great owner. But inciting a near level of fear that is not really based in typical reality is unfair in my opinion.

    • @benlucid3063
      @benlucid3063 10 років тому +6

      Maybe so... I don't know, I like yourself can only go off my own experience, and I'd certainly stand by his statement that ferrets can indeed be biters, and given so I wouldn't recommend unsupervised play with small children.
      Forewarned is forearmed I guess. This video is one of the best examples of a broad introduction into owning a ferret, and I think most people would be much better for viewing it prior to deciding to adopt a fur ball :)

      This is true, they also love egg and scrabbled egg! It's funny trying to watch them figure out how to break it. I used to feed my (semi-working) ferrets raw meat too and they loved it. They rarely bit me with no training, though the jills tended to be a little bit more snappy. They do need a lot of attention especially if you only have one as they are very sociable. It's a personal choice in which one wants. If you have tattoos, piercings or even operation scars that's mutilation. So please don't rant on about "mutilation". As for it "causes" adrenal disease...totally unproven. Sure hope you aren't a PETA vegan supporter as you should not even own a pet according to their propaganda.
